Bookoff - An Old School Record Store Experience

  • Join me for one of my New Music Finds shopping excursions at my local record store. Bookoff is not your typical record store. It’s buried in the back of a combination book/electronics/gaming store in Midtown Manhattan. But it’s worth the visit as you will see and is one of the last record stores in NYC. While CD’s are dwindling and being eliminated from other stores, Bookoff is going strong with the biggest selection in all of NYC. If you’re in the Manhattan make sure you check them out for that old school record store experience.

    Holy smokes -- CD honey hole! I could spend a ton of time and $$$ in that joint. Still wish you would do an intro (giving a little background on the shop, how long you've been going there, etc.) and a post-visit review of your purchase.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The background on the shop is written in the description. This was a brand new music store find for me. And the purchase are always covered each Wednesday during episodes of New Music Finds.

    • @jaredl.8465
      @jaredl.8465 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brendon -- Guess I don't usually look at descriptions unless I'm directed there. I just think if you did an intro (from your apt.) basically saying what you wrote in the description -- that'd be perfect. And for the post-visit, you could hold up the stack of CDs and say something like, "I found 12 CDs at [fill in store name] today. Tune into my next new music finds video on Wed. where I'll recap this purchase, plus other music I picked up during the week." Could help drive viewers to more of your videos. Just a thought...

    • @BrendonSnyder

      Yeah unfortunately they close at 8pm. But that’s actually open late for a music store here in NYC. I was surprised they were open that late regularly. Definitely when you return, stop by and make sure to save a lot of time for going through it all.

    Good ole Bookoff. I remember the Bookoff and Hardoff stores from when I was stationed in Japan. In Japan however, it was difficult for me to find what I was looking for without help because all of the artist names and titles were in kanji. After some time I was able to recognize the kanji for bands like KISS and Alice Cooper etc. I loved living in Japan. The people, the culture are just wonderful.

    The store doesn't make sense often. They'll have a sealed new copy of a CD for $1.50 and , on the opposite shelf, a scratched, beat up copy for $10. Much of the stock will never sell at any price. But it's worth an occasional visit. The used records are also strangely priced. Most will be trashed, I think. They did away with categories like country and oldies recently and just put everybody in alphabetical order, although the jazz, classical, and Christmas music is separate. The used records were just moved recently to those shelves at the end of the video. They had been in boxes near the front of the CD aisle.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that as well but I think it has to do with when the CD came into the store. Some of these are worth more than they are marked and others are worth less. I do my homework before buying to know what the relative cost of something should be and if the album is still in print or not. It helps be decide if I want to buy an album or not.
