European elections: Coexistence and immigration at the centre of Sweden public debate • FRANCE 24

  • In Sweden, one of the major issues at stake in the European elections is the question of coexistence. Since the 1960s, the country had been a land of welcome for people fleeing their homelands. But everything changed with the arrival of a centre-right government in 2023. Today, most political parties are calling for less immigration and a rethink of the integration model. FRANCE 24's team on the ground reports from the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby, where 80% of residents are first or second generation immigrants.

Never before in human history has so many countries been as developed as right now. We are at the peak of global equality in terms of access to medicine, technology and economic advancement. So why are more people from so many more countries demanding “asylum” and “refuge” now? Look at Cabrini Green in Chicago - now a demolished public housing project because of excessive crime in Northern Chicago, and other urban renewal projects intended to bring the poor closer to the wealthier neighborhoods for better jobs and schools - All failed because the more affluent residents shifted to private schools and/or moved to get away from increased crime. Social engineering theory is just theory and has never worked as intended and yes the bridge would have caused an upsurge in crime in the affluent areas.
