  • Gardener Naomi Vinbury describes the Victoria Gardens pollinator corridor, an urban habitat restoration project that she designed and installed in Oakland California. She enrolled neighbors and worked with a native plant nursery to provide plants native to the region.

Beautiful work. This needs to be done EVERYWHERE.

This is a wonderful model of how urban dwellers can give our local native plants and pollinators a boost! Bravo to Naomi, the neighbors, and Angela, the sponsor of this great pollinator corridor! I wish every school in California would do this type of planting! Our local middle school planted a few native shrubs, which is a start!

Thanks for posting this as a separate video. I watched it in the five hour video that was posted earlier and it was a highlight. The information on butterfly plants was invaluable since I am working on a quarter acre native plant restoration project in Sausalito. I think the decision to pre-record the videos really cranked up their already high-quality this year, and I am grateful for all the time and effort the individual conteibutors put into them. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

Thank you for your note, and the compliments! The first year of the pandemic we had little time to prepare, and used Zoom. For 2021 and this year, 2022, we used pre-recorded video. That provides the clarity we needed, and the Q and A sessions provide the immediacy that makes these presentations especially interesting. For plant suggestions for your restoration project I suggest you watch the Doug Tallamy videos on this channel from 2020 and 2021, and then look at this web page: www.bringingbackthenatives.net/douglas-tallamy-resources, particularly the lists of plants assessed by Doug Tallamy for their value to wildlife. Thank you for noticing the spiders and allowing for them. It's important not to over mulch, esp with processed redwood chips.

Thank you so much for sharing! This is incredible. Do you know if anyone is doing similar projects in Santa Clara County? Would love to donate space, if possible.

How do you keep the invasive winter weeds from taking over? And gophers?

You can sheet mulch between plants with flexible cardboard, and hand weed. Gophers can be trapped. Plant densely with natives, and after a while they will crowd the weeds out.
