This time on Scarfulhu, we look into the Bionicles of my past. The MOCs I created as a kid and uploaded to Brickshelf/BZPower. This includes all the bad ones, and the not so bad ones. I know people are excited about Bionicle 3 Web of Shadows, but this idea has been floating around in my head for a long time. I actually recorded my voiceover at the beginning of the year. The script having been written over a year ago. Either way, I'm glad to share these Bionicle creations with you and I hope you like these Bionicles.

The "official" term in the community is 'Self-MOC' - They used to be a huge deal to people but have become more of a novelty, rather than a cornerstone of ones online identity, as the fans have matured (all the kids who played with Bionicle when it first came out are in their mid-twenties now)
They were usually Toa (because of course they were *eye roll*) but some were just random, vaguely humanoid, characters,
it was a lot of fun creating them, seeing how your favourite MOCists wanted to portray themselves, in Bionicle form, and how that portrayal evolved, as they aged, got more pieces, learnt more sophisticated and experimental building techniques, etc.etc.
Revamping your Self-MOC or replacing it with an entirely new one, was quite common :)

My favourite aspect of self-MOCs is how they can evolve with the builder to reflect their own changes and development over time. I've been updating mine since 2011 and it probably doesn't have a single piece in common with the original.

It doesn't make you any less of a MOCer than other people who make 'normal' MOCs.
Don't forget the hips tho, they're arguably more important.

It’s honestly a shame self-mocs fell out of style. Back in the day mocists were constantly updating their self mocs so they could stay the center pieces of their collections. Looking through someone’s self moc would usually show you all of the major building milestones they hit over the years and that was something pretty special.

Man, memories. I used to have a Bionicle character (or Toa-Sona if we're calling it that) as a kid myself. i don't think i ever named him, but I remember he had a mostly red body with a scorpion looking head (with mendable mandibles), a claw hand, and a fire sword (aka, just a fire piece I attached to his other hand). I guess I'll go with the first thing that comes to mind, and call him "Toa-Scire". I probably would've given him a name if I didn't get so infatuated with Beyblade just a while after, which is still a pass time of mine. I just wish the Metal series was still in stores/available offline, but that's another story.

I used to always try and find a way to make serpent-like or snake-like Bionicle monsters. I was really obsessed with stringy things when I was little, to the point where half of the fun of presents was the string it was tied in.
It is always fun to look at really old stuff one used to do. I remember back in the day, I used to do alot of comedy-stuff with my friends. We did a dumb "radio-show", we made dumb parody movies, we did some dumb let's plays and it was all just complete idiocy and us just bumbling around. There isn't much in the way of pride I can have in any of that, but hey. It's the kind of ridiculous shit that you can look back at and laugh at yourself over and I'm glad that we did any of it in the first place. It's unfortunate that the camera we owned to record the movies in particular recorded in this really weird tape-format, so it's not exactly possible to render them anymore, but that's why I do my best to try and keep the memory alive.

ok as a Bionicle Fan and Mocist I do really like How G1 these Mocs are. and in a world where people are using G2 Parts and CCBS a lot more, it's fun to see what it was like back then when G1 was still a thing. (also it's a Self-Moc. not a Toa-Sona)

I only ever made 1 custom Bionicle as a kid and it was essentially just a chest piece with 4 Technic beams attached to the back for arms and legs and a tiny head that rocked back and forth. It looked really goofy and I wish I had a picture of it because it was really funny to look at.

It's always super charming to see people look back on their old art and provide wholesome commentary like this tbh. This reminds me that some of my oldest art that I could find was Mask of Light fan art, I had no ability to draw the robot parts so I just... didn't. I ended up with some vaguely Bionicle-looking characters that also looked kinda cute lmao

I'll admit I'm probably a little too old for the Bionicle range of Lego (as fascinating as I do find it), but I agree with the sentiment at the end; I'll be the first person to poke fun at the dumb stuff I made when I was a kid and teenager before anyone else (I mean, I was 16/17 in 2006 and there's stuff both on my harddrive and online from back then that I now go "what was I thinking") but at the same time, I do hold some odd nostalgia for those silly things and they made me who I am now. And like you said, I wouldn't change that for anything.

I loved making Bionicle MOCs, I think my favourite and most proud one was a silver Rahkshi (spine piece from the Takanuva bike set, head from Roodaha's breastplate and silver Toa Metru feet). There was just something so cool about an all metal Rahkshi to me like it was the prime or an artificial creature. Really cool to see all your MOCs, you did some great, intricate designs on the torsos. Very cute video ^W^ Great to see more Bionicle nostalgia with people

Think the only thing I ever did in terms of "modifying" my Bionicle was stealing the arms of my sister's one to replace the legs of my one. I can best describe it as a 4-armed floaty red menace.

I'd say the biggest problem with the Nuva masks is that they're a bit... melty looking. They don't have the sharper edges that their fore-runners and later relatives would, but with the whole mechanical theme of the rest it doesn't mesh well. Also that Krata-head thing is really clever, never seen anything like it before, nice work!

I once made a massive build myself that was probably as tall as the Makuta figure if not taller, using pieces from a massive selection of bionicle I had saved up for 5 years or so, and it had 3 heads, one was the Krika head, another was the Kikanalo head and the last was some silver fish guys head, a thruster pack using two of Tahu’s swords, six wings from many of the Makuta spices, long legs that had to be reinforced to just stand up with a piece that could take those long pieces that you put in between Rahkshi hands and something that they could slide in to stabilize it completely, it had two of those long pieces with Rahkshi weapons on the back and front and I think some kind of cannon in the left hand. Unfortunately I don’t have it anymore since my mom forced me to give away all my bionicle stuff even though it was all tucked away in a single chest and I have no idea where it is or if it’s even intact anymore.

Hey, I remeber you from the reviews of the first two films! I don't know if you already responded to a similar question but what about the other movies? Why not make a review about web of shadows, at least to complete the trilogy?
Charming video by the way, I love seeing old mocs from fans, it's so nostalgic
