As a nine year old just by looking at them I can see these characters are living people with a whole world and story. Sometimes images get the point across better than words.

"Really its left up to the imagination of the kid to decide what they should do with it" Honestly I think thats why Bionicle was my favorite toy franchise... ever. See bionicles did something that not a lot of toys did, it gave you more than just a character it gave you a place, Mata Nui and all subsequent locations were absolutely magical for me as a kid and the fact that you didn't have to know the entire overarching story to make your own narratives was a huge bonus. Some of my fondest memories were assembling a new villainous monstrosity in my basement for the Toa heroes to battle while providing my own cringe dialogue and world stakes but at the same time they had so much LORE behind the damn thing that if losing yourself in an alternate universe was your thing as a kid you could do that as well. No matter what kind of kid you were, a builder, storyteller, or roleplayer you could enjoy Bionicles because at the end of the day its just cool robot warriors with elemental powers fighting each other.

  • @ThreeProphets
    @ThreeProphets 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

Bionicle's story was mostly told through 29 novels, but Farshtey usually needed an extra week or two after the release of the new toy line to finish the first novel in that arc, so the ads actually gave us clues about the story before the books came out. The two best examples are the introduction of the Toa Inika because we already knew most of the characters, with Jaller playing a pivotal role at the end of the Chronicles arc, so it was suddenly revealed that Jaller is a Toa now, but not how. The other one was a line-for-line recreation of a scene from Downfall, cutting off just before the twist. This was a direct preview of a really awesome scene that left us hungry for more. We went out of our way to look for these ads online, rather than turning the sound off like we would for cable TV

Piraka Rap is so weird... but its just been embraced by the BIONICLE community as its own weird thing. But my favorite commercial to this day is the Toa Ignika and the Barraki with "Move Along" and "Creeping in my Soul" soundtracks respectfully.
You said they didn't need to rely so much on the story aspect in the later commercials but personally I think its part of BIONICLE's downfall as it no longer differentiated itself to the new kids. BIONICLE Gen 2 commercials were the worst as they directly made BIONICLE a TOY... not a story (tho it did have a good soundtrack in the background)

A franchise I would like to get covered, if you are interested, is the "Invizimals" series:
It was a series of videogames developed by a Spanish company called Novarama, and you might have not heard of the series because from what I know, it was either distributed, or only successful in Europe. The series had 5 main titles (3 on the PSP, 2 on the PSVita) and a few other side titles.
It was basically like Pokemon, though it played a lot with the "virtual reality" gimmick, which was mimicked by the system's camera, allowing the game to interact with the environment to an extent, like the various colors, sound, your hands, etcetera. Additionally, the games were very story-focused rather than only focusing on the adventure side.

This is brilliant! A quite condensed but also quite insightful look at *why* the adverts worked... with one exception. You mentioned the music, but I think you sort of undersell just how effective the music is at *capturing* attention in the first place, and then holding it.
One of the best examples of this is the Barraki movie, which also happens to be the second-best commercial ever made, hands down (the best would come out later that year). I had typed out a big rambly explanation of why it works, but it's so well-done that I think the best way to *get* it is to just go and watch it again. The music absolutely defines the entire thing for me, and the advertisement is so clearly built around it too. It's the same for the cyberpunky Vahki flash animations and their audibly 2000s synth, and even the same for the Piraka commercials, setting the exact tone of that ad campaign, even the gangsta interpretation is my least favourite of the bunch. Still better than Turtle Power. Marginally.
The point is that the music is a huge part of what gets humans to pay attention, and I feel like you could have gone into it more. Then agai, maybe just saying that it's awesome is enough. That's pretty much exactly *why* it works, and clearly I *get* why that's important because, well, music. It's music. That's what it does. *shrug*
Speaking of sound design, your voice is *fantastic.* This is the first video I've ever seen of yours and I sort of want a t-shirt. The fact that you're clearly a rockstar vampire from tv helps.
P.S. I think another thing that made me really like Bionicle is that it wasn't pretentious. It was honestly presenting a story without telling me I should find it cool just because loud Americans were being super rad/adorable at it. No offence to any loud Americans reading this, but it *really* makes a difference to have the focus group guys shut up and just let the story breathe. I never bought a thing because some actors told me it was cool. I bought a thing because I was *shown* it was cool. I feel like I've arrived at your point in this footnote, oops.

Bionicle was an amazing, and probably unintentional, event in toy history. The series made sure that bits of story and lore were everywhere, the commercials, the product descriptions, the website, the games, and the movies. It was hard not to get bits of lore when the franchise was running. That said, Dungeons and Dragons tried to do something similar back in the 80s and early 90s, with the Dungeons and Dragons television show and harder pushes on selling the miniatures along with the game itself, but since you couldn't find any figures of the main cast outside of some European countries it showed they really didn't understand how to market what they were selling all that well, combined with the incredibly short run of the animated series and you have something that sounded interesting on paper what was pushed into failure by network executives. Dino-Riders, also from the 80s, tried to make things interesting by telling a story with a cartoon and have basic 1980s toy commercials, the show was...lacking in its ability to keep attention and interest, but the toy commercials were ironically more engaging the show that was built around them.

Fun fact, there was supposed to be an actual Piraka commercial showing the toys and their functionality, but due to too many design changes and not even having a final design (despite the commercial release a month prior to the toys) they ended up rushing the entire Piraka toyline out before it could be finalized.

A thing I loved about the commercials was that it basically set up the conflict for the year and let you turn on your heel and go any which way you liked when playing with the toys. You could go see what offically happened with the comics and novels, or you could make your own story with the action figures while playing with them. With the 2007 waves, you pretty much knew the conflict of the year from 2 commercials. Both sides are in a mad dash trying to get the mask of life. One side are our heroes from last year, now upgraded to be able to fight underwater, and the other are warlords that were banished into the depths of the sea. From there you can get the offical story, or you can make up your own. Really cool stuff.

I remember when I was in middle school and all the boys in my class know the move along song but none of use knew where that song came from of what it was, we just knew the tune and some of the words.
Then one day I discovered the Bionicle commercial on TH-cam and I suddenly realized is was where that song came from. Al the memories of that commercial came flooding back. Then showed it to all the boys (and one girl) and we all remembered this commercial as the origin of this epic song. None of use even played Bionicles, the theme had just ended and we were all too young when it originally came out.
But even though we were too young when the commercial originally came out, none of us ever forgot that amazing commercial, it's a testament to how amazing the marketing was for Bionicle. It's never forget that song, the commercial, or my rediscovery of the commercial, it was one of the best feelings I've ever had in my life!

It featured the piraka in a top-down bullet hell shoot 'em up type of game.
It was challenging and fun. We competed against each other in school, trying to be better than the others at the game and taking turns playing it to demonstrate our skills and show off.
There were also power ups to collect, which modified the bullet weapon of the player's piraka.
