    Great video. It worth checking out if your library has a book club service. This is where they have a catalog of books which you can book out numerous copies. It can limit what is available although my local library had a list of about 200 titles that could be borrowed in this way. Makes book clubs accessible for people with limited budgets x

    I have a book club with three friends and we're celebrating our one year anniversary in July! It's been a blast. We all take turns picking out books to read each month and typically have the reading schedule set at least 6-12 months in advance. We take turns hosting at our houses, potluck style, and plan out themed book club meetings based on the book read. :D We read classics but also a mix of genres and seasonal reads. The Handmaid's Tale was one of the best book club discussions we've had.

    First time starting a book club and I must say I feel a bit out of my element because I wouldn't call myself an avid reader but I'm using it as an opportunity to read some more. Thanks for the tips.

    Love this video, I have always wanted to start a reading group around short stories/novella, because I have never found one that focus's on this genre! There are so many great short stories and options, like Best short stories collections!

    Great guide for book clubs Lauren. I've loved being in book groups, though I'm not in one now, you give great tips and examples. The favourite book as a first meeting is a great idea and has worked for me when I set up a book club in London which is still going on eight years later. We used to have a rota of choice there where people took it in turns to choose which was really interesting. I also loved one book group where we hosted it round our houses depending on who had chosen. It was ace. Love the cake rota idea. Great video.

    Some brilliant ideas. A few of my neighbours and I have formed a book club. We try and meet every 6 weeks. One of the other members and I did the Bookbuddyathon which was great fun. We have had discussions on all different types of genres and diversity and books which are outside out comfort zone. Really enjoying discussing books with like minded individuals:-)

    My tips is to offer cake! I tend to be the baker for the bookclub, oh and we do a pot luck at Christmas!
    I run a bookclub in my hospital library (i'm the librarian) and a poster advertising free cake gets a lot of attention. My bookclub meets on the last Thursday or every month. I use email to keep in contact with everyone when we're voting on the books we want to pick, and then to remind people what we're reading and sending out questions. We tend to pick out about 6-7 months worth of books in advance. I try and pick books to go on our voting list from different genres, but you're right people do tend to vote for the thrillers and crime books, so i restrict the amount of those on the list.

    Loved these tips. Think I may take the plunge and try to put together a book club where I work. I see so many people reading on their lunch break that I'm sure I can get some takers.

    Great video. I have been part in a book club for 2 years. We read a book every 2 months and we meet online . We read different genres every time. We have a short list of books and we vote for one of it. The tip of Rebecca Taylor is very interesting. I'll check out with my library.

    great video, I have been thinking about joining a local bookclub when I finish uni in October so this was really interesting. Also spirulina is a form of algae, very smelly in its powder form but super good for you, I put it in my smoothies for an extra boost xx

    I would love to start a book club! It would have to be something similar to the facebook one as I live in Norway and I think I may struggle with setting up a "real life" one here and trying to read the books in Norwegian!!

    I joined a book club to vary my reading (Penguin supplied the books so we didn't know what we were getting month to month) Read some great books as a result- Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper, Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter for example. Unfortunately, after a couple of years book club was taken over by somebody who's personality I just couldn't stand and I lost my enthusiasm for the club and reading in general. I came across book tube instead which reignited my enthusiasm for reading and massively broadened my reading scope. But I do miss the club- good timing with your video as I've seriously been thinking about getting back into one but may just look to create my own... :)

    • @LaurenAndTheBooks
      @LaurenAndTheBooks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a shame that you lost your enthusiasm in the past, but I'm pleased it led to you finding booktube and you should definitely create your own book club!

    I nearly joined a book club once, a WhatsApp group was set up. The first few days were spent discussing what book to read, which was great. Then the moaning started, they didn’t want to read the suggested book. They couldn’t afford the book etc. Then they started with the general chit chat, which got really tedious, and we hadn’t even started reading anything. I left 😂

    Lauren: Thank you for sharing. May I ask - for your hospital based group (I am a nurse), I am wondering, what is the "purpose" of this professional book club and could you provide a few examples of the disciplines involved (is it just your department or inter professional) as well as a few books you have selected. Thank you!
