Hi Tessie. I put an add on freecycle for mason jars. I not only got over 50 brand new jars with lids and rings this last weekend, but the person also gave me his almost brand new Presto canner complete with everything for free!!!!!!! He couldn't use the canner on his new stove and had gotten an electric one. He wanted it out of his garage. It does really pay to use the free sites to ask for jars.
@@liberty8424 yes, kind of like marketplace. It is a place where people can unload stuff that they want to get rid of or sell for cheap, and people who are looking for things can place adds. Most areas have a local freecycle community. You just sign up and put your zip code in to find communities close to you.
I gave away tons of jars several years ago when we were cleaning out my mother's stuff. That was before I knew how to can and they fortunately went to a young LDS couple. Live and learn but at least it has a great home.
I've been recanning for years as well. One of my favorite places to check out is the Amish discount grocery store. I found #10 cans of DelMonte apricots for $2.99. (A 303 can was$2.59 at our local grocery store.) I bought 6 of the large cans, and recanned the apricots using the fruit juice that was inside the cans. My mom sometimes gets "institutional" sizes of items in her senior citizen boxes. Last month, she got a 3 gallon bag of Heinz catsup which I brought home and canned.
I usually eat what I can out of the #10 can and then I can the rest. I actually canned refried beans, which is against "recommendations" but we're still eating them with no problems. Take care!
Hi Tessie, I’m new to canning, I truly love it and I’m like a sponge. Your videos have helped me so much with confidence and I feel accomplished. I love how genuine you are. You make us feel like friends. Keep up the great work. We all love watching
It's a lot of work but it will save a lot of money and food prices are going up all the time. I'm starting to food prep and stock up on a lot of things.
Good Morning Tessie, Sisters, Brothers, and Friends :-) Wish you all a wonderful blessed Tuesday filled with Gods Joy and Happiness :-) Remember to pray for one another and for all around the world :-) God Bless You ! Love you all :-) Keep smiling be safe :-)
I only water bath just like 5he amish and my mom did. But ive never recanned. 8 yrs ago i started stocking up on canned goods. Only to discover after 2 yrs they tasted bad and to my misfortune some exploded. None of tgese were dented or expired when purchased. I discovered that the manufacturers have cut corners in there canning. I cant wait to do this. So now my jars will last alot longer. Thank you
I miss the days of a dented can warehouse; # 10 cans of course. Yes it was a while ago but, a dented can without a label was $.10-$.25 each. A dented can ran $.25-$1. At the time, 16 ounce (yes 16 oz, not 13-15 ounces) went on super sale here at $.25/ ea, normally $.30-something to $.50- something for veggies. A number of the dented cans were if more expensive items. I know they sold non-dented cans but we focused on the cheap, dented, no label types. Generally, we used them in cooking or froze.
I started saving all my tomato sauce jars and pickle jars ect. That is what my relatives always use to use for canning and so it's good enough for me. you can continue using them a couple 2 -3 ×'s before you throw them out
Tessie, I thought of you today when I found three oil lamps that were my moms! They were behind some stuff in the garage that I had not gotten too. They are beautiful. I need to find some wicks now. ❤️ I miss my mom and dad.
I ordered my wicks on Amazon. You can also get replacement burners if they aren’t working properly. They even have them for mason jars. I bought some and as I find a canning jar with a Nick or chip on the lip of the jar I convert them to lamps. And the globes I found at Menards store very inexpensive.
I found wick on Walmart website by the roll in different widths and lengths. I just cut what I need to replace shorter worn out wicks. It's much cheaper by the roll as long as you know what width you need. Free shipping too, some of them have shipping added to the price area, but I just get those that ship for free. Many items on Walmart ship free even without having to spend $30. Happy hunting, love those oil lamps. Mine are all glass and when I bought mine they were only $5 but now they're over $20 each...Highway robbery!
Lu's Northern Home I am new to using these lamps, so not sure what you’re r meaning as far as replacement burners. Is that the piece where the wick goes?
Tessie this video is so timely! My daughter works at Red Robin and just brought home six #10 cans of tomato sauce that her manager was throwing out because they were dented! I also have two #10 cans of nacho cheese sauce in the basement pantry that I’ve been intending to re-can. I’m excited!
I've been re-canning about 15 or so years. I used to get stuff at the discount scratch & dent grocery store. My food pantry gave me 2 #10 cans of cheese sauce, I'll be canning that soon. Right now I am finishing up canning the butter I got on sale over the last 6 months.
We have Fleet Farm, which is somehow different but still related. They have not raised their prices on lids and jars. They seem to be in stock everytime I go there. I am stocked up really good now. I love that store.
The leas there is in the freezer the less efficient it is. If you freeze water bottles you have the initial energy use of freezing the water but it will help keep the freezer cold longer so the pump doesn’t run as often.
I canned the ketchup in quarts since the 32 oz heinz ketchup bottle so hence quart fills it exactly. Also have reccaned black olives and peppers I found about all the stuff you did and did it and also used the jars I had used before spaghetti jars etc and it worked.
How did you do the black olives? I just bought a #10 can but I don't know whether it would be waterbath or pressure and how long? Thank you so much for information.

Thanks for sharing Tessie! Such a great idea to recan. Keeping those pantry shelves filled is so important this day and times. Have a blessed day friend
I've seen #10 cans before and while in a line at a new food pantry I went to the first thing offered me was in fact a #10 size can of chili con carne which I took after I picked up my jaw off the floor. I plan on dividing it up myself and freeze it as I'm single and hope it will be ok later when i need it.
My husbands family were some of the first settlers in St. Augustine, Fl. They all love a pepper called Datil pepper. I make Barbecue sauce, mustard, and a hot sauce all with Datil Peppers. I had no idea that you could buy such large bottles of ketchup!!! What a game changer! I will look on line to see if it is still available. Thank you Tessie you are such a blessing to us.
Number 11! DOUBLE #1 Owen! LOL! Great video Tessie! Love the encouragement to recan. Our Walmart is stocking up on jars right now. Have to check for #10 cans of sauce and ketchup!
I never thought of recanning. U could even put in canning jars then refrigerate for a day or two n eat it every day n it wont go bad but its cheaper than gettin several small tin cans
Tessie that's a great idea to re can foods I'll have to look for those big cans in my stores I always wanted to re can food items like sauerkraut that I love to have :-) Nice to see Chevy man and your daughter there :-) I had a nice day out at the beach for a few hours :-) Love you my sister :-) God Bless You and Ken :-)

I have a discount store called Baileys near me in northern Indiana. I’ve been buying their number 10 cans and re-canning them. Huge savings and great way to keep the pantry stocked ❤
I ordered a bunch of lids using your code. Thank you so much for giving us the code. I haven’t had any fail so far. I have been canning the last month and half-canned meat/broths/beans. Better success rate than I had in the past 2 years with “name brand”.
I bought some re-useable lids Tessie for my canning; they are almost like a plastic I am PRAYING they work. I did put something in one and sucked the air out of it and it worked and is still working so lets hope. and Tessie I am going to put up a video tomorrow of driving around my town if you want to see what Alamogordo New Mexico looks like :) make sure you go check it out but won't put up until afternoon/evening . LOVED this video I LOVE to can too.
Recanning is an interesting idea I had never considered or heard of doing before so I was anxious to see your video. After watching, I did the math. Spaghetti sauce at Walmart is just under a dollar for 24 oz. That's 1.25 per quart or 5 dollars for what you paid 3 dollars. Add 4 lids at .33 each (Walmart retail) or let's say you got a good deal and paid .25 each. Your price of 3 dollars for 4 quarts is .75 per quart. Add that quarter for the lid and it's a total of $1.00 per quart compared to $1.25 per quart. Then figure the cost of running the stove on medium for an hour is likely right around 25 cents, plus or minus based on where you live and the type of stove but let's round down and say 20 cents or 5 cents per quart. By the way, from a utilities cost, pressure cooking is far, far, less expensive and safer, considering the risk of illness, than water bath. Total is now $1.05 per quart of recanned spaghetti sauce compared to $1.25 per quart purchased at retail. You spent an hour of your time and canned four quarts of spaghetti sauce to save 80 cents. I'm surprised how many comment that they also recan. If it makes you happy or if your need to save money is such that it makes sense for you to work for a dollar an hour, then absolutely, go for it. It's not something I would do.
I was wondering the same thing… good break down on costs I’ll have to do the same as I’m in Canada However and interesting concept because I never buy the large cans because I only cook for 2
I bought butter at Winco, for $1.47 Tillamook brand just because they were coming up on there best by date, so 6 pounds of butter went in my freezer. I have a number 10 can of tomato sauce, I should do this tomorrow.
Hi Tessie 🙋♀️!! Great tips as always. Your pizza look AMAZING and oh SO YUMMY!! Do love the black too you had on at the end. Take care and God Bless!!! ❤️✝️✝️✝️❤️
Good evening Vernie my friend:-) Tessie always has great tips I actually made that pizza Tessie inspired me from one of her videos :-) Love and Hugs :-)
OK, I do buy some #10 cans, sometimes it is cheaper, but not always. But, my question is why re can the same exact same thing, unless you are ready to use it, and can the leftovers. For me, I would add meat and vegetables, then pressure can it.
This is a great idea Tessie I’ve been stocking up non stop I’ve got between two to three yrs worth now but the #10 cans are very expensive they run around thirteen dollars and up they don’t seem to be going done in price at anytime so right now that’s out of the question for me but when I see other things on sale that we eat I grab it and put it aside thank you for the info we all appreciate it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just got a dehydrator and my first time using it (Sunday) I made some dried plums with some sugar. The package of plums was 2.99 at the grocery outlet. They turned out great and I got a quart plastic baggie of dried plums. :) thanks for these videos, i enjoy them all.
Another great video! Thank you for the ideas. I’d never heard of Blain Farm and Fleet. Thank you. Have you or anyone on here tried their Country Classics lids?
I do not recommend it because it would have to be pressure canned and by the time you would pressure canned it it would become soggy this method is usually only for high acid foods that are water bath canned
Such a great idea Tessie. I am able to buy some large cans of food at a local wholesale store so I’ll have to look to see if there’s pizza or pasta sauce. Thank you for sharing all these great ideas.
I have some keystone meats that were delivered to me in dented cans. I would like any advice you might have on the canning them into glass. I hate to take a chance on them going to waste.
I was not able to grow fresh tomatoes the past two years. Well, we grew them, but the squirrels/deer, etc. ate them. Last summer I found San Marzano peeled tomatoes for under $4 a number 10 can at a Costco in Illinois. Not in Florida. Anyway, when I had run out of my salsa this winter I used those cans and recanned them. It was lovely canning them in the winter. I've been on the search again for bargains in larger cans. Tessie, I don't know how you got those prices. I immediately went to my Walmart online and can't find any number 10 cans. I've scrolled through lots of pages too. I've been up here in Illinois again for a couple of weeks where the grocery stores abound, and I'm sorry to say the prices are inflated. Sigh. I'm hoping I'll be able to get some affordable tomatoes next week when we go back to Florida--and maybe even some from my garden this year. No "tons of money" will be saved by me on this.
The Good Will store's in our area have gotten so expensive. $1.99 on single canning jars. Everything in house wares is higher for used than you can get new. Really sad!
Hi Tessie. I put an add on freecycle for mason jars. I not only got over 50 brand new jars with lids and rings this last weekend, but the person also gave me his almost brand new Presto canner complete with everything for free!!!!!!! I do some re canning did cheese a few months back and mustard last month probally will be doing ketchup and salsa here soon
I’m recanning tommorrow . Nacho cheese and ketchup snd mustard. 😊
Canning the nacho cheese may not be a good idea. It is too dense to heat all the way through.

I just finished adding a big can of tomatoes like those to my ground beef and canned it! Trying to reduce things iny freezer.
Thanks Tessie!
I need to do that too.
Great idea!
The leas there is in the freezer the less efficient it is. If you freeze water bottles you have the initial energy use of freezing the water but it will help keep the freezer cold longer so the pump doesn’t run as often.
I love to can

OK, I do buy some #10 cans, sometimes it is cheaper, but not always. But, my question is why re can the same exact same thing, unless you are ready to use it, and can the leftovers. For me, I would add meat and vegetables, then pressure can it.
This is a great idea Tessie I’ve been stocking up non stop I’ve got between two to three yrs worth now but the #10 cans are very expensive they run around thirteen dollars and up they don’t seem to be going done in price at anytime so right now that’s out of the question for me but when I see other things on sale that we eat I grab it and put it aside thank you for the info we all appreciate it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was just canning kraut . I used all Classico spaghetti sauce jars. And I tried a recycled lid from the Classico and it sealed.
I just got a dehydrator and my first time using it (Sunday) I made some dried plums with some sugar. The package of plums was 2.99 at the grocery outlet. They turned out great and I got a quart plastic baggie of dried plums. :) thanks for these videos, i enjoy them all.
Did they taste better than prunes? Can you explain how you dried them please?
Another great video! Thank you for the ideas. I’d never heard of Blain Farm and Fleet. Thank you. Have you or anyone on here tried their Country Classics lids?
Not yet! Never heard of them !
And advice on rescanning vegetable soup
I do not recommend it because it would have to be pressure canned and by the time you would pressure canned it it would become soggy this method is usually only for high acid foods that are water bath canned
Such a great idea Tessie. I am able to buy some large cans of food at a local wholesale store so I’ll have to look to see if there’s pizza or pasta sauce. Thank you for sharing all these great ideas.
I used to have a set of those plates. 😊
That's a great deal on the ketchup. I don't can. I do enjoy watching you.
Good evening Holly J, I don't can either though I could try some of it I enjoy watching too :-)
@@owen4248 seems like a lot of work. I can't stand long so I pick and choose what I can handle. Good evening Owen hope you are doing well.
I have some keystone meats that were delivered to me in dented cans. I would like any advice you might have on the canning them into glass. I hate to take a chance on them going to waste.
Great ideas!!
Thank you! 😊
Really sad!
