the kellan lore is that he is oko’s son of a human mother, so he’s half faerie, half human. that’s why there’s no other faeries in the set, he’s from eldraine. it’s also why he has an adventure in a set that is not from eldraine.
Kellan is also the focus of the current MTG storyline he is on a journey to find his dad Oko throughout the multiverse. So he is going to most likely be in every standard legal set going forward until at least the Cowboy plane set because Oko is in the promotional art there.
There’s also a 2 mana tormenting voice on an artifact etb in this set that would work really well with Trash for Treasure. Forget the name but it’s in there
Unless I'm missing something, Matzalantli won't work as anti-blood moon tech, because after it flips it becomes a land which would turn into a mountain.
Inti exiles cards WHENEVER you discard a card in ANY way! not just from attacking. So every type loot, cycling etc. gives you an extra card! That part seems very important, strong and often overlooked.
Sunken Citadel also pays 2 towards Castle Garenbrig, which if you’re in a titan shell anyways could potentially help one hit the field with only 4 lands
Kitesail Larcenist's effects are in fact not asymmetrical. Which gives it some added utility or at least dimension so I thought it is worth pointing out. Thanks for the content! Love your work!
These are both brews from Historic and Pioneer, so I highly doubt there's anything substantial to them in Modern, but Modern has a very large amount of tools for all these shells so I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on: (I'm probably overestimating the amount of tools that Modern provides for these, but I think it's something cool to check out at least, and you know the format and the options better than I ever could 1. One-Turn kill from casting Geological Appraiser: Cascade that isn't tied to casting can do some wild things, specifically Geological Appraiser, Carnosaur, and Quintorius Kand. A big idea I've been trying to make work for pioneer is turn 4 Appraiser into guaranteed hitting Eldritch evolution, tutoring Carnosaur, then the ETB cascades into either clone effects (copying the dino) or more appraisers/eldritch evolutions, to end off with a haste giver for a one card kill. Modern makes the manabase so much better and there's a lot more options in terms of interaction so it makes me think there's potential there. Playing it feels a lot like Mississippi River from Legacy in terms of needing to roll into a critical mass of threats to be able to win but being able to win off 1 card. If you immediately hit eldritch evo off your first Carnosaur you can also just tutor up Atraxa and try again next turn instead of effectively "wasting" a Carnosaur sacrificing it to get another one 2. Deterministic Neoform combo line from only casting Appraiser might be possible? Use Appraiser to hit either Eldritch Evo or Neoform, which turns into the Carnosaur or a 1-of Goblin Dark-Dweller(1-of so you don't hit it off Carnosaur and brick) respectfully to flashback neoform for a guaranteed Dinosaur, and then the loop should eventually hit Kiki-Jiki(as long as Carnosaur cascades into more creatures and doesn't only hit Neoform/Evo, but at that point I think you can cut your losses, tutor Atraxa, and try again next turn). Kiki-Jiki still lets you keep looping because you can copy Carnosaur since it's an ETB, and then through that all you eventually neoform into zealous conscripts or something else to win immediately. 3. (100% not for modern, just interesting)Completely outclassed by Amulet builds(and also because Mystic Sanctuary isn't legal in Modern), but Spelunking as Pioneer+Historic's first amulet-esque effect can also uniquely enable Mystic Sanctuary(since it's not about the islands, just entering untapped), letting you perform some pretty disgusting loops with Scapeshift and Splendid Reclamation, eventually resulting in a deterministic kill with either a Canopy land(Historic) or something else Pioneer has to draw the splendid rec, Lotus field to make the mana and also get your mystic sanctuary into the yard every time, and Sunscorched desert as the kill. There's a bunch of lines me and other people have been working on for a while, particularly with Beseech the mirror and artifact lands, resulting in deterministic kills from 5 lands + Spelunking as well as from higher with less using Scapeshift, Inventor's fair, and Wishclaw Talisman(only historic legal and not pioneer however). It also has a really good home in Gates, being probably the accelerant gates needed to be truly top tier. Again this one is pretty much "Amulet Titan at home" and I don't expect it to do anything in Modern, especially since Spelunking turns OFF amulet of vigor 4. Bit of a joke deck but you can use Quintorius Kand to cascade deterministically into 4 mana "copy target permanent" spells and have a one card kill that way, including Spark Double which makes a nonlegendary copy so the drains stack. You can also play Carnosaur as copies 5-8 of Quintorius(since if you hit a clone you can also just keep going, there's the possibility of not having enough drain because you used too many clones but like 7 7/6 tramples isn't the worst), but that takes you off Fury and Solitude at 5 mana
unfortunately the big door does not play well against blood moon. if blood moon is in play, this is a 3 mana artifact that loots once per turn and you can activate it to get a mountain.
Am I wrong or does Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant seem like a card Spike would brew with. T1: cookbook pitching dino. T2: Goryos Vengeance on the dino, cheat on Emrakrul, Atraxa, etc.
Goblin tomb raider.. would you ever play it in the dragon rage channeler style burn deck with goblin grenade.. because you would have goblin guild too? With mishra's bubble to activate the tomb raider? Probably just reaching with that idea..
What do you think of Thousand Moons Smithy? That card seems bonkers. I put together a selesnya mid-range list that runs it and I think smithy is just a wild top end in it and can just win the game by itself.
The printing of the ring has made the concept of gaining slow incremental value from a 4+ mana planeswalkers, irrelevant. Why would you spend so much mana on a permanent that only gains you +1 in card advantage per turn and dies to creature damage, when you can play an indestructible ring that draws you 6 cards over the course of 3 turns.

Wotc has been improving their card design a lot over the past few years, definitely welcome to see.
don’t jinx it bro
Am I mistaken that Magmatic Galleon should only create 1 treasure token regardless of the amount of excess damage that was dealt?
Yes, only 1 tresure no matter how much extra damage.
I thought it was equal to excess at first, just making 1 is so bad now
I just spent an hour of my free time watching a power-point presentation, this clearly says something... about something
Unless I'm missing something, Matzalantli won't work as anti-blood moon tech, because after it flips it becomes a land which would turn into a mountain.
Genuinely love the format and quality of these new set review videos. They are always such a treat, thank you Spike!
Inti exiles cards WHENEVER you discard a card in ANY way! not just from attacking. So every type loot, cycling etc. gives you an extra card!

These are my favorite videos. Thanks for putting the effort into making these videos for every set release
I really look forward to these for every new set!
This is by far my favourite style of content from you.
YES I was waiting for this, best part of any new set!
Same here!
Sunken Citadel also pays 2 towards Castle Garenbrig, which if you’re in a titan shell anyways could potentially help one hit the field with only 4 lands
I love these vids, even if I stoped watching modern a year and half ago these are such fun imformative videos.
It's him, your friend Aspiring Spike!
You nailed the pronunciation of Cenote, good job.
Most people won't say it right. Glad to see spike has it down
NO MENTION OF MILLENAL CALENDAR!!!!! The perfect wincon for the 8 Key-dicefactory-scepter turn
Kitesail Larcenist's effects are in fact not asymmetrical. Which gives it some added utility or at least dimension so I thought it is worth pointing out. Thanks for the content! Love your work!
Honestly I wouldn’t mind these videos being 3hrs long and you go deeper into the cards and slap some sample deck lists together. Great content!
two sunken citadels to activate castle garenbrig is a T3 primeval titan off of just lands
Oh baby he's cookin'
quintorius -> bloodbraid elf -> shardless agent -> up the beanstalk

Nevermind I misread your comment, you're still talking of casting the first one, and then any others are from discover not neoform/clones
Was waiting for this and seeing it be an hour long makes my day. Keep it up
Love the info, thanks Spike!
I always giggle when someone says "... but i digress." I pictured spike with a monocle and a top hat for a sec
Love this series! Awesome work as always
unfortunately the big door does not play well against blood moon. if blood moon is in play, this is a 3 mana artifact that loots once per turn and you can activate it to get a mountain.
Sunken Citadel will also work with Nykthos or Coffers (albeit without Urborg it's not worth it).
Really turns the filter lands into filters, too.
I love your presentation
Kellan is Oko's son, so that's why he is a Human and a Faerie
Kand looks rly solid in the calibrated blast deck
Thousand Moons Smithy!!!!!!!!
More pioneer than modern card but I am still gonna have fun at fnm with it
Any thoughts on The Millennium
Calendar being potentially playable or a possible otk for it?
31:19 kellan was a human faerie in WOE too [Oko's kid]
PowerPoint babyyyy !
Stalker is a rogue that cares about your yard. Poggies
Am I wrong or does Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant seem like a card Spike would brew with. T1: cookbook pitching dino. T2: Goryos Vengeance on the dino, cheat on Emrakrul, Atraxa, etc.

Could be a thing for more artifact oriented burn decks, like 8* Blast
Kellan is the son oko , he is form Wilde of Eldaine ( boros version)
Hey spike. What do U think about " Zoyowas Justice" ?? :) I think its quite interesting
Sunken Citadel also enables a faster Castle Garenbrig
What do you think of Thousand Moons Smithy? That card seems bonkers. I put together a selesnya mid-range list that runs it and I think smithy is just a wild top end in it and can just win the game by itself.
Does Greasefang want a copy of Magmatic Galleon?
Spike, I feel like you'll soon begin to play commander in modern
I LOVE THESE VIDEOS
Sunken Citadel with filter lands (cascade bluffs and such) is free mana
another banger
Kellan is Oko’s son with a human women
Is Ghalta + Mavren included in your bad vampires list?
Rackdos goblin burn let's goooo
Kellan is from Eldraine. His pops is literally Oko
my top card for modern is probably stalker, i think its amazing, can easly be a 3/3 turn three and is also removal? sign me up!
No love for Spelunking?
Love the content! But the backgrounds were quite distracting
Grapeshot with ojer?
Isn’t grief modern’s first good 1 mama black creature? ;)
The enigma jewel could generate normal mana with chromatic sphere and the like.
Sunken Citadel... activate Coffers? :)
I like Coffers :P
Cabal therapist is also a good one mana black creature in my opinion…also ravenous squirrel 😂
Now if cabal therapist saw any actual play... Or the squirrel. I like the squirrel, at least, but I have not seen it outside of historic.
ancient one with death shadow using dress down and flings
you can technically otk with quintorius in pioneer
Akal Pakal might have tension with Steelseeker
Are you gonna do a "winners&losers from WOE"?
I've got my fingers crossed that the reliquary leads to a new fiddlebender brew... maybe with cauldron??? plz
Inti is a human that puts +1/1 counters and discards cards for cauldron humans
Anim Pakal is definitely not the best for humans, but it might have promise in the hypothetical good winota dwck
Ojer seems interesting with goblin bombardment
And mayhem devil
Am i wrong or does Magmatic Galleon always create 1 Treasures max?
hidden nursery is sorcery speed, is that a problem?
Idk if it's relevant but the Mycotyrant dies easily to Merfolk Trickster and Tishana's Tidebinder.
The only other generic good black one drop I can think of is night of the ebon legion
I had a standard Pirate deck built around Buccaneers Bravado which could win turn 3 with my 1cmc 2/2 Pirate, Tillonalli’s Crown, and a turn 3 Bravado.
Wooooo
Stalactite Stalker + Goblin Blast Runner = The worst aggro deck I want to register
wail of the forgotten in dredge is easy include
Video says 15k views and 49k likes…. Huh. TH-cam?
1 hour????
spelunking discussion ? :(

Overall this set is extremely weak for Modern. Nothing notable here that’s going to change anything. Minor upgrades at best. Very disappointing.
