Man, I've spent the last couple years learning Computer 101 for the sole purpose of being able to collaborate in Song Writing and Recording... To say the least; the Task has been daunting. I spent my first Thousand hours just trying everything out to see what Reaper actually does... The last few months Kenny has helped me out with the rest. I've still a long way to go but am getting there 😅 Thanks Brother Kenny from the Bottom of my heart ❤️ for the tutorials. 💯🙏
I found it really interesting, but also think that in practice I would probably just use a multiband compressor on a bus, since I don't think I would want to split my guitars for other effects. Of course if I *was* applying a different effect, this process would nail it beautifully.
Works really well again for my stuff...and helps me throw out unnecessary e-guitar tracks, as the sound is now clearer but wider with just a left and right. This splitting series is really improving the mix. Thanks again Kenny!
I used this technique combined with a technique from another one of Kenny's videos to use the LUFS envelope of the lead vocal to control the volume envelope of the mid-range guitar split. Helps the guitar dip out of the way of the vocal without being an obvious gain reduction. Thanks Kenny!
Learn something??? For a newbie like me, secret doors were unlocked with this video!!! Thanks so much for all the tutorials you do on this channel, awesome stuff!!!
Wonderfully useful session as always. Really appreciate your channel, it really helps me get to grips with Reaper. Even better now with your Outro sequence graphics and music. Come for the instruction; stay for the Danse Macabre at the end!
Kenny, this is very interesting... What I struggle with is to find use of splitting, because: 1. If you deal with heavily distorted guitars, there is no need for compression. 2. An amp sim plugin already has low/mid/hi knobs (the mixer sliders in your video) 3. You can EQ the guitar. ... So why go through the trouble of splitting the signal? Perhaps the only justification would be to apply different FX for each band...
Thanks for all your videos! Btw, you can always hold Option / Alt at the same time after pressing Shift so it deactivates the main send & generate the send at the same time. :)
I’d seen Kenny talk of splitting before and it is only now that the penny has dropped - I’ve just used it for a forthcoming production, guitar solo and will be using this often for now on. Cheers, Kenny 👏
It is exactly that, a mulitband compressor followed by an EQ. Each band in ReaXComp has those same controls. But key differences - 1) In Kenny's example each band becomes its own separate track, therein lies the advantage. You get easily accessible gain controls and simultaneous metering for each band, Whereas in ReaXComp you'd have to go into the VST to make gain adjustments for each band, which is certainly doable, just a little harder to do maybe. 2) In Kenny's method you can further process each band by adding other effects per band? Can't do that in ReaXComp. I can't think of an example where I'd want to do that, maybe just apply distortion on the mids? Or individual sends to a reverb bus?
I'd like to hear this again but without the compression engaged, guessing there'd be little discernible difference as most of the tone shaping is coming from EQ? Still trying to wrap my ears around multiband comp. I'm not sure if I need a master class in compression or a remedial one.
I like the way you show doing the duplicating using busses instead of duplicating the audio on the tracks! As you said, much better if you need to do any edits or punch ins later.
Kenny I really need help. Can you help me? th-cam.com/video/LmMO4KhsxLI/w-d-xo.html here 08:55 he creates a blank midi item by clicking ctrl and drawing. then he records the guitar, and his guitar recording goes into the midi file. When I do this, after I record, 1 second later, my guitar loop goes offline. And also when he records he records below the midi item box in the same track. Then something carries it above into the item box. But when I do it, it looks like I'm overwriting. Loop starts to play and then a second later OFFLINE again. Can you help me? I only have this problem with nabla looper script. I am doing something wrong but don't understand what. midi works fine. actually, I have a problem with midi too but I solved it this way: I record the midi. loop starts. then I press space to save things I recorded. after I save it, my tracks go empty. then I press ctrl+z(undo) and my loops appear again. it may be the cause of my problem. undo works with midi files. but with live instruments, it doesn't work because items go offline 1 second later after the loop starts. and if I press ctrl+z, I don't get my recorded files as i get with midi files. I think this might be the cause of my problem. because when he records something, he doesn't use undo button. everything works fine. if I can solve it, probably my guitar recordings won't go offline too. Many thanks in advance. This could really help me a lot!!!!
Yes I think that's better, that way you only need to set the crossover points in one spot, and they can't get misaligned like with multiple splitter plugins
This splitting thing is really catching on and becoming a great way to control sounds. Idk, maybe it's been a common technique, but it feels new to me. Thanks, your vids always inform and inspire.
Kenny, when you do an A/B comparison, set it up with a quick explanation and then switch back and forth between the two settings or states without interruption. Please don't stop playback to say "and here's after". Doing so is distracting, disjointing, and should be considered a cardinal sin of these kinds of videos. The same unwritten rule applies to essentially any A/B comparison. It's not a stylistic thing or a matter of preference but a matter of human perception. Especially with audio samples but also with visuals when comparing, say, subtle differences in meters.
It could be useful to compare before and after, but this trick is not meant to make a "better" sounding mix , rather than a smart way to manage the mix
I have issue when guitar recording .. can you help me ? When i try record crunch i hear 2 sound of my guitar clean and crunch but clean sound more higher than crunch so weird and i use zoom handy recorder H4 as soundcard
Out of curiosity, why use the Auto Gain on the compressor? It makes the tracks even louder than when the compressor is bypassed. If anything, I would think that the auto makeup gain would try to keep the volume the same as if the compressor was bypassed.
This may be a dumb question, but how is this different than a multiband compressor? Seems like a single multiband compressor on the bus would do the same thing, but I may be missing something. Cool technique either way.
@@REAPERMania I've been watching 'Record Your Band with Reaper', since that's what the goal is. Ha. But, once I get in front of the computer, it's a little overwhelming. Do I just follow that series step-by-step? I don't recall it starting with file mgmt and setting up paths...? Also having trouble with setting levels. I can turn the preamp/mic gain on the interface completely down and it still reads more than the suggested -18 to -12db on the meters. Would that be a hardware issue? Using focusrite 18i20 and Scarlett OctoPre into MAC. thanks
Hey Kenny!!!! Im new still so this is probably a dumb question so please forgive me lol. Is there a reason to do this rather than just using EQ? Thanks!
Kenny, do you know that most non-linear digital processing cause Aliasing at higher frequencies???? You should mention it in some of your tutorials ..... ihihihihih
Hi Kenny, thank you so much for all your useful videos. I have a vst problem since a few days, Dexed and two others have always well worked until now. Even though I have tried to reinstall and use older versions, it still isn't in the vst plugins list, I had it in the AU list but Reaper displayed a message that it couldn't load the plugin but the settings hadn't been changed. Do you have an idea as why it stopped working and what I could do to fix the problem ? Thank you so much ! For the tech questions you might have, I am using MacOSX 10.1.6.
Excelente maestro. Sorry man, couldn't make it work. Sound kept coming off the original guitar and I couldn't get the highs to work after spending an hour trying. I'm using a PC and the latest Reaper but no joy. I really wanted this to work. Frustration complete.

Damn. He’s actually teaching us how a multiband compressor functions.
Great job Kenny

This is brilliant. Thank you. It really makes the guitar sound multi tracked but with so much dynamics
Did...did you just teach us how to make our own 3(multi)band compressor?? Fan-TASTIC sir!!!
Another awesome content! Thanks Kenny :)
This is so cool I can imagine using automation to bring more boom to a chorus ect. Thanks Kenny

Thanks for this lecture, it works fantastic for bass and guitar and will be part of my workflow from now on.
This is great! Thanks man!
Fantastic Kenny thank you so much!
Another awesome post.
One thing though, I don't hear much, if any difference using the compressor.
What am I missing here please?
This and the one on acoustic splitting are brilliant man. Love it, thanks so much

Amazing tutorial . Thanks Kenny for interesting and useful things .
Oh man the sound of those guitars! How did you get that distortion apart from the FX processing described here?! Great tutorial!
I am also curious what pedals or fx were used. amazing tone!
Sounds a fuzz pedal at times and an overdrive at others
@@dreamfever667 Maybe something like a green big muff...it sounds huge!
Another good one. Thanks!
Really very interesting and useful, Kenny. Thanks.
Kenny you are the man!
Wee question
How does this differ from using a multiband compressor followed by an eq? 🍻🍻

What a great way to mix guitars. Thanks Kenny for all the great knowledge. Much appreciated sir. 👍
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing! 🤘
Thanks Kenny 👍🏼
Thanks Kenny.
super helpful! this guy rocks!!!
Could you do something similar (sound-wise) with a multiband compressor with hi/lo pass filters?
Sure
As always, amazing. Please give us a similar approach for the million dollar vocal sound!
thanks 1000 Kenny 😉🎼👍🏽
Hi Kenny, please enable automatic subtitles. Thank you..
Great!! Thanks!!!
Love it......great video, simple and efficient
Thanks 🙏
It is good to know and remember that 2 guitars panned, will stay panned on a bus. Will it work for any plug-in or plugin must be stereo?
Cool, thanks Kenny!!
Thank you.
Damn. That’s awesome. Sounds monolithic. Could hear Chris Cornell singing over that.
We wouldn't need to hold down CTRL (as often) for fine tuning if the sliders were scaled properly.

I agree, it would be better to say 'I'm now going to show you before and after' and then play the track and seamlessly switch between FX on and off

You don't have to. I just prefer to make it loud and bring it down.

Hey Kenny, can you teach us how to route for vocoding. I followed your past video but I think reaper has changed. Im trying the Ovox plugin.
