Winston could never be replaced as he was so unique and gentle and accepting. However, I do hope they can fully integrate the right silverback for this wonderful troop!! Gentaro is wonderful and so is Kyomasa in Japan. I also follow those troops. Gentaro is almost 13 and Kyomasa is 12 I believe. Both great choices!!! Gentaro is a gentle giant as well. His family will miss him greatly however and so will Kyomasa's family. Praying for a good outcome. I regret never going to the San Diego Zoo and seeing Winston!! Rest in peace buddy.

I pray they move all the animals somewhere else better someday. Our Gorilla troop just lost their longtime Silverback as well. It's going to be an adjustment for them also. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to transport a gorilla overseas. It’s extremely traumatizing. Momotaro in Japan to this day still has trauma from his transport.
I agree that Winston could never be replaced and he was a legendary Silverback that won’t be forgotten…however, I feel like the zoo had to have seen this coming given his age and that they should have been a little more prepared for it. To not know who they are going to be bringing in to replace Winston is very surprising. They could have coordinated with another zoo and scouted out a potential Silverback far in advance of when Winston passed. I hope for the sake of the troop that the process doesn’t linger too long and that they find a suitable match.

PLEASE consider Shabani (27). He is a great father & troop leader. Shabani was given a mother (Nene/52) & daughter (Ai /24) as wives. Shabani & Nene produced Kiyomasa (11). Shabani & Ai produced Annie (10). Shabani & Kiyomasa play together almost daily. Kiyomasa is the only 1 giving Shabani affection. So it is difficult for Shabani to discipline Kiyomasa when he mates with the females. Meanwhile, the charismatic, energetic, famous Shabani gets absolutely no love from the females. PLEASE check out TH-cam video the story of Annie!
I can almost guarantee they didn't lay Winston some where in doors for the family to say goodbye. They have a rituals just like us humans, they have a mourning period where they gather around the deceased. It's really cruel to not let that happen.

Thank you for taking us to see Winston's family. I'm so glad Leslie has her big sister, Joanne, there for her to feel safe. This really is a beautiful zoo and they seem to genuinely care about the animals. I'm sure they will find the ideal silverback for the family. Dads are very important in a family.

This is so sad for this family of gorillas 😢, they can't go in search for another Silverback they have to depend on the zoo officials. BUT I used to go often to this animal park IT IS a wonderful zoo. I feel they will find another wonderful Silverback to fit in with this family ❤❤ there will be a suitable solution, I'm sure.

The Gorilla SSP handle all this not the zoo’s. The primatologist will have already know which Silverback would fit this gorilla’s. You have to gives a little time but introduction will happen at first in their private night area’s. GSSP - Gorilla Species Survival Program
Don't push the SSP to make a quick decision. They usually split up the entire family and move them to different zoos. There are five females. Leslie and JoAnne would not be daughters to the new silverback. They successfully integrated a male into the Brookfield troop recently, but that is a rare outcome.

San Diego Zoo...you need Step On It ...to bring in a new Silverback for the troop. This is agonal for the females especially Kamilia and Leslie 😮.
