Happy one-year anniversary, and happy (German) Mother's Day, Ashton! If you keep making your (great) videos, I will keep watching. It is fantastic to have a channel like yours that doesn't just feature German sweets- and bread-tasting, driving on the Autobahn, culture shocks, reverse culture shocks, German habits that you like or don't like, or the occasional shopping clip. I also love the fact that you, in contrast to most other expat channels, don't have clickbaity titles (e.g. "This is what Germans are really like"). To sum it all up: I am totally happy that I found you!
That is really nice, thank you so much for your support. TH-cam really has a video for almost everyone but we are happy we found a way to make ours different from the existing channels. Plus, we are happy to dive deeper in these subjects to learn more about where we are living... beyond the simple things.
I also love the non-clickbait titles. It´s so insulting and unsatisfying. TH-cam doesn´t need to be cheap, if you´re patient and offer good quality content.
Congratulations on reaching the one-year mark! My wife (a native German) and I moved to Germany from the US two years ago, and I have found that your videos accurately reflect many aspects of the differences between the two countries. They also delve deeply into many of the practical issues that arise when one is adjusting to life in Germany--issues that don't arise when one is here as a tourist. In this video, I found Jonathan's quick summary of reasons in favor of e-bikes helpful. As a fit but older owner of my first e-bike in the hills around Trier, I have found that it extends my mobility without compromising my fitness. It also replaces a lot of car or bus trips. It would be great to see a video using Jonathan's summary as the outline.
We plan to do some more cycling content soon. I am sure Jonathan would love to share what he's learned in the business, and possibly make a video taking people on tours of his favorite cycling places in the Black Forest.
I tend not to write comments because most everyone has already said what I was going to, but seeing this is your one year anniversary I wanted to let you know that out of all the vlogs on TH-cam, yours are my favorite. No joke. They are the perfect combination of entertaining, humorous, and educational. I always look forward to Sunday mornings because I know there's Black Forest Family vlog wating for me. Thanks for all you do and keep up the fantastic work.
Geht mir genau so!
Ah wow, thank you so much. We really have found such a wonderful and supportive community on this platform and are excited to see what the future holds.
yt brought you to my timeline bc I watched a few other expat channels. while they copy one another with the usual topics, you brought a good mixture and a high quality by research. good luck for the future and thank you for keeping it real. things made from the topics you really like and are interested in are always better than the rest. some youtubers make a lot of reaction videos, it*s quick money, but I think it*s kinda lame. so HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, if you know what we can do to bring you to 100 000, let us know.
Hi Ashton, hi Jonathan, hi Jack, happy first anniversery! All the best for the future. Again a big thumbs up for TH-cam Videos and especially the very well researched Informationen and facts. It's always a lot of fun to watch them. Especially my favorite parts, the bloopers. Have a really nice Sunday and for you Ashton, mothers Day! All the Best Ralf
Thanks for answering the question about Jack's privacy. As long as you're holding up to those limits, I can keep on enjoying your channel. I'm also somewhat relieved that your informational videos perform better than your travel videos. There are so many travel vlogs out there, but what the world actually needs is well researched and entertainingly conveyed information as a counter-weight to "fake news" and "alternative facts". Anyhow, I wish you all the best for the next year and all the aeons to come.
We like keeping the variety - I think we will probably continue to sprinkle in some travel videos here or there - but the majority of our content will continue be the research videos. ❤️
Congratulations on your first year on TH-cam! When you talk about your learning experience and TH-cam being a learning by doing for you, I don't want to challenge that, but honestly, what drew me to your channel, when I first encountered it, it really was the palpable thoughtfulness, ambition and quality. When you talk about how your audience corrects you in the comments, as someone who has written two or three longer comments in the last few months, I would like to respond that I would hardly make that effort if I didn't take great pleasure in seeing how much effort you make to paint a really accurate picture of how things are in Germany. In this sense - and I mean this as the greatest possible compliment - you are the most "German" American family I have "met" on TH-cam and we Germans can consider ourselves lucky that you are here and are such great ambassadors!
Thank you so much, this really means a lot to us. We are often very humbled by the comments we receive and how our viewers take the time to reach out to us and provide feedback. We hope you have a great week!
Happy Mother's Day, Ashton. I'm so happy I found you guys on this platform. To hear your perspective on things, follow you on your adventures is always so interesting and delightfull. The travel vlogs might not perform so well but please keep doing them. So happy to have you here. Looking forward to the next year.
Thank you so much! We will certainly continue sprinkling in travel vlogs as we go, it's a good way for us to share more of our life (which we want to share) and increase our reach across TH-cam. We are so happy you enjoy them, they are a ton of fun for us to make.
Belgian here with no interest in moving to Germany or the US. Your videos are very instructive, well researched and straight to the point with great editing, natural presence on camera and one of your greatest qualities, no BS? Keep up the good work!
Needless to say I knew right away I was going to stick around this channel and commit to it like I do with few others! Neat wrapping up of your first year by the way! I would say Jonathan has it spot on when it comes to uprooting the whole family with the sole purpose of moving down here to Italy! 🌞🇮🇹 I would spoil you with food I'm telling ya 🍝 May fulfilment and joy come your way in the years to come. Un saluto dalla Campania, southwestern Italy 🌞🇮🇹
As Dutch person I started watching to get a better insight on US culture when it comes to non-car infrastructure. I stayed for the nice structured videos and am also learning more about Germany.
For me it was the other way around with the channel "Not just bikes" - okay I loved the Netherlands before watching those videos, but like you mentioned my insight got more detailed and love for the country growed.
@@codex4046 Ofc I can't answer that, but I was one of the very first viewers of the Black Forest Family and just a couple of months ago I got into NJB too. :) I've been a couple of times in Zeeland and love the more relaxed way in the Netherlands and the better solutions in many aspects of daily life. There is a lot us Germans can learn from our neighbours.^^
It now makes so much sense to me why a lot of youtubers publish so many high-quality content videos in late november and december. Thanks for the insight!
i just love that i can sit to have my breakfast and watch this one long video that’s super interesting instead of watching 150 tiktoks. I really really enjoy your content Edit: I think that it is amazing that you won’t do click bait, because it gives us, as viewers a sense of trust and reliance. Love form mexico 🇲🇽
Great answer about E-bikes. I used to bike only the regular bike, but since the e-bikes, we could see many more places and still have a great workout. And the best part is that my husband has been biking for over two years, and he loves it so we spend more time together and have so much fun.
Just over a year ago I found out I would be moving to the black forest and soon after that found your new channel. It was great to help us get ready for life in this little corner of the world. Since we moved here last October you guys have helped us understand things better and led us to some wonderful places to discover. This is truly an amazing place to live.
Happy one year! I've always appreciated your channel/videos because I don't think you ever come off as show-boaty. I can tell you guys are really passionate about sharing your experiences and really connecting them from growing up in the US to now raising a family in Germany. It's great how people get to see how people live in other countries (from an American perspective, we definitely need more of this). Plus, this channel is a great escape for me to think back to my time in Freiburg haha. Especially the bits in this video involving biking--biking is such a staple of the Freiburg life yet here in Kansas City, biking on roads can be really precarious so it's great when there are bike lanes or trails like the Trolley Trail by me where I live for that. Speaking of that, did Jonathan know there is an authentic German-themed Biergarten called Kansas City Bier Company off the Trolley trail in Waldo??
Love the video! Love your view! There is an energy in your “performance” (for lack of a better word) that is really nice! Btw: No idea how other people feel: when I post a comment, I never EXPECT an answer from the channel’s owner. I am happy whent there is one! But seeing what goes on on somewhat popular channels, I really have great respect for you even reading everything, not to mention taking time to answer! Concerning most US Expats’ way of talking about the corrections that come from German viewers, I feel that there is a possible cultural friction point - which interestingly all the US Expats I’ve watched on YT - including you - seem to have understood but have to keep explaining to their American viewers: What might come across as telling someone off for making a mistake in the US, coming from a German is (most of the time) simply meant as a help to get back on track. Sometimes, if it comes very factual, it might seem rude. It is hardly ever meant that way!
I second that - the love for your videos and the comment on the "corrections" of your German viewers (although I am sure to have read also such comments from US viewers). I myself know that a 20min video can't cover every detail and therefore check the comments for additional information and other insights. It's like a forum discussion for me. Most Germans are pretty straight forward so it might sound like a critique, but please don't take that personal! Your channel is the best expat channel I know so far! Keep up the good work ☺️
Germans (on average, not everyone of course) are certainly more direct and to the point than Americans. But we have lived here long enough to know that it's not meant to be rude and it's to keep people 'on track' as you have mentioned. We are happy to continue learning and improving from everyone on here.
About kids on internet, in Europe it's not only about cultural differences but the legal aspect. In Switzerland - and German is often quite similar - kids have a legal right to privacy and technically cannot consent to give it up since they are underage. It's often ignored and there is a form of tolerance, but it's still illegal. So it's not legally speaking a "family decision" only and here lies the cultural difference. The state may - like with homeschooling - put it's nose into your family's decisions. Since you have a legal team, you might wanna ask them about German laws. On the lighter side, happy anniversary, just discovered your channel and been binge watching it. Awesome and factual content. My go to place when I feel like complaining about Swiss taxes. Sets the record straight and reminds me why it's worth it a 1000 times
Thank you very much for your honesty in this very interesting anniversary video ! Also very nice to flatter your audience so much. Feels nice... And i know you read all the comments! You're in my top ten of channels answering my comments ! Your channels is successful because of your authenticity. I personally love all of your content. Nevertheless i'm also looking forward to the cycling topics! Please take care, stay safe and go on with your good work for a veeeeery long time please ! Oh yes, i almost forgot: Glückwunsch zum Muttertag Ashton !
I'm new to your channel; like, I happened upon one of your videos yesterday; not sure why the YT rabbit hole offered up your video, but I'm thankful it did. Your research videos are so good! You really do get a good balance of being informative and entertaining. I like how thoughtful both of you are, and how you both are so open; it's refreshing. Your house looks beautiful. I really appreciate the way you approach having Jack on this channel. I'm just now starting to hop around the videos from your first year. I can't get to them all, so if there are any that you are really proud of ands/or think your viewers should watch, let me know. I hope you keep growing.
Ah there are so many its difficult to pick ones to recommend! If you like comparison videos, the healthcare video is always a popular pick. But for more travel/adventure style vlogs, I know my husband Jonathan is really proud of his Everesting attempt that he made this summer.
Best wishes for your upcoming 2nd YT year. I can only underline that your well researched topics are outstanding in quality and presentation.. it may be way more work, but it shows and makes your channel so outstanding in comparison to other also entertaining and nice expats etc. see u in your next vid
Love the new animated intro banner with the landscape and you all on the bikes. Great job! Hope it's here for the long run. Happy Mother's Day to the entire Black Forest family :)
Some♥ for you guys and a supporting comment cheating the algorithm ;) The amount of research and production value that you put into this channel is simply mindblowing and staggering. You are already doing professional quality content in terms of production, information and entertainment. And you guys are such a relatable and entertaining couple that literally everyone I know would love to call you their friends. ♥ Huge kudos about keeping Jacks privacy and your stance on clickbait and influencing. Please never change that. Transparency and quality always prevails in the end. That is also a very German notion by the way.
Happy one year anniversary! Yes, your researched videos are the best and hopefully you will profit from them for years to come. There are so many videos with such little content spread out to 9 minutes whereas you guys pour a LOT of content into your "compare" videos. Keep up the good work please. :) Happy Mother's day!
I wasn't really aware of the fact, that I watched your videos from the beginning and subscribed shortly after that. Always thought you must do this much longer. It has become an institution in my sunday routine - thank you for the great time i had watching your content.
You say " we are no experts in german law and taxes..." I say: after having gone through the move from US to Germany and setting up a business in Germany, gave birth to a child and built a house over here, you probably know more about those topics than most germans!
@@TypeAshton That is how you know you are an expert. If you feel like scratching the surface you probably are an expert. If you feel like an expert you probably are an idiot! 😁

I don’t watch a lot of videos apart from when I cook and clean up afterwards. I listen more than I watch actually 😅 but your channel has quickly become one of my favourite ones as you are clearly not typical ‘influencers’. Your videos are speaking to me because I lived outside of Germany for 26 years and coming back here after such a long time felt a bit like starting over in a new country (which I‘ve done several times) and I’ve got an outsider viewpoint now like you. I think it’s an important experience to make and I liked how talked about the issue of apparently getting unpatriotic by being able to compare and suddenly seeing how things can work when done differently too. If that is unpatriotic, then patriotism is not good for any country. 😬 Oh BTW in your ancestry video you mentioned the Haferland family name and how you seem to have connections to Hanover: in my school here in Hanover there were two siblings with that last name. You could be related to them! 😅
Hey dear BFF! Congrats for one year being on TH-cam and seeing your channel grow. I never build a house, never moved to a foreign country and never had kids...no matter what, each Sunday I look forward for your new upload. And extra thanks for including my questions! Highly appreciated
I've been following you for a few days/weeks now and have "catched up" on a lot of videos... it's just a pleasure to see/hear you. The videos you make are of really great quality, as well as the well-founded research and your non-judgmental impression. According to “good German tradition”, you are NOT afraid to first keep quiet about things and later get upset with others about them. No... you just come across as genuine and that's so nice to experience. By the way, not all Germans are bourgeois / very conservative and have problems with a rather relaxed clothing/lifestyle... BUT the region in which you live is known to be VERY conservative in this regard 😂. When I see videos like these from other TH-camrs who come from America or still live there, but feel more comfortable here in Germany or would rather live here, then it makes me a little proud, even though "we Germans" really don't agree with everything are it here will decide. Please keep it up and thank you for your content.❤
And please do cycling content. 😄
Happy anniversary! 🥂 I think what makes you both a success, as well as your professionalism, is that you are both very genuine! All your success is well deserved.
Wow, congratulations! One year already? impressive! I feel "virtually attached" to your trip for several things. We moved with 2 small kids in June last year (almost a year by now), from Argentina to Stuttgart! Having similar "cultural shocks" as you show in your channel, struggling with taxes, kids education, trying to learn German and so on! Keep the excellent job, and all the best for your second year! Happy mother's day by the way!
Thank you so much (And happy Mother's day to all the moms in your life as well!) It's so cool that this channel has connected us with so many other families in situations like ours. Hope you all are doing well and have settled into life in Stuttgart. ♥️
@@TypeAshton thanks for your kind words! Yes, we are very happy with the moving. It was in fact far easier than we thought, mainly because the systems here and the people work very, very well!
It is always interesting and entertaining to watch your videos. Congratulations on your anniversary! I have recommended your channel to adults who learn German as a foreign language since I consider the content valuable.
Congratulations on your first YT anniversary.. I like the content, especially because I learn something about how Americans value Germany, my neighboring country. Looking forward to your upcoming content.
I think you are doing a great job. I like your knowledge based, research orientated content best. What you‘re doing helps mutual understanding and tolerance. The US is a great country and I don’t think you’re disrespecting that. You’re helping to make this world a better place. Criticism is a virtue. Keep up theropod work. Lars from Germany
You didn’t reveal your biggest secret for TH-cam success: you are very likable and have great chemistry (and honest and smart, but that’s besides the point). So I wish you to keep being awesomely you. I Came here when I was planning to move to Germany, then I decided to move someplace else but I’m still finding myself watching your great videos. It genuinely makes me happy to see you succeed. All the best. Can’t wait for the merch… :D
Hmm, my first two questions would have been 1) why did you start a channel in the first place, what is your motivation, 2) how much time do you actually devote to a single video (research, filming, editing...). Personally, I've started watching your videos for several reasons: content is comprehesive, informative, objective, you both seem very unpretensions (which is both positive and uncommon), and it offers a European perspective or insight, (I grew up in a European household in Chicago, so am a European at heart). I agree with your privacy limits, 100%. Personally, I don't care about travel videos unless it is the travel of someone personally connected to me (i.e. my daughters). Cheers.
Thank you very much to the beloved black forest family for your one year anniversary, 🥂🎉 for all the interesting videos and the fascinating content you created. I'm glad to know you guys and excited to see more. 🤠 And of course happy mother's Day to Ashton 🍀💐🥂🍹🎁 In Germany and a few other countries, beer counts as a staple rather than purely alcohol, so that shouldn't really be a problem. Your choice is of course also very good.
The Q and A video overview video worked well because of the time difference and with a livestream, most YTubers either do that while they’re traveling to show people around a particular place or they using it to discuss a current events topic and in both they’re answering questions while they’re doing the show. What you guys have works for you and with 20K subscribers at this point in time, you’re not yet anywhere near where the top influencers but you’ll surely get there! Like the old saying has it, Rome wasn’t built In a day and the same is true with your channel. Its going to be more noticed and hopefully you’ll get more subscribers who discover it. In closing, one important thing should be mentioned: what you have on YT that you wouldn’t have gotten if you were professionals backed by a major production company isn’t fans but something more valuable: you have a family in all of us who watch your content and you’re no longer to us just the Black Forest Family or content creators to us, you’re relatable people with an interesting story to follow to whom we’re close and we appreciate you and your hard work as much as you appreciate us! One last thing: love the new graphic logo to your channel and the material design is beautiful and well thought out and on that note, we look forward to more content from you Ashton and Jonathan, in the future. Stay blessed!
Wow thank you so, so much. It sounds cheesy to say, but we really have found a "community" here that is unlike anything else we have ever experienced. It really motivates us to keep making content. It really is something special to get to do something that you are passionate about that also brings joy to others. We are especially thankful for a great following and appreciate all of your support over the past year.
Congratulations! You guys are doing so fabulously well with your channel. I enjoyed every single episode from Triberg on. Having been a US resident for some time, I was, and still am, interested in your perspective on German life in one of Germany's most beautiful, as well as most progressive, corners. And having been a Freiburg resident for 22 years myself, watching you explore that special place has provided many trips down memory lane. I was especially captivated by Ashton's video on her family's medical history. I felt this was not an easy one to open up about, and from personal experience, I could empathize with many of your personal thoughts, feelings and decisions. (You had me in tears there! And I am sure I was not alone in that.) I for one am looking forward to what's going to come.
Wow that is AMAZING that you have been following us from the beginning. Thank you so much for your kind words and all of your support following along on our adventures.
I’m a Canadian and I have lived all my life here, but I love learning about other countries, geography, etc and that is what drew me to your channel. Everything you talk about seems to be very well researched and well thought out. PS: my heritage is Icelandic so I love the fact that Iceland would be among your top choices eg. Other countries to live in!
Awe wow thank you so much!!! And YES, Iceland is one of the most stunning landscapes with a wonderful culture and happy people. We can't wait to go back and visit soon.
Congratulations to your first year on TH-cam! I love your researchery videos since I learn a lot from (by?) them. Due to my academic background I know that doing researchs and making an article, book or video out of it needs much efforts, but the results are very interesting and give new insights and ideas. And such type of videos like yours are rare on YT. I love them.
Thanks so much! We've learned many channels go for the 'easy' topics and discussions to get more videos done faster. We decided from the beginning that quality and content will always be our top priority. We are capable of doing the research and believe they will perform better in the long term. Thanks for your support!
Thanks for one year of your sight to Germany. I learned a lot about my home country. I look forward to many more videos from you. Best wishes from Crailsheim 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I actually don't know how I ended up on your channel. But I was hooked and now watch every video. I really like how much information and research you put into your videos. So they are not just opinion pieces but actual facts. Thank you for the videos. Onto much more great years.
About reading the comments; 51:24, I was quite surprised when you two recently reacted to some comments I made on some of your old videos. I did not expect any reaction from you at all. Thank you! It makes you even more lovable :-)
Thanks a lot for all your efforts and congrats to this first birthday of your channel. I‘ve enjoyed your vids a lot. I also want to support your way of how to involve your kid but also keeping it’s privacy. It is a good compromise! Go ahead like that and enjoy the Black Forest! Just a personal interest: e-car, PV on your house, have there been changes in building your house due to the current material crisis? E.g. heating system etc.? So, I am looking forward to your update on building a „German“ house 😉 danke 🙏
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum TH-cam Jahrestag!! I watched several of your videos and enjoyed them but what really really caught me and made me click that subscribe button were those (not so well-paid) January and after videos that were so fact based and well researched. I learn a lot by watching them, not just about your single experience but the actual broader numbers around the topic. Please keep the good work up, all the best and and many thanks for the great content.
Happy one-year anniversary! I rarely comment, but I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that I am always delighted with the production quality of your videos!
Hi guys. As I said on a previous post, I thought you guys were doing great and believe the same to-day (or I wouldn’t still be here). Best wishes for continued success.
Congrats on one year - and Happy Mother's Day! I can understand that saying something negative about your own country or even worse, about your guest country, will raise eyebrows, and probably in some ways, it should, as long as discussion is possible, I guess, it is all good. It's probably just human nature that way. One thing though always strikes me as courious in the US, especially among those of the most patriotic kind. They typically will not allow anything negative to be discussed or even thought about the US, but somehow find it totally ok to diss the public school system and raise their kids with a belief that what the government provides is so bad, that kids need to be protected from it via homeschooling. Somehow, that is not unpatriotic thinking - just any other critiques about the US are. Is that not a tad illogical? Privacy is a big topic in Germany, and probably all countries who have experienced dictatorships. I appreciate that you are so thoughtful about Jack and what you are willing to show or not. Sounds like you have thought that through for yourself. I think, the only advice I would have from raising kids through to adulthood, is that you may want to make an artificial cut-off, like school-age or whatever seems right, where you don't show his face anymore, just silhouette or such, because kids change in spurts, not gradually. And so you cannot predict when they suddenly feel different than they felt before, and then they ask you to remove content going back in time. Not ideal. Better to cut everything off before it is too late. Jack is going to grow up a German kid, if he stays here in Germany. He will develop a more German attitudes about things. Finally, congrats to all the work you have done to learning about TH-cam and editing and such. All your work really shows. I think it is a privilege to join you and a few other families for a little while on a Sunday, while I am thinking about my own experiences jetting back and forth between our countries, just the other way around. Entertainment comes in many forms, infotainment, sharing experiences, a good laugh like 'Arbeitsunfaehigungsbescheinigung'. Great pronunciation btw. wow! It's all good, and the stunning visuals are helping a lot. Looking forward to some bike travel videos from around Germany. Sounds like a brilliant idea.
Thanks so much for the nice comment. The patriotism thing is really an interesting topic by itself. We will try and think of a way to approach this for an un-biased video. I know many Germans are intrigued by this type of mentality of many Americans. We agree completely on the cut off once Jack reaches a certain age. It will be better for him and us in the long run. Thanks so much for watching and supporting our little channel!
Alles Gute zum Muttertag, Ashton💐. I have to smile again while you are both trying to say the word "Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung"😄. But finally you did a good job pronouncing it! Mabey you visit the northern part of Rheinland-Pfalz in the future. Grüße aus dem Westerwald
Congrats to your first year on YT! Thanks for this great video! I feel like I have seen the blooper on "Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung" before. Anyway, there is a reason why even us Germans, we don't use the full term in every day speech but abbreviate it to "AU" :)
Happy 1st anniversary to you! Been watching your video for around 4-5 months (TH-cam recommended me your house tour at that time) and I would say your videos are my type of information I want to watch in TH-cam I love how the informations are presented and being direct to the problem makes it easier to focus to the information Thank you for making videos, wishing all of you a great year ahead
Thanks for one year of great videos, so well researched and supported with sources that most scientific research papers pale in comparison. Your open minds, frankness, curiosity, honesty, etc all make you even more endearing than your already friendly personalities. Love you guys, and have recommended you to many other expats/immigrants (nothing bad about the second term) as a good source of info as well. To several more years worth of many more discoveries of the most pleasant kind.
@blackforestfamily I just found your channel and really enjoy it. Have considered becoming an expat someplace in europe. I love your more "reseachy" video. Have not watched and of your travel ones. Your healthcare persoanl journy one was emotional. I am now watching your dream job video. Cool that you get to work on TDF and protour bikes. Cant wait to watch more. @Ashton, love your energy on camera, and jonhathan does good also. Gooduck with the channel.
Happy one-year anniversary. I have learned so much from watching your videos and I really appreciate how much work you put into making each video. I am moving from Canada to Germany next month and your videos have definitely helped me get an idea of what I'm getting into 😁 Thank you! ❤️
I love how thorough you are in all your videos and would love it if you did some sort of collaboration with Not Just Bikes comparing transportation & housing between the US, Germany, Netherlands, etc.
Happy Mother's Day, Ashton and Happy Anniversary. Loved the fun story (and the honesty) about your first/second TH-cam-Video. Best wishes for the future of your Channel!
I really enjoyed this Q&A, even though I'm in camp researchy videos normally. I think your approach concerning Jack's privacy is a good middle ground. One also has to take into account that you have family abroad. I'm no fan of sharing content of my son on social media, I haven't even mentioned his birth on fb etc. But with family abroad it was clear from the start, that finding some way of sharing pics and videos of him will be necessary. So yes, I came from a point of being very much pro privacy and as a mum have adjusted some of it. And Jack being part of your adventures without being staged or the center of interest feels like a very good compromise. And some topics like the video about Kita wouldn't even exist without him.
Thanks for watching. You're certainly right about Jack on social media. It's almost impossible for us to keep him off of Facebook, simply because our friends and family in the states are dying to see him grow up. Thankfully we have the opportunity here to restrict views to certain groups of people.
I know the story. I am running a GbR in Germany, having a Steuerberater and a US CPA to take care of taxes in both countries. Such a waste of money, but it is so sad that we have to deal with overburdening government that does not care about the citizens struggle to have to deal with the expenses of bureaucracy.
Thanks for sharing all of this with us! In my opinion you found a really nice middle-way between entertainment and education. I can clearly tell that you have experience doing research, thats one of the reasons I enjoy watching your videos so much. Also a good approach with your child, keeping his life at least semi private, I didn't know you thought about this so much but kind of expected it given what I’ve seen from you so far :D Your videos are great as they are, so no need for improvement on editing or research needed in my opinion, but of course you can always do more, but be careful it doesn’t get too much. I wish you a lot of success for the future! PS: One possible improvement I learned from a podcast I like to listen to: You could talk about the mistakes in the previous video in your next video (additionally to making an annotation in the video itself) so that your regular viewers get everything correctly.
Yes, we should get better about editing descriptions of our videos for mistakes we have made. We wish we could update the published video on TH-cam, but unfortunately it's not possible. As for speaking about the previous video's mistakes, we have talked about that as well... but it might be a bit confusing for some of our viewers who haven't watched it yet.
Thanks for your today's video. I enjoy watching your channel very much. As a foreigner in Germany as well I appreciate very much hearing your unbiased prospective on the life here. Your videos are very informative, actually can help others in settling their lives here. You do a very good research before talking about facts. The best way of all expats here I would say. Keep doing like this in future, I am looking forward to it! All the best to your little cute family!
You enjoy yourselves evidently, i and many viewers enjoy. And i congratulate you for your success. Your readiness to speak about your financial motivation is very American. Americans don't like to discuss. religion and politics, Germans are shy about money. I find your openness refreshing, honest.
It is so interesting how cultures interpret the faux pas around different discussions. You're totally right. Americans can talk money (unless it's about your salary, then they never talk about it)... and Germans are more open to religion and politics.
I don’t‘t consider it a faux pas, just a noteworthy difference. If it is also financial success motivating you to produce this entertaining content, more than fine with me. Even better if it helps to live a worryfree life with your charming family.
I like watching you guys, but this video I "watched" while making dinner in the kitchen and just listening to it. You guys have just so pleasant voices and a very entertaining way of talking and explaining :)
Hey guys, this is great timing! I‘ve got a long car trip later and will listen intently lol! I’m still waiting to hear if I‘ve been accepted 😅 and you guys have been one of my inspiration channels all along, so I think it’s fantastic that you‘ve uploaded this video. It’s the brilliance of TH-cam that we can be so creative, but sometimes I wonder if there are things I should know, or whether just to keep doing my own thing and your authenticity always reassures me.
We are SO glad that TH-cam connected us. We love collaborating with other content creators so if there is anything we can do together in the future let us know! I know that for us as a 'content creator' on TH-cam it was difficult at first to find our stride in the first few months. We still don't have the secret sauce by any stretch of imagination, but one of the things I think is really neat is to see Germany through all of the other channels' eyes. I think your perspective in the arts is totally unique and you offer something unmatched. ♥️
Both of your channels (Lauren and BFF) give me the vibe of you trying to do something for me as a viewer, not you trying to make money. And I get the feeling you are trying to deliver good quality as well. And most of your viewers recognize and appreciate that a lot. Those qualities usually are hard to find, just like "die Stecknadel im Heuhaufen".
@@wora1111 thank you so much! Yes, I am always thinking of what I believe the people watching my videos would like to know, or see, or what would be something they would like to see. I try to imagine being the viewer and where they would turn their heads! I would love my channel to lead to a source of income, but my primary concern is to put a beautiful experience out there for people to enjoy ❤️
@@TypeAshton you are just the sweetest! 🤗🥰😘 I love getting your perspective on everything, it really makes me think. And I love how welcoming you are to me 🤗 You always make me feel part of the gang lol!
I think the right thing for you to do with Jack is whatever you think is best for him. He is your child, you should be able to make your own decisions on jacks appearance on your TH-cam channel. People shouldn't be trying to tell you what to do with him. I think your TH-cam videos are just fine without the appearance of Jack that much. Thank you for taking Jack's privacy into consideration.
Happy mothersday Ashton!! Really been looking forward to this video. Your channel is so informative and unbiased/balanced to different viewpoints. Keep up the great work, Kind regards Alan
Thank you so, so much. We are so thankful to have found such a great community on TH-cam and really love that you love our videos. Have a great Sunday!
I grew up in LA in the 60s, and I rode my bicycle to Elementary, Jr. High and High School. My High School was 2 miles/3.2 km away. I rode everywhere on my bicycle, until I turned 16 and got a car. This was a very typical experience with everyone I knew. At that time there were no bicycle lanes, you just rode in traffic and took care to deal with traffic. The schools all had areas to chain up all the bicycles.
That was my experience as well in elementary school. However I rode on the sidewalks most of the time, the streets were too dangerous for a younger child.
Congrats to your TH-cam Birthday. You have come a long way and can be very proud of what you have achieved.Looking forward to your House-update video :)

This makes us so happy to hear! We are very happy you enjoy them and we can be a part of your Sunday routine. Thank you for the support!
Thank you so much!
Hi Ralf! Thank you so so much for all of your kind words and following along with our channel. We appreciate you and hope you have a great Sunday.
I like your honesty.
This makes the channel so much more authentic.
Please preserve that.
I absolutely love the transparency and authenticity in every one of your videos, you guys set the bar high for good content
That's great to hear, thank you for your support!
Needless to say I knew right away I was going to stick around this channel and commit to it like I do with few others!
Neat wrapping up of your first year by the way!
I would say Jonathan has it spot on when it comes to uprooting the whole family with the sole purpose of moving down here to Italy! 🌞🇮🇹
I would spoil you with food I'm telling ya 🍝
May fulfilment and joy come your way in the years to come.
Un saluto dalla Campania, southwestern Italy 🌞🇮🇹
As Dutch person I started watching to get a better insight on US culture when it comes to non-car infrastructure. I stayed for the nice structured videos and am also learning more about Germany.
So glad you found us! ❤️
For me it was the other way around with the channel "Not just bikes" - okay I loved the Netherlands before watching those videos, but like you mentioned my insight got more detailed and love for the country growed.
@@Balleehuuu I started watching Black Forest Family after NJB. I wonder how many viewers are shared between the two.
I really really enjoy your content
Edit: I think that it is amazing that you won’t do click bait, because it gives us, as viewers a sense of trust and reliance.
We are SO glad we could help you in your move and hope that you have settled in well. ❤️ Thank you for following along on our adventures on TH-cam!
Wishing everyone Blessings on the TH-cam journey! Thanks for all you do Ashton and Jonathan!
Thank you so much for your feedback, it's great for us to hear. Also, thanks again for your support!
Thank you so much. We are SO glad that others enjoy our videos. ❤️
Happy 1 year anniversary. Looking forward to seeing you channel grow! 🤗
Love the new animated intro banner with the landscape and you all on the bikes. Great job! Hope it's here for the long run. Happy Mother's Day to the entire Black Forest family :)
Thank you so much! And a Happy Mothers Day to all of the moms in your life as well. ❤️
We are so much fun watching this week! We've been looking forward to it all week! Happy Mother's Day, Ashton!
Thanks so much for watching and supporting!
Some♥ for you guys and a supporting comment cheating the algorithm ;)
The amount of research and production value that you put into this channel is simply mindblowing and staggering. You are already doing professional quality content in terms of production, information and entertainment. And you guys are such a relatable and entertaining couple that literally everyone I know would love to call you their friends. ♥
Huge kudos about keeping Jacks privacy and your stance on clickbait and influencing. Please never change that. Transparency and quality always prevails in the end. That is also a very German notion by the way.
Vielen Dank!
Thank you so much!
I wasn't really aware of the fact, that I watched your videos from the beginning and subscribed shortly after that. Always thought you must do this much longer. It has become an institution in my sunday routine - thank you for the great time i had watching your content.
We are so happy to hear that we are a part of your Sunday routine. That means so much to us. We are glad you enjoy them!
You say " we are no experts in german law and taxes..." I say: after having gone through the move from US to Germany and setting up a business in Germany, gave birth to a child and built a house over here, you probably know more about those topics than most germans!
I agree. I believe Ashton and Jonathan do a great job sharing your experiences in all those areas, benefitting all of their viewers.
Thank you for the nice complement. We feel like we are just scratching the surface of these difficult and complicated topics.
Oh BTW in your ancestry video you mentioned the Haferland family name and how you seem to have connections to Hanover: in my school here in Hanover there were two siblings with that last name.
Thank you so much for watching!
.....
Thank you so very much. ❤️❤️
Congratulations on your first (and very successful) year on TH-cam. To many more to come. 🥳
I wish you all the best for living here in Germany!
It is always interesting and entertaining to watch your videos. Congratulations on your anniversary! I have recommended your channel to adults who learn German as a foreign language since I consider the content valuable.
Thanks so much for watching and sharing our videos! We appreciate it.
Very nice of you to say, thank you!
Cheers.
Thank you very much to the beloved black forest family for your one year anniversary, 🥂🎉
for all the interesting videos and the fascinating content you created.
I'm glad to know you guys and excited to see more. 🤠
And of course happy mother's Day to Ashton 🍀💐🥂🍹🎁
In Germany and a few other countries, beer counts as a staple rather than purely alcohol, so that shouldn't really be a problem.
Your choice is of course also very good.
Thank you so much!
Your priorities are refreshingly human. Cheers!
I love your authenticity and honesty!
Wonderful and fun video to watch! You’re such sympathetic family! I’m alway thrilled by the amount of content you bring across!
Thank you so much!
Jonathan's expression after tasting the alcohol-free beer is priceless: 32:07
😂😂
Thank you for the great quality content. Love all the research you do for these videos. Keep it up!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for one year of your sight to Germany. I learned a lot about my home country. I look forward to many more videos from you. Best wishes from Crailsheim 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much!
I actually don't know how I ended up on your channel. But I was hooked and now watch every video. I really like how much information and research you put into your videos. So they are not just opinion pieces but actual facts. Thank you for the videos. Onto much more great years.
Thank you so much for your support!
Thank you so much for your support! We will keep them coming.
Happy one-year anniversary!
I rarely comment, but I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that I am always delighted with the production quality of your videos!
Thank you so, so much.
Just a quick "Thank you" for the entertaining and informative videos, keep up the great work.
Thank you so much. ❤️
Vielen Dank! Wir wünschen dir auch einen schönen Sonntag.
Hi guys. As I said on a previous post, I thought you guys were doing great and believe the same to-day (or I wouldn’t still be here). Best wishes for continued success.
Thank you!
Anyway, there is a reason why even us Germans, we don't use the full term in every day speech but abbreviate it to "AU" :)
thank YOU for watching and supporting us. We appreciate it.
You two are doing wonderful things, and will continue to do so!
Thank you!
Congrats guys, on a successful first year! Hope it's been fun for you!? It sure has been fun for us ...;-)...! Thanks for creating this!
Thank you!
Happy 1st anniversary to you!
Been watching your video for around 4-5 months (TH-cam recommended me your house tour at that time) and I would say your videos are my type of information I want to watch in TH-cam
I love how the informations are presented and being direct to the problem makes it easier to focus to the information
Thank you for making videos, wishing all of you a great year ahead
Thank you so much! We are happy you enjoy them.
Thank you so so much for the extremely kind words. We are thrilled that you enjoy our videos.
Thank you so much! Good luck with your move. 😊
Thank you! We thought it would be a funny way to share where we started. 😊
Happy first anniversery lovely Family Ashton Jonathan and JACK! 😍🙋♂
Thank you Arno!
Your first year is great. Love your content, and I only found you about a week ago. Keep going this way. ( Love the bicycle content :)
Echt Spitze.
Danke!! 😊
Thank you!
Very nice of you to say, thank you!
Happy Mother's day! I'm glad that I found you on TH-cam. Greetings from Gutach (near Freiburg)
Happy Mother's Day to you too! We're so glad you found us!! (Also, the Gutach Valley is GORGEOUS! What a beautiful place to be!)
Congrats to a sucsessful first year!
Thank you so much. ♥️
Danke!! 😊😊
Happy anniversary to you. Following you unfortunately only for 4 months, keep on doing this videos
Happy mothersday Ashton!!
Really been looking forward to this video.
Your channel is so informative and unbiased/balanced to different viewpoints.
Keep up the great work,
Kind regards Alan
Thank you! We are excited to see what Year 2 brings. ♥️ Have a great Sunday!
Interesting, informative and fun.
As always.
Thanks.
Looking forward to the next year.
Thank you! We can't wait to see what it brings for our little channel.
