I am not much of a country fan, as well. But somehow their acapella country appeals to me big time. Also could just be that their talent overshadows the genre.

Everything you hear in this song is done vocally. There are no instruments used. Yes, it was recorded in a studio and audio mastered for best quality, but it's all vocal. The guy making the harmonica sounds is also doing all the drums/percussion in the song.

I'm not much of a country music fan myself (I don't typically listen to it by choice), but Home Free's talent, style and spin on their songs (covers and originals) quickly had me hooked. You'll be certain to have a lot of "Home Fries" joining you soon with comments and suggestions. I usually wait until I've watched at least a couple of Home Free reactions on a channel before I subscribe, but I've already hit the subscribe button here! Great and honest review!
Some of the less country sounding songs in their playlist include ones others have suggested already (Butts Remix, End of the Road, All About That Bass) as well as Can't Stop the Feeling, and Try Everything. They just released their cover of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" and that is the one currently stuck in my head.

They really do cover a wide range. They have a certain country/folky sensibility to a lot of their stuff, especially their originals, but there is a lot that isn't. As has been mentioned, Castle on the Hill is well done. End of the Road is sublime. Their version of Keith Urban's Blue Ain't Your Color leaves the Country genre. Their recent "quarantine" videos recorded from their own home areas have been dorky, but good. Sunday Best is one I recommend from this period.

If you want to try some more Home Free but not country try their covers of Boys II Men’s “End of The Road” or Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling”. If you want to try more country then their version of John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” is usually a song even non country fans don’t mind hearing from time to time. “Ring of Fire” is great both the one with Avi and the one from the competition show “The Sing Off” where Tim (the bass of Home Free) hits an even lower note then he does in the version with Avi. Comedic covers include All About the Bass, the Butts Medley (known as the Butts Remix and a mix of styles), Thank God I’m a Country Boy, Quarantine (to the tune of Billy Joel’s song “Honesty”).

So I have actually watched a few of your PTX reactions & enjoy you. After watching your first Home Free video I have now hit that subscribe button. I'm a PentaFry lol!! I so appreciate your genuine honesty, yet still having the open mind & willingness to at least check it out. Since you don't "like" Country or Gospel there are a few you may not particularly care for, but you seem to appreciate artistry & talent & that there is in abundance lol. They have a ton that aren't in either of those genres that you may actually enjoy! Or at least be amazed & entertained lol! There's even Ring of Fire that features Avi from PTX & although traditionally "Country"....just be mindful it's acapella....no constraints....lol so they do what they wish with it. Their voices don't have the super strong twang in them other than this song truthfully. It's there just enough to know THEY are steeped in Country but the genre they're covering may NOT be. They covered Boyz II Men End of the Road. They did a mashup of songs calked "Butts". They did Meghan Trainor All About That Bass. And countless others. They have IMPECCABLE harmonies & ALL of them have extensive ranges. The Beatboxer is an Alien just like Kevin from PTX. His name is Adam Rupp. Check out his "drum solo" video if you would like to get a better understanding of that musical confusion of sonic delight was, that you just experienced lol. My jaw hurt by the time I picked it up 🤣🤣🤣 Whatever you do.....do NOT watch Mayday until you have at LEAST a good 6-7 Home Free Videos under your belt! Now, I look forward to continuing with you on your journey down both rabbit holes😎😎

You haven't heard anything yet. Tim Foust, the bass, can go much lower than that. I have been to 6 of their concerts and his low bass vibrates your body and your chair. Check out their TH-cam channel for some songs that are not country. They won the "Sing-Off" show too. Check out their performance of "Ring of Fire" on the "Sing-Off" and listen to the judges and MC's reactions after they sing. Time Foust, the bass, can also go pretty high, up to A5.

I know your having lots of fun. Home Free is The only country accapella group, but they do everything. The beat boxer Adam Rupp is known as the Freak of nature. He has a video doing a drum solo. Since the pandemic started they've released a new video every other Friday....so far they've done at ten. They've done this from their respective homes then send their parts in to their editing and arrangement people. Everything they've done is amazing. They did a little bit of everything and there'll be another one coming in two weeks. They're very dedicated. Just subscribed hoping you'll give them a chance. Tim Foust the bass hasn't sung here as low as he can go. God bless and stay safe

Welcome to Home Free! Try their Original Timeless, or the covers of Everybody Walkin' This Land, Boys II Men’s End of The Road, or Can’t Stop the Feeling if you aren't into the country sound. Maybe even their recent cover of Sunday's Best. A lot of their music doesn't sound country, even if they are classified that way. One of the things about Home Free is that although there is almost always a small amount of country flavor, they sing a wide range of genres ..making each song slightly their own without murdering the covers that they do. They don't always sing country music or with a country accent. They cover a huge variety of music genres, including originals. Their more recent music is less country, especially since they started doing more original music. It's my first video of yours to watch so I'm not sure what you are interested in but you might want to try their video of "End of the Road". Also, Adam makes the harmonica sound at least partly through his nose. You can see him for a brief moment in the video holding the side of his nose, closing off one nostril.

They are not too country because they have a beatboxer and not a banjo. I'm not that much into the country either, but usually they jazz up country and their harmonies are so good you have to check out another one. Try another, you pick, they take country tunes and add beat to them and also take pop, R&B tunes and add a country flair to it and they are very unique in what they do. These guys do have a few religious songs in their hundreds of videos, but so do PTX, Voiceplay, or about any other acapella group, because that is acapella's roots.Home Free won the Sing- Off season 4, the season after PTX.

Agree. Watch their live version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" that they first arranged for the Singoff TV show. Then watch the lip-synced studio version around the campfire, with Avi Kaplan as a guest artist. (Tim goes really low in both versions.) Then, at some point, watch "Mayday" and have them mess with your head.

Yep, ALL music done by Home Free is done true acapella.
In this song, instruments were performed by the 2 Adams - Adam Rupp (beatboxer, Drums, Woodblock, Harmonica etc.,) & Adam Chance (Jew's Harp & other various).
HF do bunch of great covers though I'll warn ya in advance, they maintain their southern country flair.
OH, & since ya like Pentatonix, you should give listen & react to:
Pentatonix - Bohemian Rhapsody [Acapella cover]
    th-cam.com/video/ojRj2JK5oCI/w-d-xo.html
Pentatonix - The Sound of Silence
    th-cam.com/video/gdVjVtpr55M/w-d-xo.html
Home Free - Ring of Fire (featuring Avi Kaplan of Pentatonix) [Acapella cover]
    th-cam.com/video/0l3dsHCScxU/w-d-xo.html
BTW, the 5 part harmony acapella category is presently dominated by 3 groups, you've listened to 2 so far.
Now ya need to complete the last leg of the Triple Crown & sample some VoicePlay
The previous 2 have their niches (Pop/rock for PTX & Country for HF),
VoicePlay is big on movie song medley covers, especially Disney animated movies
The Little Mermaid - MEDLEY (feat. Rachel Potter)
    th-cam.com/video/zJVhVFRknTU/w-d-xo.html
MOANA MEDLEY | VoicePlay Feat. Rachel Potter
    th-cam.com/video/4nM5JZ6DL_U/w-d-xo.html
Frozen 2 Medley Feat. Adriana Arellano | VoicePlay
    th-cam.com/video/TAJB7O1oRRk/w-d-xo.html
** This one is my personal fav: VoicePlay - Oogie Boogie's Song | The Nightmare Before Christmas [Acapella cover]
    th-cam.com/video/EbxkOntz2SA/w-d-xo.html
Voiceplay's Geoff Castellucci does a 5 part solo cover of The Jungle Book's "The Bare Necessities" song th-cam.com/video/GaHV8yILG2k/w-d-xo.html
NOTE: The bass singers from Pentatonix (Avi Kaplan), Home Free (Tim Foust) & VoicePlay (Geoff Castellucci) are all well known for hitting notes so low they destroy mics, subwoofers & stage speakers during their live performances.
OHOHOH... and I'd be almost criminally negligent if I didn't hype one of the most incredible female vocal talents today
The Phoenix of the Philippines, Morissette Amon -
"Akin Ka Na Lang" [Original song] on the WISH 107.5 Bus th-cam.com/video/p2FXQgtmPDw/w-d-xo.html
Note: While Morissette can speak at least 3 languages fluently including English, this is sung in her native tongue Tagalog, So you'll want to turn on your CC to see what she's singing.
    REACT & ENJOY!

They started as primarily country but have really branched out. I also suggest "Butts Remix," and their cover of Shakira's "Try Everything."

Pedantic comment, 'cause I'm a pedant. In music, the word "forte" has 2 syllables because it is Italian. A person's particular strength is described by the word "forte" as well. But it's origin is French, meaning that the final vowel is silent and there is only one syllable.

Lots of crossover of Home Fries and Pentaholics. People who like one group tend to like the other as well.

What you claimed as the original was not. This song was first published in 1916 (put to paper). By that time, the song was already an old old American Folk song. The originator of this song is unknown.

I see that this was a year ago, so I hope you have listened to some of their "not country" songs. I don't like what I would call "classic" country. But Home Free has done a ton of other stuff. Just a few weeks ago they did a killer cover of the Doobies' Listen to the Music. And they have a ton of really funny videos. Butts Remix, a cover of All About the Bass - which really is all about Tim, the bass guy. Just so many. I think it's a little unfortunate that you started with one of their most "countrified" performances. I hope you moved on to some of their other stuff and enjoyed it.

You need to see Ring of Fire by these guys and featuring the old bass from Pentatonix, Avi Kaplan. How aboout acapella country regae? The twangy insrument you're searching for is a Jews Harp. For some thing not so country try Mayday, or Wake me up when it's All Over.

Also no harmonica and no drum set.

Well, my positive attitude is to agree with you... I don’t like country music, either. A particular pet peeve of mine (you see this on a lot of singing competition shows) is when their singing voice has an artificially country or twangy voice, which they don’t have when they speak. I feel like we’re getting this here. Are these guys really from log cabins in the hills of Kentucky or Tennessee? Do they drink moonshine? I don’t like it. I don’t think it’s even country as much as bluegrass. I dunno. I don’t like. Doesn’t Avi Kaplan do some work with them?!

Austin Brown, the tenor with the more obvious twang in the song, is from Georgia, and does have a natural twang to his accent, but he did emphasize it more for the style of this song. Avi sings with them in a cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," also an excellent song for listeners new to Home Free, especially those with an existing Pentatonix appreciation.

    • @DeweyGotanycheese
      @DeweyGotanycheese 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

jypsy2000 Well, I’m from and live in GA and I’ve never heard anyone with a twang like that here. Ring of Fire is a toughie for me because, even though it’s a Johnny Cash song, I grew up knowing Olivia Newton John singing it! Warps my brain! 🧠 I started listening to it the other day and I had to turn it off after just a few seconds. I’ll try a song again sometime, because I’d really like to see how Avi blends with them.

It occurs to me that some judge on a competition show chewed someone out about their exaggerated country accent and made them redo it and it sounded much better. Still had her country accent, but it didn’t sound exaggerated. Someone below suggested a song that I think I’ll listen to, and I promise to do it with an open mind!

The high tenor (Austin, started the song) is from Georgia, the deep bass (Tim) is from Texas, the baritone/bass (Chance, was doing the jaw harp beginning & End) is from Alabama, the tenor (Rob in glasses) and the beatboxer (Adam) are both from Minnesota.
