    Step 1) Ignore real problems which everyday people bring to your attention for decades.
    Step 2) Dismiss parties which form to address real but ignored problems, and demonize their voters.
    Step 3) Get alarmed when voters abandon you in favor of the other people.
    Step 4) Call the other side fascists and totalitarians, and then ban them from political participation.

      You are right about 'step 1', but you are wrong, that the AfD really addresses these problems. They don't have a solution for most of these problems as well. They just claim that they are the solution and that's it.

      West Germany banned a number of parties, both left and right, that broke no laws during the Cold War. They do have that right; they’re not a democracy, they’re a liberal regime.

    When the masks peel off you realise that the talk about democracy and it's importance is mere pretense. As soon as democracy delivers unfavorable results, the calls to do away with democracy are deafening.
    You often here of lack democracy in Iran Venezuela etc. But it is those who shout the most about democracy who are the first to point out it's inconvenience.
    Note that DW does not take a stance on whether it would be a good thing or not. What they are doing is testing an idea on the public to see how the public would react. Surely if the channel values democracy, they should be pointing out how undemocratic that act would be.

    Banning usually only works on fringe parties because banning such a popular and well-established party would have devastating effects on voter confidence. It might actually weaken the democratic institutions more than having a government involving the AfD. Being in a government requires a party to deliver political promises to voters, so there is actual risk for the AfD to lose votes as a result of bad governing.

    Democracy in the west is also un pure.
    You can ban a party because they want to lower immigration numbers or banned immigration from poor countries etc.
    Europe is not that rich as to be able to spend loads of monies on immigrants rather than the locals.
