The East-West album cover is framed and hanging in my den. Coolest album and cover ever. Giants standing among giants.

The Butterfield Band influenced everyone from Eric Clapton to the Allman brothers to Santana. These guys were breaking musical barriers in the mid sixties like nobody's business.

The stones influenced Clapton . Butterfield has happening parallel to the blues scene in London . The stones were THEE blues act in the early 60's . Butterfield was watching the likes of muddy and wolf live . The stones were copying what they heard on Robert Johnson and Elmore James records . Clapton joined the yardbirds who took what the stones were doing before they "sold out" to write their own pop records .

The best and most tasteful harp player for a generation. 2 people gave a thumbs down. That's hilarious! Must have been standind on their heads

The best live band of all time.
If this really was part of the Troubadour session for the Butterfield Live album, the one I really can't believe that's not on the album was Gene's Tune.

Butterfield was deeply into Jazz and it really shows in these older recordings with Bloomfield. 2 geniuses that got screwed by their label and their crooked lawyer Rothschild. Bay area Bloomfield left Earth penniless and the Butterman was almost flat broke too in No Hollywood. I was a big fan as early as 1962 when the band played in Southern CA clubs for years....I first heard his band in Huntington Beach. I began playing harmonica when I heard him then and still blow now. Probably the only harp player that didn't ever copy any of Little Walter Jacobs licks. A genius and original. Bloomfield was certainly no slouch either. Thank you two artists! RIP

These guys were classic. Building on the tradition and rocking the house. Challenge to the younger generation. Go for it y"all.

The only white guy who could seriously play the blues. One of the greatest instrumentalists ever known. And I was lucky to be blessed with his friendship. R.İ.P. Paul

You'd better consider Memphis Charley Musselwhite, or Charlie Musselwhite as he became known.
Paul was the best, white or black, but Charlie was, and is, no slouch.

Saw him in 68 with the “Pigboy Crabshaw” line up at Toronto’s Massey Hall. Full house, jazzy sound, spectacular band. Left a big impression on this
Eighteen year old. The Pigboy Crabshaw album was brilliant and was played at many of our house parties. Elvin Bishop was terrific on guitar and I remain a fan to this day.

Great reoording! One of my biggest heros. Saw the band 13 times thru many permutations: Bloomfield, Bishop, Dinwiddy/Sanborn , young Buzzy Feiten another wiz kid. My favorite drummer was Phil Wilson. Elvin Bishop really stepped up when he became #1 when Bloomfield left ( "resurrection of Crabshaw) Probably my favorite album of all time. Great singer, harp player, and band leader who knew how to find and organize the best talent. (I think maybe Jerry Ragavoy did the amazing horn arrangements, but not sure) Nothing like a Butterfield show!

Have to agree Larry Gag. Absolutely NOTHING like a live Butterfield show. Their virtuousity would make you pay attention and make time go away for a little. The blues ain't nothing if it ain't happy. And Butter's bands were always happy and they exuded. that happiness to the audience. True professionals. I loved this band in all its versions.

"Wizard musician," Wow! Good description of Paul Butterfield. He could drive his audience into a frenzy when he blew his harp. UNbelievable to watch.

The venue is The Troubadour in Los Angeles in 1970, not Monterey Pop '67, or even the Monterey Jazz Fest, where Butter played in September 1966.

This live piece is quite excellent. However, the studio version is my favorite PBB song. And that's a mouthful. The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw is one of my fovorite albums. It's a shame most of these guys are gone.

I love it when he steps away from the close-mic and goes acoustic, lets his actual tone come through.
