Thanks for your daily Waddle of the Penguins! Penguin does still publish this edition of the Earliest English Poems. In fact, I have it as a Kindle Edition.

One I will look out for I think. Such a fascinating period of history.

As to post apocalyptic Britain, are you familiar with Jack Whyte's nine book "Camulod Chronicles?" It places the Arthurian saga in a plausibly historical setting. Beginning in Roman ruled Britain several generations before Arthur's birth, we follow select group of people who 'read the writing on the wall' and establish an isolated community that hopes to survive the Empire's eventual collapse relatively unscathed. We witness the legions' withdrawal, the inevitable collapse of Roman rule and order, and so on through Arthur's birth, rise to power and fall. I find it quite well done. I re-read the series last year and enjoyed it even more than my initial read.

I read this sitting at the airport to help my girlfriend (now wife) drive from Chicago to AZ. The emphasis on interior rhyme and syllabic repetition was so strange!
It did serve as a good preparation for reading Gawain and the Green Knight and the Medieval English mystery cycles. I believe Penguin uses the Chester cycle and Oxford uses the York cycle. Then came Chaucer in my Old and Middle English reading.

I find it difficult to stay a perfect lady when a Kindle version of The Complete Old English Poems costs 63 bucks. What's wrong with you, people?!

The KINDLE version is 63? That's insane!
