I’d have to disagree about Joy regressing as a character. She didn’t seem as controlling as she was in the first movie. She let the other emotions take charge, she was welcoming of the other emotions, and acknowledged when things aren’t ok. Sure she made the Back of the mind machine, but the other emotions agreed that it was good for Riley. And at the end when they got back to headquarters she wasn’t immediately trying to retake control. She just wanted to stop Anxiety
i honestly also thought that Joy was regressing as a character in that scene where the other emotions praised anxiety and she was only pretending to be amazed by her. At first, it was as if she was jealous of the fact that she’s not the heart of the group anymore but that quickly dissipated in the scene where she admits that it just hurts that maybe she really isn’t what Riley needs anymore. It wasn’t jealousy or control issues that made her act that way, it was hurt in her realization that Riley doesn’t need her as much anymore.
"Inside Out feels like the type of story that you could keep expanding on forever" I have said this for years. Pixar could continue to show Riley's life without it feeling like a cash grab.
Personally, I think there should be a limit. I think 5 or 6 movies would be enough as far as expanding the story as much as possible without it growing stale is concerned.
I appreciated that they didn't make Anxiety a full out villain. She's a regular emotion, like the others, but she goes to extremes in her pursuits. She reminds me of Joy from the original, in that both were concerned for Riley.
I liked that too! Her over eagerness to please when first introduced felt so real, anxiety isn't just being nervous and scared all the time about bad things, it's being nervous about how you come across, being pleasant enough, friendly enough, making a good impression, egar to please, etc.
@@Latejibe anxiety is normal to a point, everyone will and has experienced it before, it's when anxiety becomes a chronic condition or disorder that it's an issue. But experiencing anxiety now and then is a normal part of life Experiencing anxiety everyday to the point you can't function at all or it makes life difficult to navigate is when it's not normal. Having a few things that regularly make you anxious like a presentation or so is normal Being anxious by just leaving your house every single day is not Anxiety at trying out for a team or meeting new people or starting a new job or school year is normal Anxiety that gives you heart palpitations at the thought of going to school or seeing someone you already know is not In some instances yes, anxiety it normal and a part of life, it's just when it's chronic, or causing anxiety attacks, or is something that happens everyday say that it isn't I have an anxiety disorder and until I was 13 I thought it was normal to feel overarching doom or that something was always wrong, until my doctor explained that while anxiety is normal in some instances what was happening to me was not, and that was why I needed to get checked out.
I think the reason envy is more bubbly is because envy and jealousy may go hand in hand but they are completely different emotions. Envy is all about wanting what someone else has while Jealousy makes you feel threatened by other’s success. But i would of loved to see Pride that would be a good addition
Also Ayo Edebiri who voiced envy said she wanted to showcase that side of envy, that almost golem-likeness of wanting what someone has, that small frame but big eye'd-ness because you only see what someone else has. Also she's cute so I can't deslike her.
Riley repeatingly saying "I'm not good enough" felt like some sort of personal attack to me. I've had a similar anxiety attacks before and Riley's one was just way too personal for me to handle 😭
It's crazy to think that while you can't stop that voice in ur head saying 'I'm not good enough" if u look around some of the random people there may be having that same thought
i loooved the car scene with riley and her friends, disgust's micro-inspection of facial features was so funny to me and relatable in the preteen/ teen melodrama of it all. Just a hallmark of being a teenage girl lmao
I loved this too. My tween daughter (not autistic) asked me (autistic) how relatable that scene was to me and I said "not at all". She found it completely relatable, however.
I actually like how envy wasn’t that “evil” because envy can be a positive or beneficial emotion at times. It’s a good angle to take for the character and very subversive imo
Yes! I was glad too. For once it was treated like a neutral emotion that can do both bad and good. Like any other emotion. They all exist for our benefit after all. Envy can be a motivation and inspiration, finding something in someone else you suddenly want and working hard to get the same.
Finally, a Pixar sequel which is on par with the original. It's more mature in its themes, and I appreciated how they dealt with panic attacks, and gave insightful tips on how not to let your anxiety overwhelm you in stressful situations.
@@omegasteve8485 this is subjective, it could have a third one because there are many plot potentials , but it could also be a cute funny series with each episode interpreting something serious in the life of Riley and how emotions handle it (like in the video said: bullying, a crush)
Yes, and they can't force her to do something she wouldn't. This is why Anxiety had to really push on Riley(and by this further hurting her) to make her go and sneak into trainer's offcie.
I really resonated with Inside out 2. I felt really bad for Riley when she had that anxiety attack because I had my fair share of panic attacks too where I thought I wasn’t good enough. I got a bit teary eyed at that part.
Seconded, it's one of my favourite Pixar films in recent years, and has a sweet message. My little cousins adore it as well, and have seen it so frequently, they can practically recite the script in their sleep.
I thought I was the only one!!! I love Luca it’s one of my comfort movies, I wish it had gotten a theatrical release cause I feel it would have gotten more love. Its very Studio Ghibli vibes.
The first Inside Out movie came out NINE years ago was so crazy. One of few Pixar movies that had me in tears so much and i was 12 at the time of its release. I still have the tickets for the first movie. Now here i am, back at the same theater with the same seat where i watched the first movie to watch the second movie so that's a pretty cool 🤗
I enjoyed hearing a lot of your critiques! The only one I disagree with is Joy regressing as a character. I actually feel the complete opposite and immensely enjoyed her development in this film far more than the first. Her annoyance and first outburst at having to deal with the other emotions constantly turning to her for leadership had me laughing so hard. Seeing her accept that she may have less of a role in Riley's life is a great motif that builds on the first film. In addition to that, Joy wasn't the only one deciding what memories to throw to the back of the mind. Fear, Disgust, Anger, and Sadness all had memories that they wanted to get rid of as well. If Joy was the sole emotion getting rid of these "negative" memories, I would agree that it's a regression, but since it's something that the emotions do collectively, it's not entirely a regression.
I’m gonna be completely honest, Turning Red was such a bomb film for me because I watched it as soon as I became 18 and it made me so nostalgic and appreciative of my younger tween years and also reminded me to continue having fun later on in life ❤
Lol me and my class watched it on our senior trip and we hated it. Cringed so hard, it felt more like a adults idea of teen age hood then what it actually is. Maybe we just couldn’t relate to it. I felt inside out 2 did better
I cant belive so many people hate the movie, its honestly one of my favorites Pixar movies of all time, its so cute but also very sentimental, i cry everytime i watch it, i feel like the fact that people complain about the girls being fangirls is such a reflexion of how people diminish "girly" interest, but them liking the band its really the way of bonding with each other and start to develope a scence of independence from their family and break toxic cycles with in the family, very underated movie in my opinion
Out of all the movies where they could make a bunch of sequels, Inside Out works the best for it imo. It's such an interesting concept that could be applied to multiple stories. They could even make movies about riley's life up until old age and it would still make sense
I appreciate the effort in putting in new perspectives or new ways the filmmakers could have approached the movie (because obviously this movie isn’t perfect), but I feel like your criticisms are going a little too far than past videos: I don’t really remember a lot of positive comments about the movie itself even though you mentioned in the beginning how you were going over the negatives AND the positives. Personally, I resonate with the sequel a lot more than the first, and although the plot wasn’t the most perfectly- made script in the history of animation, it was a great film thats now going on my comfort-movie list.
yeah i noticed that too 😅 i think, even though she said she did generally like the movie, the reason the criticisms take so much time (or feel like they do) is because discussing how something could improve tends to take more time than stating why you like something, at least from my experience 🤷🏻♀️ edit:typo
Agree. Typically I enjoy the criticisms but this video was a bit overboard suggesting almost a complete rewrite of the movie + ignoring the positive things that many people are resonating with. Definitely not a perfect movie but have to disagree with a good amount. Framing the story within the hockey context added a very relatable/specific scenario for anxiety to shine.
@@RavetoonI was about to say the same thing. Her criticisms required for someone to rewrite the movie lol. It’s easy to imagine a better story when you already watched the movie😭. Criticism is about improving what’s already there and expanding the given concepts. Not imagining different scenarios and rewriting it.
The anxiety scene made me cry my eyes out like a gasket as my heart raced. I struggle with suppressing emotions which became a thing in my early teens. But seeing this movie in my late teens made me question whether the premise would apply to me or not because of the huge gap of time between the first and second films and me not being thirteen anymore. But it was very good at conveying the panic attack scene, especially for me who struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. Normally movies don't make me cry, but next to Soul and UP, this one had me fighting back tears because of how much I related to Riley and her experiences. Especially concerning suppressing your emotions and the literal avalanche that comes along with that which I experienced earlier this year. My mom held my hand during the last few scenes which honestly just made it all the more impactful because this is a film not only for kids or teens but also for adults and it's truly amazing how people of all ages can come together and relate to and learn the different emotions and how it affects a person especially during their teenage years. Nice job Pixar, the bar was kinda low but you raised it.
as someone who's the same age as riley in inside out 2, i have to say that it portrayed puberty and "the early teenage years" in almost perfect accuracy. the only thing i didn't like however, was how easily the sense of self could be pulled from the pedestal. in my opinion, even a diminishing sense of self remains for quite some time before fading away completely. all in all, i think it may be better than the original inside out. i really enjoyed the character growth and storyline.
As someone with anxiety disorder, I feel like having anxiety slowly takeover hq would have also been a perfect metaphor for how anxiety slowly builds up through small things over time before completely taking over
12:02. I think the other reason is because it is a kids film and Puberty does have some physical stuff that requires adults to talk to kids that depending on the child’s age (young children) might not properly understand without the right education. So maybe the BO and the zit on Riley’s chin were the only things Pixar could talk about (although they attempted the puberty subject matter with Turning Red).
@@kittenmatchvids6440I agree. That was the aspect I was referring to with Turning Red which was not received well in terms of audiences’ reviews. Not to mention that since only females would experience periods, it would be a tough subject to discuss for younger audiences to understand without sex education.
Totally agree with u on this!! I loved the movie but they could've utilized the new emotions (besides Anxiety) to a bigger extent... to me they ended up feeling like side characters. Love the proposed emotions and also the idea that they should've split up/created a divide between the core 5 characters like fear ending up on Anxiety's side or something to make the ending feel more whole
“Ennui is boring”… I feel like that’s the point She’s the embodiment of being bored and she’s good for the plot in those moments where the other emotions doesn’t know what to do in that social interaction And honestly a teen not feeling bored isn’t really realistic lol
If fear and sadness sided with anxiety, that would undo everything they learned in the first movie. They work as a team now, so I don’t see why they would want to change to anxiety’s side.
Inside Out 3 Theory: I think this will cover Riley and her emotions saving another person. Riley’s dark secret is that she accidentally harmed one of her classmates in the past which was overlooked by the other emotions as they did not see the long-term consequences of the action due to Anxiety not being present. As a result, Riley will meet the classmate again but this time the classmate’s emotional turmoil is what allowed that classmate’s Anxiety to win unlike Riley’s which gradually leads to self-destruction. The emotions saved Riley from the inside, now they will have to save someone from the outside.
It's just such a breath of fresh air that Pixar steps back to the right direction in making an Inside Out sequel. I saw the movie, I love it so much, I would be absolutely happy to see the success that this movie absolutely deserves. It's not as good as the first movie but it's definitely one of the more strongest effort for Pixar in recent years. So yeah, more power to them, good job 👍😊
In the sense of being adequate and can be worked with, you could say it is. But I must admit I did have a few problems with it though the movie was still really good. I am glad I got to watch a great sequel to an amazing and heart touching movie.
I actually like that they didn’t include potential crushes in this movie, because I feel like that’s always in most coming of age movies which can be relatable and I have nothing against it but it makes it a bit different, especially since not all people experience crushes that often especially as a tween where friendship is a lot more important
Generally love your takes, but I disagree with curiosity being a new emotion. Curiosity would’ve been with her in the last move. If anyone asks too many questions, it’s toddlers. Curiosity isn’t something you get in your teens.
I honestly really liked Inside out 2 (tbh i think pixar has had some pretty good movies i liked elemental, turning red was amazing, this was pretty good and Luca was also really good)
I love your analysis and wish you could be in the room with these writers. You have such brilliant ideas and it really shows how these creators have so much great material but come out with mediocre content. I hope there are more imaginations and creative minds like you in the industry.
I don't think the back of the mind machine was Joy being controlling, because all the primary emotions seemed to agree of its importance. I view it as emotional immaturity, literally not thinking of unpleasant things and prioritizing feeling good. It's the definition of being a kid. When the avalanche of bad emotions is processed by Riley, it shows she's growing up and requires more complex reflections from her own self.
Idk bout all that. Disney is still down over 1bil since last year in terms of box office sales. This is a good movie but it won't save them from the red.
The comments on your commentary are mixed but I am rather grateful for your perspective. I think I was so mesmerised leaving the movie that I missed some of the very points you raised like Envy feeling slightly off. It would have been nice to see Envy and Anxiety collaborate more smoothly or even pressure anxiety at times, grow bigger throughout the movie 🤷🏾♀️ with that said, as a Psychotherapist, it is very common to meet clients who are so consumed by anxiety that they cannot connect to anything else beneath the surface. I feel the movie captured this well.
RE: the puberty thing: The gross, physical parts of puberty (particularly for girls) was addressed in Turning Red. I think the puberty factor in Inside Out 2 was done extremely well and in a way that is a bit more universal. Doesn't matter what part of the gender spectrum you land on, your emotions are tinderboxes around this time, and they portray it in the movie as beautifully as the anxiety attack.
Respectfully I disagree with the incredibles 2 I actually really enjoyed it the story was very good I think the only criticism I have was the villain was cliche 😬
Despite that I knew it's not going to be as good as the first, I still managed to find a lot of enjoyment in it and I didn't mind that it was the sequel that we got. Yeah, the villain was pretty lame but the family dynamic is the one that kept me hooked from start to finish
yes i love how bob bonded better with the kids, it filled a hole in the first one because we barely saw him interact with them. I also loved Helen's storyline and jack jack was adorable lol
omg! I was not expecting a video review on the movie! Im so happy to hear your take! I love the first movie and I was SUPER excited for the second one! After seeing it, I have to agree with a lot of the points in this review. The thing about this franchise (that I think was even a weakness in the first film) is that I think the writers are not strong or commited enough to give the films more time for ALL Riley's emotions to interact with one another. To me that's the heart of this franchise, is seen these very specific characters beaker with each other in what they think should being done in a given situation and learn how to work together, which is just visualisation of every day life That's what I really enjoy about this franchise, yet in the 2 times around, I always left feeling dissatisfied and wanting more. I heard rumors of a possible TV spin-off, which I will argue is actually much fitting for the concept as they will give them the room for more interesting and hilarious interactions among all the emotions and to flesh out the world building. Which the ladder being another weakness of this franchise since the first film. Like the Personality Islands didn't matter in the second film, like AT ALL, which left me puzzled in how the Believe System and the Personality Islands work together if they are part of the same whole. They do a lot of visual metaphors for the sake of humor yet i think it always making the film weaker because open so many question of how things work upon closer inspection and a film can only explain you so much in a way that feels organic. i think is shame because the concept is so rich, yet it seems Pixar always ends getting overwhelmed with all the creative possibilities that they end up cherry-picking for the sake of having a product they can launch as soon as possible vs a film and a franchise that can hold the test of time. Im really curious to see what a third installment in the franchise would be like that takes the concept of Love, which I will argue is not a single emotion yet an experience that involve a lot of emotions at once which can set up an interesting situation for all the characters to once again figure out how to work together as a team that makes up Riley's mind.
I'va already seen it multiple times, everyone i watch it with leaves the theater with a specific moment that reminds them of a part of thier childhood, and its been really touching to see something that feels like real life. Everyone can relate to riley whether it's dealing with current anxiety, or looking back on how we forgot who we were in order to fit in as kids.
i actually thought envy was quite a good character! i love her design its very cute and small body big eyes because she only sees what others have, she made a lot of envious remarks like "omg val's hair is SO COOL" and "i was about to say that too we were both gonna say that at the same time" she said some negative, neutral, positive things and come on shes just so cute
Even tho they didnt really make envy spell out her emotion, anxiety did work along side envy to navigate riley in the direction they wanted as you suggested.
As someone with anxiety disorder, this movie hits so close to home. The depiction of anxiety attack, the build up to it, and the way her core belief kept on speaking on her head over and over while she was having an attack. It's all too real. I cried so hard when they all hugged her and when they finally accepted Riley can be all of that. I love this movie.
I reeeeally like your ideas 😮❤ I personally would have preferred if fear evolved into anxiety instead of being a new unrelated emotion. So that there aren't any or at least less new emotions introduced but the ones that are there growing with her 🤔 fear becomes anxiety, sadness becomes depression etc
I think her ages between the two movies should have been more like 9 and 10 than 12 and 13. I don't know any woman who didn't have a horrible mental breakdown when they were 13. I know disney could not have explained what it was like to be 13, especially not in a kids movie, but that's why she probably shouldn't have been 13.
I would love Inside Out 3 to not be about Riley's love life, but instead to be about Riley having a child and them having their own set of emotions[Curiosity, Mischief etc.]. That way, motherhood could be the main theme of the third film. First movie= family, second movie= friendship, third movie= motherhood.
I would happily watch 10 inside out films if they keep putting so much effort into them. Even though 2 is not perfect, it’s still a spectacular film in its quality from most aspects
a cute lil movie for sure, very very VERY relatable, at times almost painfully so, but it definitely was a rehash of the first and lacked substance at times. they definitely could’ve fleshed the characters and relationships out more
I finally saw this movie today. For some reason it came to Sweden a whole ass month after America, and I didn’t wanna spoil it for myself so I didn’t watch this video until now. Your editorial skills are as sharp as ever, Tessa!
This is probably not what they intended or a lack of ideas on their part but it feels like they made Envy bubbly and bluish cause if she was green (as envy/jealousy are so often associated) and mean, then that would make her too similar to Disgust much like how Ennui looks too similar to Fear
I found the phenominal. Being 15 while first watching it, it struck too many soft spots than I thought it would. I grew up with Riley and am now going through the same things as her. Its the most comforting experience.
I thought inside out 2 was so much fun to watch. My only nit pick was that I wasn’t sold on fear and anxiety being so different that they were 2 different characters. Fear already displayed traits of anxiety in the first film so I wasn’t fully convinced that they needed a whole new character. Regardless, I enjoyed the movie a lot and loved anxiety as an edition
i LOVED the nostalgia cameos 😂 i remember starting to use the word nostalgic when i was younger and my Dad was like "you are way too young to feel that"😂😂
I have always thought that Bree and Grace didn't feel that important, i think it came down to their introduction feeling rushed and them being sidelined for most of the film. If they made more scenes with them interacting with Riley, and making their personalities more different from one another would've helped it a lot And i also feel the new characters (specifically Envy and Ennui because Anxiety and Embarrassment are fine) weren't given that much to work with, while i do really like Envy and Ennui's designs (i feel Ennui's similarities to Fear might've been intentional) i feel like their concepts weren't executed very well when it comes to how they made Riley act. Neither of them did that much, and the stuff they did didn't feel that true to what their characters are supposed to be. Envy's personality is alright, but they could've made her a bit more yearning and jealous, because while envy and jealousy are different, they do share a lot of traits with one another and i think that could've been portrayed here Ennui is more egregious due to her making Riley feel more sarcastic or whatever the heck she was doing, instead of boredom like her name implies. They could've made her interact with the console whenever Riley felt bored, because that makes sense. The way Riley acts when Ennui is controlling her feels really random and out of character for her, the other new emotions fit the feeling of puberty quite well, you feel anxious or embarrassed and that makes sense. But whenever Riley acts '''''''''bored''''''''' it just feels forceful and, dare i say, cringy Yea that's all, love the movie, it's not perfect, won't stop me from loving these silly goobers
Ennui is the perfect emotion for teens today. Generally speaking, curiosity isn't their forte and when she jumped around upon realizing her phone was taken....it was perfect. Since Riley just became a teen, ennui can have a stronger role in the next movie
i dont see your idea about envy being jealous about her other 2 friends is because at the start of the film after riley got out of the car that she will focus about that situation about her friends after the hockey camp and film makers focused on the bigger picture about riley being more anxious about her future instead of friends, considering that shes a freshman she probably thought that highschool was a hugeeee deal because we saw riley being anxious about scholarships. but i do agree that envy was super bland and extremely chatty instead of being the negative emotion that it actually is in realm life
I'm feeling as Riley was growing up and became more mature, the movie became more mature as well to its valuable meanings. The anxiety attack at the ending and anxiety catching tears destroyed me, I don't think there's anyone that didn't felt that lol, either with this or with the constant overthinking and fake scenarios. What a smart interpretation of everything
My biggest complaint was, who leaves a freaking gymnasium and office unlocked?! It’s San Francisco! You never what kind of crazies are going to wander in
Your analysis was amazing. I watched the movie with my 10y/o daughter and didn't hate it but something seemed off. You were able to put into words how I felt and point out why the movie seemed lacking and almost unfinished. You are absolutely correct that they could have chosen better emotions that boredom. I will say the movie did really help me talk to my daughter whom suffers from anxiety due to trauma. It helped to put a face to her feelings. I think they explained anxiety very well in a way that kids would understand and connect with.
PAUSE!! ✋️ Did you say Incredibles 2 was a cash grab with very little substance? My disappointment cant get any lower... Nothing about the movie had little substance. 0:36 Unlike other movies, the incredibles was set up on four very strong pillars for its sequel: flushed out characters, continuity, growth, and damnit the twist. I think there comes a time in our old age where even good movies feel like they suck. 😅
I would have loved it if Ennui had a more defined role of maintaining Riley's mental energy by moderating how intense the other emotions can affect her. Ennui can first start off as neutral-deintensifying the effects of the original emotions and replacing it with her signature deadpan energy and sarcasm, and then later on be convinced by Anxiety to cut-off the original emotions in a false pretense that Riley's energy should best be spent on being very good at hockey to impress Val, and that the original emotions are too draining to continue to function. Later on in the film, Ennui can realize that the original five aren't necessarily draining, but rather the excessive control of one emotion leads to such a drastic, drained feeling, leading her to stop Anxiety when she went into a panic attack.
I was soooooo nervous going into it . I thought it was going to push a mental health agenda but I really like it ! I think they did such a tasteful job showing how the brain can work
This movie franchise could definitely have a series of shorts focusing on people in different stages of their lives, keeping the same voice cast of emotions in each person's head. I agree that this movie definitely kept things safe when it came to emotions and decision making of the protagonist. This movie for some reason made me think about Love Simon, which conveyed a very idealized scenario of coming out, which made Love Victor more interesting by default for conveying how not to respond to a loved one coming out. Inside Out 2 definitely played it light and polite when it comes to puberty, and they really should have used that panel of teenagers to really dig into how it feels when your body and mind change.
Huge confliction if Enui was Grey instead of Indigo: Memories Riley no longer cares for turn Grey. It would also shatter the illusion of all the memory orbs looking like rainbow marbles. If Enui's memories looked just like ones she doesn't care for anymore, Riley would lose some marbles! I do agree that Envy should've been less of a tag-along and should've been just as perceptive as Anxiety and Embarrassment about other things that were happening around Riley. The only D.A. excuse I could make for her is that the new emotions might not know much about Riley's personal life before they arrived, which is why it was so easy for them to brush off her friends. I would've liked to see a scene of the new emotions reflecting on older memories. Heck, I was a bit disappointed when Anxiety told Envy she could bring a memory down "next time". However, we never see that payoff 🤷🏽
I was really worried that pixar would screw this up like they did in the other sequels. Then I remembered how good the first movie was so I got hope that the writers would make a good sequel. This movie can be a chance for Disney and Pixar to start producing great movies again. If the upcoming Disney movies are as good as Inside Out 2, we have officially entered a new era for the company.
Okay, I get that y’all are happy with the bare minimum that Disney gave for understanding that anxiety shouldn’t be portrayed as a full-out villain, but this just goes on to perpetuate the harmful language that normalizes anxiety as an “emotion”. I've been diagnosed with a slew of anxiety disorders, and I can tell you right now that there is a STARK difference between Anxiety and Worry. Anxiety is not something that everyone experiences at a regular rate, it’s adrenaline, it’s survival mode, it’s not general nervousness about situations. From a young age I’ve noticed how when those of us with mental health issues started being able to talk about our experiences openly, in order to desensitize the masses to the terms, people without these DISORDERS use the terms like adjectives. Like, I know that a lot of us actually DO have these disorders, but we should not be normalizing them to this extent. Anxiety is not something that should be portrayed like this, it is not a cute little creature that lives in your brain, but it’s also not a villain. It is nuanced and complex to an extent that you cannot give it firm because that’s not what it is. Like, mainstream media companies saw how mentally ill the young people are and decided it was a good idea to harp on that by giving bottom of the barrel “representation”. Screw Disney.
@Zexionii2024 Yes, because that is what it is. It used to only be a disorder, but like all other disorders, the neurotypical people decided that these disorders were “relatable” and used them as adjectives that don’t fit them. OCD, Depression, Hysteria, Psychopath, Sociopath, Hysteric, Delusion, Narcissism, etc. It creates so many misunderstandings with the actual disorders. Anxiety is not something that everyone experiences. It should not be treated as such.
@@Fisheey I totally agree because I keep seeing people who like this movie and saying that it's relatable literally assuming that of course everyone goes through extreme anxiety to the point of having a panic attack when they go through puberty and everyone goes through anxiety on a regular basis as though there aren't other emotions that can cause serious harm to one's mental state like disgust or anger that have nothing to do with having anxiety. I actually find this idea quite worrisome because it's disgust and fear in particular that when ignored or exaggerated can lead to literal homicidal and/or suicidal thoughts, alla, the Nazis. I do think this particular thing was better explored in something like A Clockwork Orange or even the Hunchback of Notre Dame with Claude Frollo in particular, but yeah I do agree that anxiety is not something that everyone experiences and that people using other psychiatric diagnoses like stickers they can just throw on anyone, including themselves just to make themselves feel special or to vilify other people they don't like for whatever reason is terrible and does not help those who have these serious conditions. The unfortunate thing that people do to try to justify using words like this though is by claiming that there's a difference between the disorders and just regular emotions, which is just getting into a semantic argument and ignores that these terms or meanings were created by psychologists and psychiatrists for their own use that wasn't supposed to be used by the public in the first place. The original description of narcissistic personality disorder was narcissus-like as in the person was akin to the character of Greek myth. This leaves me wondering what do these people think about using terms like smooth brained, retarded, lame, idiot, and dumb in their original clinical ways and claiming that you're ableist because you use the word even though those terms were diagnostic labels and tools just a few decades ago? I gather that most of them would think of these terms as ableist and harmful to the people who get labeled with them, but they would think of using modern terms like narcissist, sociopath, OCD, anxiety and the like in the same way that they used those terms back then as completely different even though it has the same results in the end. That is to say a demeaning way to put someone down and dismiss them as being something other than human in their eyes or acceptable to society.
As someone who had awful anxiety at that age (and still kinda does) I find this movie very relatable. Also this might be unpopular but I actually enjoyed this more then the first movie. Although I agree that Riley going through puberty wasn't explored enough. I think giving her some acne or developing an awkward tween crush as a side thing would have been relatable and funny.
Interesting takes, I don’t know if I agree that your version would’ve been better than what came out but it’s still interesting to hear nonetheless. Although I have to disagree with your take of Turning Red because that movie hit me so hard and I think it’s such a well crafted window into what it’s like to be a tween while also being really creative story that was fun to watch. Also gotta disagree with you about Incredibles 2, as I did find it to be really funny and fun to watch thus making both movies noteworthy movies within the pantheon of Pixar movies.
Love your perspective on this! If Pride was a variable in this movie I think it would've been such a compelling dynamic for Anxiety and make it even more fascinating to engage with.
I just watched it in the theater, and imo, one part I didn’t like was when Riley got away with stealing the coaches notebook. She didn’t get in trouble, so it’s telling kids that it’s okay to do things like that.
If anything the movie was showing how it's NOT good. All the core emotions were emphasizing how bad of an idea it was, the team she wanted to be on told her not to worry about it, and she wasn't even rewarded positively for her efforts. The only feeling she received as disappointment. Also, anxiety is framed the entire movie as being in the wrong, which includes Riley's actions of ignoring her friends and looking at the book
@@peachesncharlotte see, that’s the thing. I get that the targeted audience is mostly already grown up or teens, but what about little kids that are there because of their siblings or they simply want to watch it? They can’t analyze as easily as adults and adolescents can, they kind of need a little more emphasis on that idea. But of course, they can still understand it.
kinda wish they tied the friends going to a different hs back to her trouble acclimating to sf. like ofc she’s abandonment sensitive! she JUST learned to cope with losing all her Minnesota friends. also thought it would have been cool for her to eventually switch teams to be with her friends, on the idea that “if i’m gonna be as good as val, im gonna beat her!” like a friendly competition challenge. tbh i just wish they did it with a different person cuz riley is literally the only white person in the whole main characters xD could be cool to see how culture influences these emotions that are shared between all cultures!
As much as I loved envy I found myself confused at certain moments when she pressed the console since I considered some of the things envy controlled was more in keeping with disgust/anger
Inside out 2 is probably the BEST recent movie they have made in the 2020s next to Turning Red i feel like both of the films have amazing reputation of puberty and coming of age elements that really make me relate to the films and some people may not relate to the films but many tweens and teens will like me truly a amazing film
Oh, off the top of my head, I think I've got an idea for a sequel Inside Out 3 plot (it's a bit weird, though, sorry). We get introduced to a new set of more complex (and less stable) sets of emotions, Love, Pride, Hate, Fear, Hope, Disappointment, Excitement... and their self-appointed leader, the mysterious Mania. However, what makes Mania stand out is it isn't exactly an emotion like the others. It's more like a parasite-like entity, and the others are unsure where it actually came from until they realise, so they think, that because of everything that had happened in the previous two films, in a sense, the other emotions, plus the new ones, had accidentally created Mania, or so it seems, Mania's true origins are left ambiguous in the end. At first, Mania comes across as a fun-loving, mischievous prankster goofball who is quite naughty... but reveals its dangerous true colours as it slowly seizes control and starts to feed off the other emotions... revealing its insidious & villainous true identity... Madness... and it wants to fully take over and corrupt Riley's mind... but of course, the other's emotions (and Riley's friends and family) unite to save her from Madness. Resulting in Riley's consciousness literally and figuratively being pulled inside out... giving her a unique chance to meet the personifications of her emotions, which in turn leads to giving Riley and her emotions a chance to confront Madness and defeat it... the plot then ends many years later, and we see Riley grown up and pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist and mental health councillor... (I wonder how Joy would react when Riley becomes unconscious, and somehow Riley's consciousness suddenly manifests before her and the others. During this thus, Joy and Riley actually meet face to face, which normally shouldn't and wouldn't happen..?)
"Inside Out feels like the type of story that you could keep expanding on forever"
I have said this for years. Pixar could continue to show Riley's life without it feeling like a cash grab.
Personally, I think there should be a limit. I think 5 or 6 movies would be enough as far as expanding the story as much as possible without it growing stale is concerned.
I feel like Pixar could also do some spinoffs as well
imagine they make a tv series about riley's life instead of a third film.
@@withJed Wait that would eat
Basically Pixar make their own Boyhood, that'd be pretty cool
I appreciated that they didn't make Anxiety a full out villain. She's a regular emotion, like the others, but she goes to extremes in her pursuits. She reminds me of Joy from the original, in that both were concerned for Riley.
I liked that too! Her over eagerness to please when first introduced felt so real, anxiety isn't just being nervous and scared all the time about bad things, it's being nervous about how you come across, being pleasant enough, friendly enough, making a good impression, egar to please, etc.
agreed!
I did hear that they had planned a more evil route for the new emotions but ultimately decided against it, which was a great choice!
Anxiety is the worst condition and emotion that exists. Not a regular one.
@@Latejibe anxiety is normal to a point, everyone will and has experienced it before, it's when anxiety becomes a chronic condition or disorder that it's an issue. But experiencing anxiety now and then is a normal part of life
Experiencing anxiety everyday to the point you can't function at all or it makes life difficult to navigate is when it's not normal.
Having a few things that regularly make you anxious like a presentation or so is normal
Being anxious by just leaving your house every single day is not
Anxiety at trying out for a team or meeting new people or starting a new job or school year is normal
Anxiety that gives you heart palpitations at the thought of going to school or seeing someone you already know is not
In some instances yes, anxiety it normal and a part of life, it's just when it's chronic, or causing anxiety attacks, or is something that happens everyday say that it isn't
I have an anxiety disorder and until I was 13 I thought it was normal to feel overarching doom or that something was always wrong, until my doctor explained that while anxiety is normal in some instances what was happening to me was not, and that was why I needed to get checked out.
I think the reason envy is more bubbly is because envy and jealousy may go hand in hand but they are completely different emotions. Envy is all about wanting what someone else has while Jealousy makes you feel threatened by other’s success. But i would of loved to see Pride that would be a good addition
SO true!
Also Ayo Edebiri who voiced envy said she wanted to showcase that side of envy, that almost golem-likeness of wanting what someone has, that small frame but big eye'd-ness because you only see what someone else has. Also she's cute so I can't deslike her.
you just mixed the definitions of the two lmfao
The Envy we saw in Inside Out 2 represents Benign (a more positive outlook of envy/jealousy).
They said there are two types of envy, one good and one bad.
This movie made me realize how easily anxiety can destroy your sense of self. I am not my emotions. My anxiety is not me.
Riley repeatingly saying "I'm not good enough" felt like some sort of personal attack to me. I've had a similar anxiety attacks before and Riley's one was just way too personal for me to handle 😭
Me too, the filmmakers consulted actual teenagers to create a realistic portrayal of teenage emotions, which really resonated with my teenage self.
same!
@@squelette0girl stand up 😭
It's crazy to think that while you can't stop that voice in ur head saying 'I'm not good enough" if u look around some of the random people there may be having that same thought
I agreed I deal with haters and nepotism at my job. I with stuff period n my life
i loooved the car scene with riley and her friends, disgust's micro-inspection of facial features was so funny to me and relatable in the preteen/ teen melodrama of it all.
Just a nitpick from a person with the bare minimum psych degree, a panic attack and anxiety attack are similar but different
I think a third movie will feel like a cash grab but a series would be amazing
@@omegasteve8485 you think wrong
@@omegasteve8485 this is subjective, it could have a third one because there are many plot potentials , but it could also be a cute funny series with each episode interpreting something serious in the life of Riley and how emotions handle it (like in the video said: bullying, a crush)
I love how the emotions control Riley based on the situation that she's facing rather than telling her what she should do
Seconded, it makes sense that you tend to act in the moment, especially as a child, when your brain isn't fully developed yet.
Yes, and they can't force her to do something she wouldn't. This is why Anxiety had to really push on Riley(and by this further hurting her) to make her go and sneak into trainer's offcie.
Except for anxiety which can be controlling
I agree with adding Pride instead of Ennui. Partly because Joy is the only “positive” emotion
I really resonated with Inside out 2. I felt really bad for Riley when she had that anxiety attack because I had my fair share of panic attacks too where I thought I wasn’t good enough. I got a bit teary eyed at that part.
Preach, Velma, take notice, Puss in Boots and Inside Out 2 perfectly exhibited how to deal with a panic attack.
The moment Anxiety pulled the string and it said "I'm not good enough" My emotions went like this 😳🥺😥😢😭
Honestly I really enjoyed Luca. I thought it was a really sweet film that I have rewatched quite a few times
Seconded, it's one of my favourite Pixar films in recent years, and has a sweet message. My little cousins adore it as well, and have seen it so frequently, they can practically recite the script in their sleep.
I agree Luca is a cute movie
I thought I was the only one!!! I love Luca it’s one of my comfort movies, I wish it had gotten a theatrical release cause I feel it would have gotten more love. Its very Studio Ghibli vibes.
agreed it;s such a feelgood summer movie i love rewatching it
I loved luca. It was such a cute gay movie ❤
Really? I thought it had just come out a few years ago. 2 at most.
Baby don't hurt me
I enjoyed hearing a lot of your critiques!
I’m gonna be completely honest, Turning Red was such a bomb film for me because I watched it as soon as I became 18 and it made me so nostalgic and appreciative of my younger tween years and also reminded me to continue having fun later on in life ❤
it also hits different since i grew up in toronto!!
Ikr!!! It’s such a good movie 😭🩷
Lol me and my class watched it on our senior trip and we hated it. Cringed so hard, it felt more like a adults idea of teen age hood then what it actually is. Maybe we just couldn’t relate to it. I felt inside out 2 did better
@faithd2046 it's audience was cringe internet fangirls that no one really likes except each other and alienated many of it's audience members
Personally, I resonate with the sequel a lot more than the first, and although the plot wasn’t the most perfectly- made script in the history of animation, it was a great film thats now going on my comfort-movie list.
yeah i noticed that too 😅 i think, even though she said she did generally like the movie, the reason the criticisms take so much time (or feel like they do) is because discussing how something could improve tends to take more time than stating why you like something, at least from my experience 🤷🏻♀️
edit:typo
Ennui looks like the purple girl from Duolingo annxnfjf
UR RIGHTTT and its funnier because im taking the french course there
except duolingo did it better
My mom held my hand during the last few scenes which honestly just made it all the more impactful because this is a film not only for kids or teens but also for adults and it's truly amazing how people of all ages can come together and relate to and learn the different
emotions and how it affects a person especially during their teenage years.
Ya I figured she might even start her period at some point, but ultimately was like 'nah they won't do that after the Turning Red backlash'
@@kittenmatchvids6440I agree. That was the aspect I was referring to with Turning Red which was not received well in terms of audiences’ reviews. Not to mention that since only females would experience periods, it would be a tough subject to discuss for younger audiences to understand without sex education.
There needs to be an Inside Out 3 with Riley as either a young adult or an adult.
maybe Toy Story esque with Riley leaving for university at 18
Totally agree with u on this!!
“Ennui is boring”… I feel like that’s the point
She’s the embodiment of being bored and she’s good for the plot in those moments where the other emotions doesn’t know what to do in that social interaction
And honestly a teen not feeling bored isn’t really realistic lol
If fear and sadness sided with anxiety, that would undo everything they learned in the first movie. They work as a team now, so I don’t see why they would want to change to anxiety’s side.
Inside Out 3 Theory:
I think this will cover Riley and her emotions saving another person.
I thought it was perfect. I loved how they added new emotions! And the movie is my new favorite Pixar movie.
Disney/Pixar never left... We got many great things like Soul, Turning Red, etc. I'm glad to see Disney winning at the box office again, though
Idk bout all that. Disney is still down over 1bil since last year in terms of box office sales.
This is a good movie but it won't save them from the red.
I also agree with the vault comment and felt like the “big dark secret” was a waste of time if he wasn’t going to resurface again
i think this is a set up for a 3rd movie potentially!!
I agree !! I think it would have been more realistic if they showed her jealously of feeling left out
It was only 2 days sinc she hit puberty lol. It was not likely to see a full puberty transition that quickly lol
honestly companies should hire this girl to watch the movies before and let her give input. she slays every time.
@@800Ms-k6n I agree ❤️
yes i love how bob bonded better with the kids, it filled a hole in the first one because we barely saw him interact with them. I also loved Helen's storyline and jack jack was adorable lol
Ehh I agree with her it was sad
Yes
Envy and jealousy are two different emotions actually
To me that's the heart of this franchise, is seen these very specific characters beaker with each other in what they think should being done in a given situation and learn how to work together, which is just visualisation of every day life
That's what I really enjoy about this franchise, yet in the 2 times around, I always left feeling dissatisfied and wanting more.
I think Anxiety is the reason the film is better than its predecessor. So well written.
I reeeeally like your ideas 😮❤
I personally would have preferred if fear evolved into anxiety instead of being a new unrelated emotion. So that there aren't any or at least less new emotions introduced but the ones that are there growing with her 🤔 fear becomes anxiety, sadness becomes depression etc
I really liked Luca, but I'm very excited to see this one.
I think they wanted to focus on the emotional aspects of puberty more than other stuff bc of the backlash about puberty with Turning Red.
I would happily watch 10 inside out films if they keep putting so much effort into them. Even though 2 is not perfect, it’s still a spectacular film in its quality from most aspects
‘Swallow her pride’ ATE
a cute lil movie for sure, very very VERY relatable, at times almost painfully so, but it definitely was a rehash of the first and lacked substance at times. they definitely could’ve fleshed the characters and relationships out more
The anxiety attack had a few walk outs people felt uncomfortable
I finally saw this movie today. For some reason it came to Sweden a whole ass month after America, and I didn’t wanna spoil it for myself so I didn’t watch this video until now.
Your editorial skills are as sharp as ever, Tessa!
This is probably not what they intended or a lack of ideas on their part but it feels like they made Envy bubbly and bluish cause if she was green (as envy/jealousy are so often associated) and mean, then that would make her too similar to Disgust much like how Ennui looks too similar to Fear
I love your constructive criticism of the movie, Pixar should hire you 😍😍😍
Curiosity as a cat would be genius😂😂😍
I found the phenominal. Being 15 while first watching it, it struck too many soft spots than I thought it would. I grew up with Riley and am now going through the same things as her. Its the most comforting experience.
I thought inside out 2 was so much fun to watch. My only nit pick was that I wasn’t sold on fear and anxiety being so different that they were 2 different characters. Fear already displayed traits of anxiety in the first film so I wasn’t fully convinced that they needed a whole new character. Regardless, I enjoyed the movie a lot and loved anxiety as an edition
a comeback? what are you talking about? Pixar have been putting out great movies over the past few years
Maybe its financially becuz of how Lightyear and Elemental failed
Good ideas. The opening "Let's play some hockey!" is great. It was weird to watch a good Disney production these days.
i LOVED the nostalgia cameos 😂 i remember starting to use the word nostalgic when i was younger and my Dad was like "you are way too young to feel that"😂😂
Bing Bing served a purpose when he brought joy to me as he died sad and alone.
I have always thought that Bree and Grace didn't feel that important, i think it came down to their introduction feeling rushed and them being sidelined for most of the film. If they made more scenes with them interacting with Riley, and making their personalities more different from one another would've helped it a lot
And i also feel the new characters (specifically Envy and Ennui because Anxiety and Embarrassment are fine) weren't given that much to work with, while i do really like Envy and Ennui's designs (i feel Ennui's similarities to Fear might've been intentional) i feel like their concepts weren't executed very well when it comes to how they made Riley act. Neither of them did that much, and the stuff they did didn't feel that true to what their characters are supposed to be.
Envy's personality is alright, but they could've made her a bit more yearning and jealous, because while envy and jealousy are different, they do share a lot of traits with one another and i think that could've been portrayed here
Ennui is more egregious due to her making Riley feel more sarcastic or whatever the heck she was doing, instead of boredom like her name implies. They could've made her interact with the console whenever Riley felt bored, because that makes sense. The way Riley acts when Ennui is controlling her feels really random and out of character for her, the other new emotions fit the feeling of puberty quite well, you feel anxious or embarrassed and that makes sense. But whenever Riley acts '''''''''bored''''''''' it just feels forceful and, dare i say, cringy
Yea that's all, love the movie, it's not perfect, won't stop me from loving these silly goobers
What about the emotional climax? Did it land with you? For me, the part about needing to consciously summon joy as we grow older hit the hardest.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Bridgerton part 2
If I remember correctly she didn't get past season 1 cos it was too boring
Another perfect video! Thank you so much for the hard work & the endless entertainment
Nostalgia was my fave
I really liked turning red in fact I thought it was Pixars most psychologic film since inside so hopefully this will be just as good
i just wanna say, all the ideas you gave for the movie were amazing!
I loved turning red ♥️ i really did
How did you deal with the cringe scenes?
@@ibrahimihsan2090 teenagers are cringe, I found the friendgroup pretty cute and relatable 😂
@@margheritanardi8044 I'll give you a specific example. The tweaking scene.
@@ibrahimihsan2090 I laughed! Maybe I'm less cringe suscettible than most lol
PAUSE!! ✋️ Did you say Incredibles 2 was a cash grab with very little substance? My disappointment cant get any lower...
Nothing about the movie had little substance. 0:36
Unlike other movies, the incredibles was set up on four very strong pillars for its sequel: flushed out characters, continuity, growth, and damnit the twist.
I think there comes a time in our old age where even good movies feel like they suck. 😅
Well illegalization of supes again is odd and inconsistent outcome after 1st film.
I will say this, Inside Out 2 was one of the better sequels Disney had released in a while.
I am so sad that envy didn’t do anything important to the story
Your ideas are great!!
