Damn the man could play the harp. I heard him in 1967 when I was 16 yrs old. Took up playing the harp and still doing it to this day love it at 70. Paul My mentor!!
I met Paul when he picked me up hitching a ride to Willow. We stopped at the bear cafe for a drink he was super cool. One of my heroes for sure. Miss him still, but I got my records and blow some harp myself to cure my blues. Thanks Butter.

Wow you lucky guy.. He BLOWS me away . I loved Larry Adler but when I heard Paul play that harmonica , he was just breath taking . He died quite young . Mind you, what a fantastic life he had ... While he toured, that was the time amazing artists were on the scene . Live acts... the 50s 60s 70s were just electric ... The greatest gathering of talent was Woodstock no doubt about it . 3 days of Heaven . Whats the kids got now electronic crap . They never ever had the fantastic times we had .
I would agree totally. I was fortunate enough to see him live once in A HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM (believe it or not!) in Rochester, New York, at the time he had just augmented his band with horns. Paul was just incredible....
What a voice Paul had, and simply the greatest harp player. l have seen a few people post the top ten harp players and Paul isn't in there list. Nobody has influenced so many harp players and bands in the US as Paul.
Wow, so lucky you were to get a ride from him!!-when i was 15 or 16 the Butterfield Blues band record (Mono-mind you!!),..was my first record ever.i learned to play bass to that record,..lifting the needle up and restarting a song over and over!,..anyway,Fast Forward 50 years later,.i got to know his first wife where i live now (Virginia wale, she told me she went radio station-toradio station with that record)-(if it isn’t a small world??!!)-if i had only got to meet Bloomfield life would be complete!!
Great thanks for posting this..Sadly Paul passed just as the Video era got going.. I saw him being so great so many times and there's little record of those performances.. The Golden Retriever you see is named Butter.. He was a good friend for a long time..TJ
@@albertopick3585 He obviously missed the "Big" Walter. You must know Peter 'Madcat' Ruth then I would guess. I met him in Florida at a show in 1975/76 and after the big concert (Band "Sky King" with Chris Bruebeck they were opening for Earle Scruggs (Banjo- Bonnie & Clyde chase scene song "Foggy Mountain Breakdown", etc.) and after concert we played harps several hours at after party. He told me he was getting lessons from Big Walter at that time.
I would like a Hot Metal harmonica (or several) in the key of F. Hot metal is not known for every harp coming of the line in great tune. I know this cuz I have messed with them for years. So don't tell me it is a great harp out of the box - some are great, some are not. Some you don't even want to mess with. What I am asking of you is if you have a cheap source to buy those harps. New. Not used.
Paul Butterfield played Hohner Marine Band. Back then, when I started playing 1974 they were in the cardboard boxes, made in Hicksville, NY and quite consistently good quality.
@@gabrieln3613 Yeah Marine band is excellent. Also expensive. When I said 'not coming out of the box in great tune' in regard to Hot Metal (also a Hohner product) I got it a little wrong. Meant to say that sometimes you get one where certain reeds are a little hard to get any sound out of. Other than that though, once you get them working the sound is really good. Cheaper to buy, but sometimes you gotta be blue collar. Somebody should write a song about how some blue collar people can fix things which rich people can't even understand. Maybe even as a country song since country people do that all the time. Hope you are doing well with your harp playing. I'm not much good myself but enjoy playing at home anyways. prospective wife: 'I'm sure you could do well at pretty much anything you turn your hand to.' me: 'Yeah well, that may be true , but I'm not much good myself. @@jquery2774 If you get a reed sticking, sometimes a tiny adjustment up or down can fix that, it's usually because it's touching on one side or a little bit too flush with the read plate. They are good videos on TH-cam about adjusting your reeds, A tiny little adjustment can make a difference. For inexpensive owner that are good and reliable I like the "Big River".
@@gabrieln3613 Just like to say Thanks to the people who responded. It's an F harp playing in C. If you get a decent Hot Metal harp in the key of F you will have a great time playing this song. Haven't had one for years. Hot Metal has a bad rep that way, but if you get a good one you can go all the way back to the sixties. In some way. I ain't a great harp player in any way, all I can say is that if you can find a decent harp in the key of F you can find joy in playing this song. There was nobody like Butterfield.
Do wish that we had a better venue than TH-cam. For everything. Best answer is to download it and play it at home. We are kinda stuck with them. I kinda like to say whatever I feel like saying but that is not possible here. Great song by the way. Damn, I wish I had a decent harp to play along with this song.

One of the best harp players, for sure the best white harp player.
Amen.
Written by the great Blind Willie Johnson.
There are too many people out there that think Jimmy Page wrote this song. They don't know their blues history.
Blind willie johnson also didn't write this song it was a gospel called jesus make my dying bed way before the 30s
Paul makes the difference in harp playing. Big Walter is my favourite. Got lessons from Walter in '75.
Walter died in 68.

only charlie musslewhite came close, but different styles
James Cotton was closer, in my opinion.
