AS a native Texan expat now living in Guatemala I love western wear...that belt of colored fabric is likely Guatemalan still made here for export in loads of great colors...made by indigena Guatemalans by the way...60% of locals in this country ARE indigena and another 20% ladino meaning mixed. That cognac brown is the perfect Western color esp in suede items: like your great vintage jacket, Forever 21 made a shortie version very inexpensive...also suede real or faux either with fringe or without are great.Worn over a button up shirt it looks very western. The number one way to make an outfit western is a great belt with large buckle in silver color and of course a pr of Western boots.
RE cultural appropriation: I am SO sick of seeing MY cultural heritage appropriated by designers too! I am a direct descendent of Robert the Bruce, Scottish founder of the royal House of Stuart...changed to Stewart in spelling by Mary Queen of Scots when she was in the French court as a girl because the French could not pronounce her name spelled as Stuart...thus she spelled it Stewart as did all future Stewart kings of England. The Bruce family had been for generations the Royal stewards (not JUST wine servers at court but they DID serve the King in that capacity), they were also knights, ambassadors to other royal courts etc. The modern Stewart plaid is used CONSTANTLY by designers and is now the most used plaid for everything from handbags to sheets and plates. Strictly speaking, only direct descendants of the that Royal House of Stewart (like ME) are supposed to be to use it. Period. I once attended a Christmas dinner in Miami at a house of ex-pat Cubans whose tablecloth, napkins, the patriarch's shirt, the matriarch's bustier (a bustier I kid you not), the youngest daughter's dress, the oldest daughter's skirt, every single Cubano in the family had on an item in my family's tartan! It was hilarious but I held my laughter til I left. I was wearing a Chinese pagoda patterned silk mandarin collared top myself ; ) . No one pays a bit of attention when it is Scots culture being appropriated . People who wank on about "cultural appropriation" never mean Scots or English , Welsh or Irish culture do they and I wonder HOW they don't see how illogical THAT is!
