It was painful to see how well my opponent's drew, but it was fun seeing all their decks :) Since I didn't have the fireside chat at the end, I think one or two Egos is reasonable, but four is too much. Dimir is a sad color combo right now, but some matchups require Ego to be competitive, so the card is more important to Dimir now than it has ever been.
I feel like Ego is actually a great underused card; I know that normally removal simply more efficient but it just wipes out a WHOLE GAME PLAN. It can be worth 2-3 Removal spells or counterspells at best.
Says "Unmoored Ego isn't that good", then obliterates his game 2 opponent with no remorse lol. Stripped everything worth a d@*n out of their deck and beats them to death slowly with a 4/4 lmao!!!
I think this video is the first time since I started watching you over a year ago I've spotted and disagreed with your reasoning. At 42:30 you discarded Cavalier instead of absorb forgetting that Cavalier against Narset means they draw 0, put back 2, and then you can exile next turn. Against the rakdos sacrifice you said "this game is too close to risk, scrying Ego to the bottom". Too close implies there's a card the opponent can top-deck that wins them the game, that is EXACTLY the situation you want an Unmoored for, if you remove the threat from their deck they CAN'T top deck it. IF you have successfully answered the board, Unmoored ego is the best card you can draw mid to late game. It's only real weakness is early game when you have to answer a threat already present. It's also deck thinning, making it more likely the opponent will draw a land than a useful card. Of course this is all imo, and I don't have a playset to play around with, but I totally would run 4 in the sideboard for any opponent that isn't aggro. Even then, hitting questing beast or embercleave early would be a game changer.
Elspeth Qonquers Death is a good card. Almost as good as Pharmacist's Eyes. Anyway, love Unmoored Ego. With how prevalent the same handful of decks mostly based on the same broken cards (Steam kiln, oven, etc) are on Arena, it seems a lot more viable than in other contexts. Can get rid of those pesky Escape cards too so I feel like it's got a little bit of a boost in value with Theros.
16:55 You could have enter the god eternals your own token to make it an 8/8 and still gain you the life, though then Rankle lives. You could bounce it with tyrants scorn to buy time. EDIT: Ah, later on you do target your own token this way. Nice. :)

Hey CGB, nice deck! ^_^ I had a pretty nice Esper Unmoored Ego deck back when The Immortal Sun was still a thing in standard. But then, post-rotation I felt like the meta became too fast for it, and I also found that maybe Ashiok 3 was probably a better card for the spot, for 4 reasons: - it usually mills more cards than Ego, it's quite rare to remove a whole playset of 4 cards with it, before at least 1 was already played, or maybe the opponent doesn't have 4 copies in their deck... - it exiles the entire graveyard so no need to worry about escape cards that can be tricky to remove in time with Ego if the opponent is really on an escape/graveyard-focused deck with multiple different escape or reanimation-target cards... - it provides a body on the board to bait some attacks if things go sideways against aggro... - finally there's also Ashiok's passive that can provide a good laugh when the opponent sacrifices a Fabled Passage for nothing... I think that for Unmoored Ego to be better than Ashiok 3, it needs a shell that abuses the fact that it's a sorcery, for example, paired with Mission Briefing, or (better) with Bond of Insight for recursion... What do you think?
I started playing magic around Invasion, when I bought one of those preconstructed decks... It was called Dismissal and it had 1 Lobotomy... I loved that card. Boy Unmoored Ego is BETTER... It's not used very much... but it can break apart so many deck it's delicious...
Back when Unmoored Ego was new, it is utilized as an specific spell removal to remove target threats that an opponent has, now it can also be utilized as a setup for Ashiok Nightmare Muse's Ultimate as you can choose specific spells that an opponent has, and use it against themselves. Unmoored Ego sometimes fails miserably if the opponent has fae of wishes, etc, as they can grab one of the removed cards via Granted, or other cards with the same capability.
I seriously tried to make a deck like this combined with a Ral, Storm Conduit copy combo. Perhaps I was a bit too ambitious but I'm still working on it once in a while lol
I guess unmoored ego is mainly supporting card designed to negate enemy wincondition or most frustrating counterplays rather than exiling opponent's entire deck, otherwise it could be a way to slow, tbh. But your idea is pretty sweet :)
I think part of my planning was realizing Unmoored Ego doesn't limit to non-land cards so I thought, "If I can just target their land base a couple times per cast, maybe I can thin it enough to just stall them out?" haha :D
I had considered making a deck around copying it with thousand year storm and just using wishes to pull them when I needed it. I do really think it can be super broken during some metas. When oko was a think and I played tons of esper I main deck 2 copies since you can almost guarantee 100% what will hit big. You can maybe almost do something similar now as decks of color always pretty much run a couple super key cards. Being able to get rid of them on the board is maybe a different story. Unless you can exile or make them sac the legendary enchantments once they get one out it doesn't really do anything.
I always felt ego was underused or overused. I really love it as a two of, especially in best of 3 in any UB control deck. I love it in control matchups, since it's highly unlikely that a control deck will have multiple different win cons.
On the topic of using Escape cards any time you're not otherwise using your graveyard as a resource, since it's just free real estate, it's also a way to prevent your opponent from using your own graveyard as a resource. Granted there's not a lot of that in the meta right now. A couple of things that could exile for value if you don't exile them first. But, still a nominal benefit.
After watching this, I put together a Cat/Oven/Crumbs shell to stall, including 3x Unmoored Ego. Second game I played, I was up against Jeskai control. Managed to get a turn 5 ego and took 3x Dream Trawler, turn 7 ego followed and got 3x ECD. Have had a few strange games, but when the ego lands, its really funny!
With everyone net decking their decks it is a very powerful card. Imagine right now exiling all ugins before they hit the board? You can name so many things with it! A field of the dead deck? Name field of the dead! Boom deck is garbage now.
Hi Dan, interesting deck to watch. Probably not too build. Interesting to see cards that work to give info in hand versus your knowledge of typical builds and playing to remove toys. Given some time can probably build to similar ideals. Just nice variety in these decks you showcase. 👍❤️. 🦑🐉
I never see this card used. I have 2 decks with this card, and Ashiok's Erasure. The second deck also uses Ixalan's Binding. It's honestly fun stuff. I usually win just from people conceding, but if not I win with the Ashioks/ Kaya. I of course use hand hate cards, and I also use Legion's End (another card I never see), and that card usually works pretty well, often times acting as hand hate on top of dealing with aggro on the battlefield early in a game. Late game, Legion's End isn't as great of a value, but worth it IMO.
Just initial thoughts if you bounced things back to their hand and ego with narset they'll only get one card. Ashiok and discovery/dispersal seem like auto includes if counter magic isn't what this deck wants to do.
Is there a reason why you weren't including Mystic Sanctuary to get back Unmoored Ego or Enter The God Eternals.. you could essentially run two of them to specifically get back one of each... I know you really ran this deck wonderfully but it wouldn't hurt to have one more wincon like New Ashiok nightmare Muse since you are sending so much to exile .. I'm currently building a deck like this for bo3 .. I don't enjoy bo1 at all but don't mind getting ideas from watching your videos since the content is solid. Keep it up man! Thanks
I think a pair of God-Eternal Kefnet for another win con and to copy egos when drawn would be very strong. Would replace the cling to dusts for Kefnet.

If I'm not mistaken, you can target your own token with Enter the God-Eternal. That token will not die to it and will heal you, boosting itself in the process.

It's unfortunate that ixilan and dominara went out so a lot of popular cards featured aren't standard legal anymore :( I'm really just looking for ways to build off of the pre con decks I get while I build up my collection. I played ego before theros as you coud easly name key cards in any competetive deck just after seeing two lands. Whats better than fires without fires or doom fortold without doom fortold. Or gruul without embercleave. And so one, many scoops after turn 3 :) but right know its much harder to hit the right card

I got a of Unmoored Ego for the sideboard for my pioneer mill deck. Some people apparently have Gaea's Blessing in their stupid decks and that don't work with mill. xD At least I ran into it a few times on MtGO.
How janky would it be to run Unmoored Ego alongside a copy spell package? Expansion//Explosion or Ral maybe? These could combo nicely with Deafening Clarion to enhance your control.
my favorite thing about this video is how many times unmoored ego gets to play against the deck type of "Cards That I Own", with one or two of a bunch of cards
11:55 what happens if the opponent takes your zombie army and then you were to make another? Say the opponent didn’t have the oven as a sac engine and the 4/4 token comes back into your control when the akroan war saga leaves. Do you now have two 4/4 zombie army tokens or do they merge into a single 8/8?
Prior to Theros I Mainboarded three in dimir/Esper controls and 80% of the time you could name Nissa and other times you learn their deck off thought erasure to name anything bothersome card.
Ive always viewed it as sideboard material against decks dependent on a single card for crazy sucess like Fires. If its main boarded, do you also need a psychic on the phone....in situations where its not obvious right off the bat what you are looking at.
In the UW matchup you took blue cavalier but I think realistically they are never playing that card when you have Narset out because they would timewalk themselves by two turns right? I think better to take the absorb there and then they have a bad counter, the blue cav which they dont play, and the deputy which they also dont play.
Ive faced an excited Treacherous Blessing top deck, I was down until I realize I have Narset on, their board presence is zero and scoop shortly afterwards.
Wow so at 42:20 Cavalier of Gales was highligted which I assume means the opponent was hovering over it in their hand. I do this all the when I get thought ersured I hover over the card I want to keep, for random reason. Now I know the opponent gets to see which card I want to keep lol won't be doing that anymore
Best way to get to mythic is to only play ranked games when you have daily quest to finish. It is crazy how easy the wins come when I have to complete the quest that the games wants me to finish. Once those quest are completed I move over to non ranked and it has made getting mythic feel like cheating. I love algorithms.
How the hell does the rule logic make it so God Eternal doesn't kill your own 4/4 token? The damage doesn't fully resolve since the spell is still on the stack?
Ok so this is an idea thats been going around in my head for awail and i want to know if you think it will work. I want to build a deck based around agent of treachery, mirror march and yarok. Do you think this idea will work if so how good woukd it be i want to hear you idea on it or how you might build it.
It will work some times. But really mono blue devotion is the same thing with less jank. If you’re goal is to take their whole board in one turn go symic and mass manipulation with nissa out.
So unmoored ego to me is a sideboard piece against combo pieces. A lot of times during pioneer FNM people will try to play a combo against me that just runs 2 cards to win. (Inverter of truth, thassa oracle) (Heliod, walking ballista) Or even in modern with ways to get infinite mana, or dumb synergies. (Although in modern bringing in 3 surgical extractions will do the trick). But what I’m saying is that, unmoored ego main board = pretty bad.. unmoored ego sideboard, to completely rip out combo pieces and win cons to make your opponent scoop their cards up, instantly = not bad
At 15:48, after you had correctly called that they had Claim the Firstborn in their hand, you could have gone for Unmoored Ego instead of Thought Erasure -- Is this why people dis Unmoored Ego? Even in a near-perfect situation for Unmoored Ego, Thought Erasure was better,.
I could have told you unmoored ego was bad before you even started the video. Know what's good though? Extirpate. That card is bonkers, especially in this escape format. And it would even hate out cats/oven combo because of the split second clause.

Unmoored ego destroys the esper and azorious control decks. Most will play teferi turn 3 then you cast Unmoored ego, name dream trawler, and they have no win condition.
CGB, they probably would've Shame scooped when they would've played Gales if you didn't exile it, because of your Narset, Narset doesn't let Gales draw Cards....
Unmoored Ego is the only card in magic that requires a very skilled player to use. in a skilled players hands, this card is a powerful weapon. in a noob's hands, this card might as well be nothing.
Your only wincon is enter the god eternals? So what happens in a control match? They have no creatures so you can't cast your wincon, you ego their dream trawler, and then you both just sit there doing nothing until someone decks? lol

@@toast_recon The beauty of Unmoored Ego is that it conclusively removes a threat from your Opp's deck. Obviously not just one, but ALL of them. You'll note he was talking about and playing around Claim multiple times so one might think getting rid of it altogether is a smart move, even at the cost of giving them another card. That said, it's real easy to criticize plays from the sidelines and it's a lot harder to comment WHILE playing... I just thought it was funny that he had like 8x opportunities to use his Vid's namesake card in game 1 and didn't do it. 😉

Fae of Wishes control deck that can use Bond of Insight makes amazing use of Unmoored Ego to dismantle other control/ramp/combo decks.

37:30 interesting, so when exactly is damage checked for creature death? Is it when a player would receive priority?
State based effects always get checked when a player receives priority, you're right as far as I know.
In this case, ALL effects are resolved before ANY check. I would frame it as the same as when lifelink and combat damage "math is done".

I got a of Unmoored Ego for the sideboard for my pioneer mill deck. Some people apparently have Gaea's Blessing in their stupid decks and that don't work with mill. xD At least I ran into it a few times on MtGO.
How janky would it be to run Unmoored Ego alongside a copy spell package? Expansion//Explosion or Ral maybe? These could combo nicely with Deafening Clarion to enhance your control.

my favorite thing about this video is how many times unmoored ego gets to play against the deck type of "Cards That I Own", with one or two of a bunch of cards

Say the opponent didn’t have the oven as a sac engine and the 4/4 token comes back into your control when the akroan war saga leaves. Do you now have two 4/4 zombie army tokens or do they merge into a single 8/8?
I believe you get the two armies. Just as if you spark doubled the Army. If you amass afterward you choose one of your tokens to recive the counters
The absurd part of it is that it can strip virtually all lands from oppo's deck couple it with agent and you lock out people from playing

Prior to Theros I Mainboarded three in dimir/Esper controls and 80% of the time you could name Nissa and other times you learn their deck off thought erasure to name anything bothersome card.
Ive always viewed it as sideboard material against decks dependent on a single card for crazy sucess like Fires. If its main boarded, do you also need a psychic on the phone....in situations where its not obvious right off the bat what you are looking at.

In the UW matchup you took blue cavalier but I think realistically they are never playing that card when you have Narset out because they would timewalk themselves by two turns right? I think better to take the absorb there and then they have a bad counter, the blue cav which they dont play, and the deputy which they also dont play.

Ive faced an excited Treacherous Blessing top deck, I was down until I realize I have Narset on, their board presence is zero and scoop shortly afterwards.
Ego is good sideboard as 2 of against Combo i think we have seen stuff like this before but at a lower cost which made it better.

Wow so at 42:20 Cavalier of Gales was highligted which I assume means the opponent was hovering over it in their hand. I do this all the when I get thought ersured I hover over the card I want to keep, for random reason. Now I know the opponent gets to see which card I want to keep lol won't be doing that anymore
Best way to get to mythic is to only play ranked games when you have daily quest to finish. It is crazy how easy the wins come when I have to complete the quest that the games wants me to finish. Once those quest are completed I move over to non ranked and it has made getting mythic feel like cheating. I love algorithms.

How the hell does the rule logic make it so God Eternal doesn't kill your own 4/4 token? The damage doesn't fully resolve since the spell is still on the stack?

Ok so this is an idea thats been going around in my head for awail and i want to know if you think it will work. I want to build a deck based around agent of treachery, mirror march and yarok. Do you think this idea will work if so how good woukd it be i want to hear you idea on it or how you might build it.
It will work some times. But really mono blue devotion is the same thing with less jank. If you’re goal is to take their whole board in one turn go symic and mass manipulation with nissa out.
I prefer far of wishes approach, unmoored ego is to me a tool against certain control that rely on bombs and combo decks

So unmoored ego to me is a sideboard piece against combo pieces. A lot of times during pioneer FNM people will try to play a combo against me that just runs 2 cards to win. (Inverter of truth, thassa oracle) (Heliod, walking ballista)
Or even in modern with ways to get infinite mana, or dumb synergies. (Although in modern bringing in 3 surgical extractions will do the trick).
But what I’m saying is that, unmoored ego main board = pretty bad..
unmoored ego sideboard, to completely rip out combo pieces and win cons to make your opponent scoop their cards up, instantly = not bad
At 15:48, after you had correctly called that they had Claim the Firstborn in their hand, you could have gone for Unmoored Ego instead of Thought Erasure -- Is this why people dis Unmoored Ego? Even in a near-perfect situation for Unmoored Ego, Thought Erasure was better,.
An advantage you get with this card is to see all the cards of your opponent's deck.
I feel like this deck wanted to be sultai for assassins trophy and other board interactions

I could have told you unmoored ego was bad before you even started the video. Know what's good though? Extirpate. That card is bonkers, especially in this escape format. And it would even hate out cats/oven combo because of the split second clause.

Unmoored ego destroys the esper and azorious control decks. Most will play teferi turn 3 then you cast Unmoored ego, name dream trawler, and they have no win condition.
CGB, they probably would've Shame scooped when they would've played Gales if you didn't exile it, because of your Narset, Narset doesn't let Gales draw Cards....

Unmoored Ego is the only card in magic that requires a very skilled player to use. in a skilled players hands, this card is a powerful weapon. in a noob's hands, this card might as well be nothing.
Your only wincon is enter the god eternals? So what happens in a control match? They have no creatures so you can't cast your wincon, you ego their dream trawler, and then you both just sit there doing nothing until someone decks? lol

@@toast_recon The beauty of Unmoored Ego is that it conclusively removes a threat from your Opp's deck. Obviously not just one, but ALL of them. You'll note he was talking about and playing around Claim multiple times so one might think getting rid of it altogether is a smart move, even at the cost of giving them another card. That said, it's real easy to criticize plays from the sidelines and it's a lot harder to comment WHILE playing... I just thought it was funny that he had like 8x opportunities to use his Vid's namesake card in game 1 and didn't do it. 😉
