      I used to tutor for SAT's a long time ago. There are some unique questions on that test that I do not work on everyday. I had a student ask me some questions recently from her SAT book and I felt like you do/did with Precalc, I need some brushing up!!! I am glad you find my lessons helpful. I will be sure to tell my "live" students that you said they need to appreciate me more:D:D:D haha Thanks!

      ***** I agree that absolute value functions can pose a challenge. If f(x)=|2x-7| and you try to check for even or odd you will have f(-x)=|-2x-7| which will hopefully show that the function is not even. I have students who struggle with algebra think that absolute value function will simply change all the signs inside the function or make ALL the negatives positive. I really like sketching the absolute value functions when possible to check for even or odd....this should be especially easy for linear absolute value functions like this one.

      +ProfRobBob Do you have a video that shows how to solve a equation like this. f(x+c) f(x)=8x^3 +7x^2-5 I am having trouble figuring it out. The program they gave to help us with math doesn't make sense. It just goes from one thing to another without showing the individual steps. it just says this is the simplified version without explaining.

    Hi Mr. Tarrou, this isn't exactly related to the video but I'm trying to figure out what I should be searching to understand this certain math problem I'm working on. I'm taking my College Algebra class online and I've been referring to your videos to help me understand these certain principles, but I'm stuck again.
    This problem I've been having difficulties is this:
    "Decide which of the polynomial functions in the list might have the graph below. (More than one answer may be possible.)"
    This problem then gives me a graph of a function that I am supposed to determine if it is even or odd (I believe it's odd if the right side of the function is above the x-axis and then the left side is below, is that correct?), what the degree is (is this how many times it crosses the x-axis? And then, how would this "degree" help me with the function? Would this be the amount of variables, or sets, that are in the function?), and then how would I know if the leading coefficient is positive or negative? Then I am to determine whether each "multiplicity of zero is even or odd" (I don't understand how to find the multiplicity from a graph, and how to determine if it's even or odd. In the function, wouldn't this be the exponent and the value of the exponent being an even or odd number?) and then find the functions that match up to my answers.
    I came here and watched this video thinking it would explain the evens and odds part of my function; you didn't explain this problem, but it helped me understand other problems I've been having.
    Do you have a video that explains this? If not, could you explain this to me? If you can't, what are these types of problems called so I can try to search for a website that will show how to solve this?
    Thank you! :)

    Is it safe to say that “odd functions are symmetric to the line y=x”? Or is that not necessarily always the case.
    Thank you

    • @profrobbob
      @profrobbob  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Odd functions are symmetric to the origin, meaning you can rotate the graph 180 degree about the origin and see the same graph. Symmetric to the line y=x is a reflection about that line. While at times it may seem like this is a symmetry, it will not hold for most graphs.

    I have a question, on odd functions example #3. You have an odd exponent, and an exponent of 2. Wouldn't this function be neither? X^1 and inside the square root X^2? Just curious.....

    • @profrobbob
      @profrobbob  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you are only working with polynomials it is easy to fall into the idea that odd functions have odd exponents and even functions have even exponents... or something like that. That is why I made this lesson with more complicated examples. You must analyze the relationship between the input and output values, not the exponents.
