Cool video. Im into embedded design as a hobby and im working on a touch screen interface and plugs where i integrate a variac, 1kva isolation transformer, touch screen, power resistors and plugs which will have a digital indicator of what they are and what's safe and such. Its part of a workbench renovation and i have a bunch of parts, motors, embedded controllers. I want all the heavy stuff off my bench and there only be a touch screen with controls, clear state indication of the plugs, variac status, isolation transformer and short detection for the dut.
I was going to put the isolation in a wooden box along wirh the variac but separate them with wood or acrylic. This will be a permanent installation. I was going to use a canbus setup along with high end relays to put things in and out of the chain. The variac was going to be controlled by a nema23 via the touch screen interface wirh granular or linear control for the desired output voltages. The plugs will open with servos and such so nothing can be used unsafely. Plus i want it to look cool af haha i was going to print a mechanical panel which covers the plugs and barrels using a statemachine i code.

Verbal diarrhea aside, i was wondering how youd separate the embedded (redundant) controller. I plan to have everything running on custom firmware but as we know any sbc or controller i use run on low voltage. I was going to galvanically isolate the variac from the nema by using a custom coupling mechanism thats non conductive and any fail state fails safely. Im 45, a nerd and retired haha. Plus i dont want any smps noise on my bench. All my power supplies are linear for dc. I was thinking id build an emi shielded box for the power supply and controller for the setup. Kinda like when i build guitars haha. I reqlly do not want to use bulbs to indicate shorts.

You can get an isolated variac for $200-$300 (SC-10T)

I wish I had the time to translate the whole thing. It usually already takes me almost a whole day to prepare everything, shoot, and then edit the video.
