I loved listening to his show every Saturday, and whatever was going on in our household always came to a stop while he did these segments. Regarding his transgressions, NPR was way too heavy-handed when they removed all the episodes from their site. The shows are simply too important a national resource for them to discard and should live on!

    • @griffenspellblade3563
      @griffenspellblade3563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I didn't think they had a choice. The music segments were never saved as NPR never had permission to keep them. All they could save was the storytelling. I would not be surprised if they were asked to remove those too.

I grew tired of these monologues long before he got tossed, HOWEVER, I listened to his show frequently, mainly for the music. I find Keillor slightly tedious, and hammy.
All this to preface my extreme distaste for the way he was treated and assumed to be guilty. He didn't dignify the charges with a defense, and just accepted the sour grapes he was handed.
Another Minnesotan, the funnier and most astute Senator Al Franken received similar treatment. His loss was truly tragic for American government. He is also still around, and still incisive and germaine.
Between the two, I have no love for NPR, Minnesota, or the mindless, insipid minions of #MeToo, as opposed to legitimate victims.
I'm sure the woman whose bare waist was touched (allegedly) by Mr. Keillor will need therapy for the rest of her natural life, but at least she has a pound of flesh with which to pay for it...bless us all, every one.

Your tangled wool brain is a tedious mess.
      Garrison Keillor is not.

@@MsAmpersand I think you were replying to me, not Kurt B. And while I find your argument well-reasoned and thorough, I must emphatically state that my post is merely an opinion, not verifiable fact. I'm glad you possess the wherewithall to so thoughtfully rebut me, but I stand firm. I also respect your eloquence and your right to a contrary opinion. Just be you...

The first time I heard the News From Lake Wobegon was in 1998 on NPR radio. I used to study English that time. I was advised to listen to something interesting in English. So I accidentally heard his show on the radio. Since then my English is mush more better thanks to him and his shows.
His shows are not just about funny stories, it is also about good music and poetry. And of course his stories are not just funny, but they are cozy and warm.

It’s NPR that behaved so badly through the persecution of Mr Keillor. How dare they publically stand in judgment on someone else’s behavior particularly when NONE of their business. They should examine THEIR OWN behavior before standing in judgment of others.

It was not NPR. Minnesota Public Radio did the job. Keillor was NOT always the nicest person backstage, but that was irrelevant compared to what was done. I think the whole thing was blown out of proportion. As someone who got called out for being a jerk in a similar way years ago, I get it. Some people do need to get fired, but I don't feel punishment fit the crime. Perhaps while there is time, he can come back. I'd love that.

@@tgfabthunderbird1 I followed his downfall a little bit. Caught that it was one woman who said he put his hand on the middle of her back. She ignored it at first, but then mentioned it to some authorities, not the police, but some of the big wigs at NPR or Minnesota Public Radio or their HR or something like that. I'd like to hear her side of it, the whole thing, all the times that "it" happened, or a detailed version of the one time.
Do we even know who she was? Did she ever say anything public about the details of this event or these events?

Wasn't the shows greatest fan, but one time driving from my parents' house in Massachusetts to my apartment in Maine near Christmas I had a total moment. Wasn't feeling good, don't like Christmas time, however, Garrison and the audience began to sing Silent Night together. I joined in and sang along all by myself on the long ride...and wept at the end of the song. It was the most enjoyable part of that holiday.

I remember that moment in the show, and I clearly recall weeping uncontrollably when the crowd joined in. It was a beautiful moment that transcended religion, race, politics etc. APHC was one of the most pure, honest, and soulful artistic expressions ever created. Radio is a lost treasure, and it needs to be resurrected.

For many years I would listen to Garrison Keillor on Saturday night at my home in Austin, Texas and always knew my father was listening to this show in Beaumont, Texas at the same time. It was one of those long-distance cultural bonds that we always had. Taking him off the air was a very Chinese Communist "Cultural Revolution" thing to do, where everything and everyone good was condemned until the only people left to rise to the top, and who then ruled with malevolence, were the most ignorant and mean-hearted of the lot. I am also reminded of the Twilight Zone episode "It's a Good Life" where the boy would banish the adults to the cornfield if they dared to say something he didn't like, and simply created at constant state of terror. Thank you, Garrison Keillor, for so many years of elevated entertainment. You are a national treasure.

That TZ ep, "It's a Good Life" is from a story by Bixby, I think Jerome Bixby. I never saw the TZ ep, though I understand it stars Ron Howard. The story sticks with me to this day, how its premise is: what would happen if a child were granted nuclear powers? Or, what would happen if a kid had his finger on "the Button"?

The Prairie Home Companion was played on Australian radio every weekend during the 80’s. My husband and I used to listen to it while we had lunch and loved the show. I always wondered what the storyteller looked like and now I know. I clicked on this because I recognised the name Lake Wabegon. How wonderful to hear a story again.
I’m sorry to hear that this man was drummed out of doing his show because he apparently touched a woman’s back. We had a Prime Minister that put his arm around the Queen of England’s back but he wasn’t chucked out of office, well not at that time anyway. The English press were horrified that such an act occurred. We Aussies are fairly casual about such occurrences.
Bring back the Prairie Home Companion on TH-cam. I loved it.

It was about 1983 or 84 on Saturday after Thanksgiving. We had taken the kids to see Santa Claus come into our town on a helicopter. While my wife cooked supper I tried tuning in my favorite rock station. Somehow got PBS and it was in the middle of the Lake Woebegone monologue. I wasn’t sure if it was real or satire but I liked it and I was hooked ever since. Read several of his books and seen the movie version. Biggest regret was not seeing him live.

You *must* see him live, if you possibly can! I’ve been to several APHC shows, and also seen him a couple of times since MPR did their foul worst. He appears in different formats, sometimes more story, other times more song, depending on who his guests are. Back in the APHC days, fans would swarm him as he walked back and forth from the stage to meet-and-greets, etc. And shy and reserved as he is, he made time to sample and praise every rhubarb pie made lovingly just for him (I’m sure COVID-19 has ended the pie presentations, but still…) Hope you get to see him - it’s a wonderful experience!

When I heard His show for the first time in February 1986, I heard Garrison sing a simple song that I instantly memorized. That evening Carrie and I went to a Sunday school class Valentine party, where we played a party game, where we were asked to write something romantic. I wrote, and then read aloud, the song I'd heard on Garrisons show that afternoon, called "Tell me why". Everyone thought it was clever and romantic, and I guess Carrie did too, 9 months later Clay was born. Thanks, Garrison!

I have been trying to learn how... it's not as easy as you make it look... especially when you only get 500 characters per joke.. social media is a lot like writing for cereal boxes.. ya gotta make it short and sweet ✌️

and if you need more room.. hey... that's the cereal part... like raw bits Mr Keillor 😁 fresh from the great state of Minnesota.. lake woebegone

It was either my 1999 or 2002 trip to Australia I was sitting next to a lady from Australia on a flight. From conversation she learned I was from Minnesota and she said oh I remember A Prarie Home Companion show that a public radio station near her used to carry. She was upset when the station no longer played the show.

☆ saw the show years ago in San Diego at Sea World outside. 'Twas not a more typical sunny day but overcast with a drizzle. He joked about being in a red bathing suit 😳. He did have on red socks. I enjoyed watching folks doing the sound effects when Garrison told his stories.

I always tried to catch the News, although I felt the writing was not as good in the latter years. I taped many from the Eighties and early Nineties, and converted them to files I can enjoy on my computer... Some really good, strong, stories that I still find joy in.
