Over here in the British Isles, I have to admit that I had never thought of an African -American presence in Alaska! I was browsing TH-cam and came across a news of a student having her victory in a swimming contest disqualified, because of a ruling about 'appropriate' swimwear. The sportsperson is a young black teen and an Alaskan citizen. Wow! I am somewhat confused why I had always associated Alaska residents with American first-nations and white people. Thank you for posting this programme, it's an epiphany! I have committed myself to delve into Alaskan social diversity and history. I shall not remain uninformed for too much longer. Born in England, I am an Afropean, currently a citizen of the Europen Union member states.
Thank you!! I feel in my soul the call of Alaska. Why? I am from a rural area. I feel in Alaska I can truly be on my own! Even here there was a 26 # acre orchard!! I have this thirst for my OWN 40 acres!!!! I want to do what I want to do! I'm even collecting food now. I'm not depending on anyone but myself! The grid WILL GO DOWN and those of us who are relearning to live off the land will be survivors! I love ice skating, dog sledding, sea plans & boats! I had a White woman tell me about a Native community that would make all of the people who were not native to leave town at sundown. I thought that was horrible BUT now I understand!!! They did not want gentrification! I feel I am in Alaska now. I have no husband, no boyfriend, no children, no mother, no father! Alaska calls!!!! I always loved the movie, "Orca." I also know that a woman can make money in Alaska & come back to the lower 48 & buy a house with CASH!!!
Thank you for sharing this video. I didn't think there were many black people living in this part of the country. It is very much interesting to learn what their day to day lives must be like living there. Do they have the same racial issues? I understand that they have their own towns/cities? Wow. Why would you live so far away from other black people you would wonder. I'd have to assume they came to alaska by way of the military, loved it and decided to stay. Looking at the Alaska State troopers, on the National Geographics channel, I saw a black trooper! Now that was different I thought. Seeing a black trooper led me to search UTube to see how many black's actually does live there. I was surprised to say the least. I'm happy to know that like Visa, black people are everywhere.
grandpa Cal is fresh as hell, but that shit he said about the white boy being sad cuz he 'doesn't have a culture' was lame. if whites feel that way that should show em what they come from.
Everybody has culture. Absolutely. From your state, city, ethnic background or even family. There is no one without culture, and we got to respect them all equally.
I really appreciated this conversation!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for commenting!
