You really have to appreciate how in each section of his career, he's been approaching the game differently with his body getting older. That midrange is a beauty to see
First five years, Lebron was shooting his 2 pointers below league average. He then vastly improved and has stayed above the league average the rest of his career. However, it was only until Miami that his 3 point percentage finally eclipsed and started to match the league average as 3 point shooting was more prevalent. His next stint with the cavs was when we started to see a more nuanced approach at the midrange, where his efficiency was still at a high level with a more balanced approach to jump shots in that area. Finally with the Lakers, we see perfect offense Lebron. Keeping his 3 point percentage alive with his waning athleticism putting a higher emphasis on his ability to make moves, not simply being an athletic beast. In every part of his career, he's improved drastically and the midrange ability wasn't as pronounced as it was with the second stint with the cavs.
Why isn’t this man in the MVP conversation? Leading his team in scoring in year 21 and carrying his team every night still is fucking insane. Literally everyone else is coming off the bench at his age and he’s not just starting but carrying the team still!
Because the NBA’s criteria for MVP has always been lazy, flawed, and narrative driven. If the storyline isn’t about LeBron by the end of the season, the Lakers aren’t a top 4 seed, and LeBron doesn’t put up 30ppg again, he won’t win it, regardless of how efficient he is, and regardless of how sorry the Lakers are without him.
