"Today's strokes were not just paddles strokes. Today's strokes were meaningful strokes." It's like when I'm in church, the preacher will say something that just sticks. I can't remember 99% of anything said, but that one thing will stay with me forever. I don't think I'll ever paddle again without those two sentences going through my head. And it will make me a better paddler for having heard it. Thanks for that.
Agree with all the other comments here. May I add that you are one inspiring teacher mate. Your break downs are A+ and I love your calm but fun nature. You just got a new subscriber;)
Thanks a ton SR RX! I appreciate the kind words! Love seeing others progress! So many poured time and effort into me as I was coming up the ranks...it is nice to give back! Glad to have you on board!
Great video @riverkings - great video p4 thanks. I’ve been having this cris of confidence. I’d already started positive strokes, and forgetting edge lol
OMG what fun you all had. I am reminded of my high school graduation yearbook quote "The things I've learn with pleasure I will never forget" (41 years ago) I believe that to this day! Great video
I’m so happy i found your yt channel! I only started my whitewater kayak adventure last year and I constantly search for more instruction movies. Yours are great! Keep on doing it! Hugs from Poland!
Great series! Would you comment/speak about your helmet selections. GREAT tip about tucking head/face! Also, appreciate Mike allowing that recording and bit by bit instructions for us. Great collections.
I'd love to do this river!! I'm afraid I'd be a swimmer 😆.. I'm used to the Current and White River.. It's a pretty lazy river compared to this. Great video!!
Looks like a great river to learn on & sharpen up skills on. I’ve just got into white water and am hooked. We don’t have many tame rivers here so it is trial by fire. Really enjoyed your instructional vids about how not to flip your boat. Good to understand the mechanics of paddling through seams and eddy lines.
Great video, I’m new to kayaking and really informative and fun to watch. Seems like a great bunch and instructor to go out with, that young lad has some style!!
man I love that laugh hahaha. The video's always have a good happy vibe. If I ever make it to the US again I would love to take a lesson or two with you guys.
Awesome video! I don’t know a thing about whitewater kayaking. I was thinking those must be Class IV til you said Class II. Wow! If that’s class II, I’ll stick with flat water. It does look fun though, from my couch. Maybe someday. Enjoyed watching.
Thanks Kelly! It can seem intimidating when you first start. But as you grow into it you learn how to manage the water. Start off easy and give it a try!
What’s wrong with a back stroke? Sometimes do that to slow down before a feature to check it out before powering through it. I’m novice / intermediate so genuine question!
Great question Sam! There is nothing wrong with the backstroke. However, in Mike's situation, he paddled so defensively with backstrokes that he would lose all forward momentum and lose control of the boat as the current from the rear would start pushing his stern one way or the other. He was just unable to maintain some forward momentum to control the boat. Backstrokes will always be a vital tool. Just for Mike, it was the majority of strokes he was taking and causing a lot of trouble for him...hope that makes sense.
As a beginner, 6'3" 250 lbs I too paddle a Flying Squirrel 95. Are you anywhere at all in the recommended weight range? I was looking to get a different boat once I get a solid roll.
Awesome run! I am going to HAVE to get into some of this whitewater. The goat CRACKED me up! I keep telling my wife that I am going to become a millionaire goat farmer. I am going to cross breed screaming goats with fainting goats: they will scream and scare themselves so bad that they faint! Everyone will want one! Okay, maybe not, but they will make some awesome TH-cam videos! LMBO!
Great video series. I'm searching for help with a situation I've encountered a few times now. River bend. I'll do my best to explain. Wide river shallow on right deep on left. River bends right. Very fast deep water flow on the left pushing unto the left river bank. I keep getting slammed into the left river bank. When I try to steer out of it the kayak just turns sideways or try to turn around. I got out of the river recently and took some video I will upload soon
Thanks mobileradiofitter! Sounds like an ineffective ferry issue. Sometimes, in those situations, you need to point your boat to the opposite shoreline and paddle hard...sometimes pointing upstream depending on how hard the current is pushing...If you have video, I could possibly give more insight...
Well, I have the 95. That is 16 gallons larger than my jefe and about a foot longer as well. It is faster, holds a line well and I am getting used to it. I would still prefer my jefe. The extra volume is what I was after for the class 4/5 kayak camping that I intend to do here shortly. The faster boats do well in big water. If water-falling/creeking/low volume stuff etc., the jefe is so forgiving and easy to correct and control. The squirrel comes from boat lineage that is fast and actually once you set the course, it can be hard to change that. Again, exactly what you want in big water, but not in super tight spaces. The jefe is not that fast, so powering through big water holes can be more difficult. It is always a trade off! One thing I do not love about the squirrel are the low chines behind the seat. They lead to a grabby stern in weird water or some high volume side currents. It is something that doesn't do me in, but gives me that not-so-great feeling, then it goes away. I am really used to that already, but wish it was different. Hope that helps! I'll check out that video...
He he he! I didn't start this swim shaming thing! When our group started, an occasional swim would occur during our kayak camping trips. The guys (new kayakers) would beat themselves up over a swim so badly even though I told them it was a part of the fun. It became a thing and has taken on a life of its own. There is no real shame in any of it. Just a fun bit in the videos. The crew nowadays enjoys and most feel it adds to the entertainment. Plus, you only have two choices...roll or swim...
@@RiverKingsKayak Thanks, I'm glad to hear that :-) I was little confused, because you're looks like a professional with lot of skills. Have a great day. Regards Michal
onething I noticed, he his not using body weight, to shift direction with his paddle stroke. You mention something about blemish paddle you got, what company was that, I need a new paddle and would like to save alittle $
I'm sure that can be applied to many of the paddlers in the vid, who in particular are you referring to? As for the paddle, I recently got P5's paddle used. Not really a blem paddle, but rather a demo inventory item. I got it from 4corners riversports in Colorado.
@@RiverKingsKayak One of the instructional kayaking videos I have, said that one should pretend that they are in a vat of molasses; to punch forward with front hand, insert the paddle up to its neck, then unwind your torso as you punch forward with the other hand. He may need to lean by doing, maybe some flatwater racing.
Our first run was about 2 miles and the second about 3 due to using different takeouts. The second run took less than an hour as we were motoring down the river having a great run. The first run took twice as long due to 4 swims and a bigger group. It is hard to put an average on it really. Hope this helps!
Looks like your buddy needs to get rid of that fat ass creek boat and get a river runner with some chime on the edged so he can learn how turn and use those edges instead of a paddling a barg!
