  • here is a video about how i develop my skating technique to reach a good double push. Demonstration is not Always easy at 42y old on a 3X125 compare to when i was 25 on a 5x80mm frame but its style ok i would say.
    i still try every time i skate to get a better feeling to make the perfect double push on my skate.

      for me the most important is one to understand the fact you need to reduce the gliding moment and then the challenge is the timing between the 2 legs^^ … it take brain focus to solve this

    I have been an ice skater for well over half my life and been getting into inline skating recently. Now that I don't have a trainer anymore I need to figure out the double push all on my own and this is by far the most helpful video out there. Thanks a lot!

    Pascal, you recommended I watch this after I asked bill Stoppard to make a double push video and let me tell you that THIS.. is by far the BEST double push video in all of TH-cam. Watching those I feel my body doing it. 56y, skating since 6y, now since one year on 3/125 doing dblpush. I try to improve it every time I skate, not being a professional but 'skatophilic' as well.     I used to street skate back in the 90s. I took it back up a few months back and being it that i no longer have the courage to jump on and off rails like back then. Im getting in to recreational/speed skating. Just got some K2s and i cant get enough of the things. Getting my daughter in to it too and these are the videos i will be using to train her. Great video dude

      thanks andrea. Some exercice might come later... but as it's a lot aobut feeling and auto analyse i suggest you focus on a point and try to do it. For example, focus on taking outside edge, then try to draw the under push moment on the road.... when its master... focus on the timing of the body weight transfer....there are many way to get there but most important is that you writte your road ...and practise.....let's go skate

    There's an old expression "a stitch in time saves nine" - putting in the little extra effort to maintain speed is much more efficient than slowing and accelerating. Obvious really. I like the figure of 8 visualisation for CoG. It seems like the definition of double push has changed over the years, as you explained, but I'm going with your definition from now on! Great vid for those who missed speed class when we were young (or didn't even skate)!

    Okay so take this video down and make more money! This is great. I should also mention a big thanks with your videos. Starting Long Track as a master age skater and now trying some inline racing too managing to have some success in my First half Marathon In Montreal last Friday. Coming from a Sports Science background, your technical rundown is really helpful.
    To another note I know you are running a clinic after the Marathon in September. I have not decided if I can afford to be there this year but hopefully next summer I can make it to europe for some races! It's Hard training for this sport without any other skaters,coach + Living in Calgary, but also a great challenge! Thanks again

    Cher Pascal, cela a l'air si facile lorsqu'on vous regarde patiner et vos explications sont tellement bonnes qu'on se dit, il ne reste plus qu'à y aller et le faire!!! Oh que non! Je comprends très bien vos explications mais pour un débutant, qui apprend à patiner sur le tard dans sa vie..., et qui a tendance à trop ouvrir le patin au contact du sol, c'est assez effrayant de passer de la théorie à la pratique et d'offrir son "outside edge" lorsqu'on y est pas habitué. J'ai l'impression qu'il y a plusieurs mouvements préalables à assimiler avant de se lancer dans cette technique si optimale. Est-ce que c'est approprié pour un débutant de tenter de patiner ainsi et avez-vous des exercices pour apprivoiser le "double push"? Encore une fois, un énorme merci pour votre excellent travail de communicateur.

      salut Sylvain, c'est pas facile pour un débutant de se lancer dans la double poussée directement, c est pour ca que j'avais commencé par des tutos classiques "land the skate" how to push" how to get good position"... mais c est pas impossible de se jeter dans ce challenge ... le facteur limitant est l'équilibre sur un patin et la maitrise des changements de carre ....donc c est ce qu'il faut travailler en priorité comme dans ma vidéo avec le patineur espagnol qui etait venu a toulouse une fois....il fuat vraiment travailler a block l 'équilibre sur un pied

    I'm 73 and learning DP after a lifetime on ice hockey skates. My ice hockey technique is good for sprinting but wastes too much energy for going any distance on inlines - energy/heart capacity I no longer have. These videos are enormously helpful. I can do DP now but my underpush is short and weak. How can I lengthen and strengthen it? How do I put my glutes/hips to work?. I hear what you say but I don't know what to think/focus on to make it happen. When I pull inside with my hip, my knee moves inside but not my foot. I think I need more sideways lean but I don't know how to get it and when I do by accident/chance my muscle memory wants to crossover to recover balance. Yes, I know, too many questions which I am trying to answer for myself in daily practice. Thanks in advance for any tips to speedup this learning process.

      Hi yes I see what you mean. Nice description. It can happen if yo don’t have enough trust on the pressure under your foot… may be not enough outside edge also. Normally a little more outside edge than outside mean with the body prevent the knee to go inside during the inner push.

    Thanks Pascal. Just a quick thought, moving your body up and down excessively with each push wastes energy. I appreciate some movement is necessary to get the power into the ground, but the most important factor to mimise wasteful upper body movement is to be flexed forward at 90' so the hips only move up and down. For those of us old crinklies that skate straighter it could be wasteful. Also its the Adductor muscles rather than Glutei that push the leg medially.

      Hi Jan ...thanks for the remarks….Moving up and down EXCESSIVELY is a waste of Energy….but if you do just enought in the right timing it will change your life for sure.and the moment the body weight go down its an amazing oportunity to generate a great pressure on the ground if you use the moment. upper body movement were not acceptable some years ago in the definition of technique but i think those time have change (may be im wrong) in the quads tehcnique doing this INFINITY shape movement is super effortless when its done in the right timing...and its Killing you if its done in the wrong timing. if you skate straighter i'm agree its gonna be a problem^^….
      about the muscle group...looking from outside i'm agree we could think its the job of the adductor… but in real life its actually not. This muscle is too weak to do this movement in this position. if we stand straight it could do a bit of the job but as we are in a kind of sit position... and the skate is "fix" tothe ground at this moment...i have no doubt that it the Gluteis (in an excentric kind of way) that do the job...and it work good also as the gluteis is probably the most powerfull muscle we have. Practicing this session of double push...the muscle pain is clearly in the gluteis when its done good^^...and i can confirm i had sore gluteis muscle the 2 days after i did the video^^….but thanks for the remarks i love when people bring idea. (i thought a lot about this a can tell you^^)

I suspect that for elite athletes such as yourself a marathon is almost a sprint, for skaters of lesser ability it is agonising endurance where energy conservation is a major factor. Technique tends to suffer by the end of the race.

    Hi Pascal, what a great technical video!
    I have two questions:
    1. u said the underpush is a combination of body weight transfer AND a push with the gluts/quads. would u say it's a matter of timing - u start with weight transfer (hips) and gradually shift to a push? or are both done on the same time and it's just a matter of how much percentages u put on each?
    2. I find the curving motion of the frame in the underpush from inside to parallel (or even outside) to be very tricky. On the same matter, how do you prevent yourself from falling over? on the outside push u just land the recovery skate. on the inside push, u mentioned u need to use the recovery leg to transfer the weight back. I'm really excited that you said there will be a future video about this subject!

      rronkin 1- yes it’s very much a matter of timing... all is good... I personally like to start this part of the movement with the muscular action to generate more pressure then I play/help with my body weight ... but sometimes in race info the other way around (when I’m not in shape)

      @@ThePascalbriand I have a little theory about this stage, I wonder what you think:
      Let's start with curves. When we fall into a curve (let's say to the left, like in tracks), we keep our shoulders to the right, and fall with our hips into the turn. We keep this posture during the whole turn until the exit. It's like an endless fall.
      When you look at beginner skaters, they turn with their shoulders into the turn, and this actually throws them out of the turn.
      Now back to straight line technique:
      I think this relates to your video about the shoulders. We land on the inside leg (left) with our shoulders to the right. Then, for the underpush, we fall left with our hips, but unlike in turns, in a straight line we turn our shoulders *to the left* and that's what throws us back to a straight line and prevents us from falling to a turn.
      It's like both hips and shoulders are falling to the left, but the shoulders fall slightly faster, and that's what throws us back and we can then fall to the right.
      Makes any sense, or totally wrong? :)

    Amazing video. It really helps me understand the rhythm. I have started learning skates as an adult at 38. It’s been two months. 1.5 months on cheap hockey skates and 2 weeks on the professional speed skates. I have difficulty keeping my feet straight. They are mostly on inside edge. Any tips to fix this ? I also use the push whenever their change in direction like from inside to out and outside to in before I recover on another leg.

    Hi Pascal and thank you so much for posting this video. I understand the dynamics of the double push but I cant get it to work. I can take a good outside edge but the underpush is more or less non-existent. Here's my question: When you land the skate you first press down and then comes the actual outward turn using the ankle. I cant make that distinct outward turn happen or just slightly. How much turning force do you actually apply using the ankle and and to some extent assist with body transfer?

      Jerry Andersson outworks turn you mean when my skate go to the underpush? Under my body way? If so you have to play a bit with your body weight to create pressure... make sure you have outside edge and generate pressure and tension inside the hip. It’s not easy to feel if you don’t generate a good pressure on the ground....
      it can’t happen if you feel not super balance on your skate. That is why I always force my skater to be extremely good in stability and agility then. It’s also possible that your setting don’t let you do it... or that your shoes don’t let you create enought pressure. Shoes is then super important .

      @@ThePascalbriand Yes sir, that's what I mean.Outward turn that actually makes that circular turn when you can (as I understand it) apply the under-push. I took another technical 15 kilometers before you answered and as I see it, I don't have the guts to point the shoe properly inwards in order to create the actual and most needed, circular and thereby pushing movement, I'm afraid I will fall. Classic mind f**k if you excuse my language. The skate ends up almost straight in the direction of travel but still on the outside edge (halleluja). I also found, the timing, in order to create constant propulsion absolutely suck. I tried to take shorter strides and glide less on outside edge, keep a more straight line and turn back quicker for the outside push with help of the recovery leg, actually helped a bit, but need more leg power in order to sustain constant speed. As for the shoes, I'm on Powerslide Samurai boots with Powerslides´ XXX frame and MATTER G13 CHR 125MM F1 86A wheels. The equipment shouldn't be a problem, it's more like my useless self.
      Again Mr Briand, I'm deeply grateful you took the time to reply. I'll watch friday's Q&A with great anticipation but keep my mouth shut :0)

    Pascal, time ago kalon give a clinic where he analized double push of different skaters, he explained that it was really important the moment when the landing skate touch the floor, that it should be done when the pushing leg was almost finishing (he talked about the time the pushing leg should be as long as posible). But i see that you land your skate near the pushing leg. What opinions do you have about this?

      EmiVlogs everything is good information.some skater will like more my way some other kalon way. We both say the same when he say you have to push far...
      We can push far.... as long as we have pressure (or trip) ... we all agree on this. I mainly say to do short push as peopl’e have problem to manage to generate pressure when leg is far...
      About the landind... it’s about timing it s about how much you can grab inside push...

In my case I land the skate when leg that push outside is around the middle of the push (some times I hurry up a litle, something to work on), but when I retard the landing until the outside leg is almost finishing I feel very good pressure on that push, so maybe I have to change my timming.       i think yes...not really all at same time but then you can adapt the variation to the situation in the race… depend if you want to save Energy (bodyweight transfer) or if you want to breakaway tempo (quads) or a strong attack moment or a fast 1000m (gluts)

      Hej, great quite good. Main point to work is the control of the edge. You are a little block in the inside edge (not too much anyway) after landing it would be good to get a tiny bit outside edge to get more roll. Best is to work at slow speed one leg slalom .

    So, for the glute version you land your foot under the hip; for the quad version you land it a bit further inside. How about the weight transfer version? Where should you land your foot?

    Thank you, a really great video! Question, during the inside push how much knee bend do you 'reserve' for your outside push? You don't bend your knee again between the inside and outside push? And how much energy do you use for the inside push compared with the outside push, 60% - 40% or? Does it differ during a race?

      very technical question ^^ thanks. if i do a glut Inside push the knee bend is not that important for the inside push...and as i maintain my speed i also Don't need to low down again before the outside push;...if i skate a marathon speed ...if i wanted to accelerate and sprint then i will bring all more and more down of course. if its a quadricep Inside push then i have to bend a bit more to use some leg extension during the Inside push….all depend how i want to maintain my speed… if during the all circle of movement i feel i loose speed then i have to recreate more so i flex more...if the speed naturally stay flat then i Don't have to force more but just keep the good quality movement. the ratio of Energy between in and out push only depend of how much speed i want to re-create ...as soon as i feel i'm loose speed i will push more : it can be Inside or outside depend of the moment i notice the problem. During the race i play with all this to be able to activate the muscle group at different moment to make some recovery or work...also depend of my day fitness...some days my quads are dead so i glut double push….some day my gluts are tired so i use more my quads...if both are dead^^ i survive with lot of body weight transfer

    Thank you! This creates a great understanding. Nice to see confirmed what I sort of experienced but until now not clearly understood... the three different ways to drive the double push.
    But if you look at this video of Joey Mantia th-cam.com/video/yyfVqM4rMXo/w-d-xo.html, he seems to move the knee of his recovery leg far more behind his inner push leg. I feel that this helps me a lot to generate more pressure on the inner push, at least in the second part of it but I have a hard time to understand the mechanics behind this...

      in ski you can se eit a bit. I seaw some of the best ski player doing it a bit in a way of using very good the body weight transfert... which is similar to a part of the double push... but technically speaking with long ski its hard or almost impossible to get the inside push from the gluts i would imagine. I had few comments about ski specialist talking about it too

      Merci pour avoir pris le temps de me répondre Christian. C’est vraiment génial ce que tu fais. Pour l’instant ici il n’y a pas de neige alors je fais du ski à roulettes. Les skis à roulettes sont un peu plus long qu’un patin aligné, les roues sont un peu plus large et la décélération est très rapide après avoir fait la pousser de jambe sur le carre extérieur . C’est tellement un beau travail de jambe ce que tu fais que je vais l’essayer en ski à roulettes et voir ce qui se passe. L’idée de commencer la pousser sur le car extérieur avant de poussé sur le care intérieur du même ski tout en poussant très fort vers le bas et de coter me semble très intriguant. De pouvoir garder une vitesse constante et égale come tu dis c’est beaucoup moins fatiguant! Bonne journée!

      @@thibod07 en ski à roulette c est sur que Ca marche un peu aussi....c’est pas facile à coordonner avec le retour de l’autre jambe.... mais si tu regardes bien le mouvement de Bart swings sur une des analyses Ca peut aider.

    This is a great breakdown of the different types of double push, Pascal! One question: I would say that Joe Mantia's double push (as explained in his popular tutorial: th-cam.com/video/55YXOkf6n8Q/w-d-xo.html) is a "body weight transfer double push". Is that correct?

      Yes he do a lot of body weight movement there … but he can do a bit of all and he play with the 3 styles also.

    If I ware high cut shoes like R6 marathon,can I double push well? If I want more speed that should I change my shoes to R2 low cut? If I want long distance like 70km 100km which shoes is the best for me?

      Hi, Yes its still possible to double push a bit with R6... it will be harder to take lot of edge side to side because plastic reiinforced shell are less supportive than carbon shell but still possible. Maybe icon shoes or samourai shoes can work better than R4 R2. Even if long distance. Just depend how much comfort you need. Best would be the XXX195 i think.
