@@apicturedpurpose Almost forgot, 90% of my coloring book are amazon one. I use prisma color pencil since they are pretty cheap in USA. However, since prime day is almost here, Amazon Basics - Premium Colored Pencils, Soft Core, 48 Count (Pack of 1), Multicolor are a good dupe of the prisma. Not as good but they are way cheaper and similar. They usually go on sale too so you can get them even cheaper.

I think the tiny castles page is my favorite, too, but they are all really beautiful. I have a soft spot for the Adorable Town book, so I also adore the milk carton page. I have the Ohuhu Acrylic paint pens and besides being a great price, the tips are the perfect size and hardness for coloring book lines; I love them. After some time, as long as I knew what to expect going into it, the Amazon paper began to bother me less and less. Don't let it stop you from buying cute books (l think you'd like Coco Wyo books too) just adjust your toolset accordingly. There's also the option of priming the pages with a satin glazing medium (I use Golden) which gives the paper a little more tooth allowing you to use softer pencils, water based markers, and other water soluable mediums. 😊
Anyway, I am obsessed with your style and channel. Though you may be new to the game & may not have built up the confidence yet, I believe you have a brilliant skill for coloring and could teach others a LOT! I'm hoping you'll post more color alongs so I can borrow some of your talent for blends and color choices 😉.

Elmcolors does lots of backgrounds with pastels. Maybe scope out her videos. I believe she uses soft pastel sticks. I had chalk pastels and they seemed to get more dry and brittle with time but the pigment wasn't there for my liking so I went for soft pastel sticks from Arrtx (not terribly expensive) but honestly have barely used them. I have used pastels in pans (Jane Davenport & the super bougie $$$ pan pastels but you have to budget for those so only have a few gotten on sale).

Oh nooo! My comment has been deleted (by accident, by me, silly old me).
I really love your "How to draw ... " page. You nailed the draw part of it: if you haven't pointed out what you add i would never guessed.
The second best page is the potion cabinet, especially the doors and the gap between them. Although I find that I have to wear sunglasses to look at it: the (almost fluorescent) green is a bit too bright for me (not a critic, only my opinion and taste of colours): I would've preferred a more muted tone.
But all your pages tourned out beautiful.
    Cheers from Italy.

Ok, strap in for an essay about paper! I dont know what you know, so I'm not going to assume anything and just tell you everything I know! Fun!
The reason your coloring pencils work so well on your coloring books is because the paper was designed for that medium. The tricky part about working with mixed media is that even on mixed media paper, your materials will never work as good as they do on their intended paper.
This all boils down to what the paper is made of and what kind of tooth the paper has. Those artfully messy watercolor paintings you spoke about were probably done on cotton paper. Its more absorbant, with a wet on wet technique (meaning they got the paper really wet and then put the paint on the wet paper and let it bloom). Coloring book paper is not made of cotton, so it's not absorbant enough to be able to load the paper up with a lot of water required for the technique. The water just pools on top of the paper, and you'll likely end up with dark rings of color around where the puddle sat on the paper. But the coloring book paper works fine for flat washes of color that use very little water, what you have been doing for your backgrounds. It's essentially a marker at that point.
As for pastels, it all boils down to how rough or smooth the paper is. This is the tooth of the paper, the microscopic hills and valleys in the paper. Chalk pastels come in different hardnessess too and behave differently depending on what you're trying to do. If you look at pastel mat, the paper typically used for soft pastel paintings it feels almost like sandpaper. It has a very exaggerated tooth. When you run the pastel over it, the little valleys in the paper are filled with the pigments. Softer pastels (expensive, usually handshaped) fill this tooth very fast. Resulting in thick opaque marks. Harder pastels don't break down into the tooth as easily and are used for underpainting (because they dont fill the tooth, once the tooth is full, it won't accept anymore color) and details. I suspect the reason you're struggling with the pan pastels is because the coloring books dont have enough tooth for the pigment to stick to.
There are ways to alter coloring book paper so watercolors and pastels can behave more naturally on them. It just takes a bit of planning. Watercolor ground can be painted over a coloring page, and after a few layers, it behaves a lot more like cotton paper. Not a 1 to 1, but it's a lot better than coloring book paper. And for chalk pastel, you can paint a layer of clear gesso, and it adds a sandpapery tooth that the pastels stick to.
My only warning about shopping for cheap chalk pastels is that they are cheap because they have more binder and less pigment than expensive chalk pastels, which makes them behave more like hard pastels; even if they're being marketed as soft pastels, they're most likely hard pastels.
As for ranking your pictures, personally, I liked the milk carton shop the most! So cute! Maybe instead of ranking, you could reflect on what you learned as you experiment with different mediums. A fail isn't a fail. It's learning how not to do it, getting you one step closer to how to do it right! That's how artists learn. Sketchbooks that are full of "how not to do its" and the occasional glorious finished peice. You got this!

I definitely didn't know 99% of that 😅 This will definitely help me make more informed decisions in the future. And yes, you're definitely right. It's never a "fail," it's simply learning what not to do next time 💕

@@apicturedpurposeif you wish to prepare Amazon paper I find the best medium to use is Golden satin glazing liquid. You paint over the entire page once, wait until dry then do a second layer and more water mediums can be used. You get a huge bottle and it has a smoother lay down so it doesn’t eat your pencils like Daniel Smith watercolour medium which makes the treated page rougher and per volume is much more expensive. I know because I have both and I only used the Daniel Smith watercolour medium once after seeing colouring with K use the Golden satin glazing liquid I haven’t looked back. ❤❤❤

The small houses are soooo cute; and the little 6 vignettes as well. Love the brightness of your colors. Here in Spain the Amz paper has different quality, depending on where it comes from. If the print is from Poland (like JR Hampson books) EVERYTHING works nicely. But if the print is Italian (for example, H. Lynn) the paper is meh. However Brufuner black barrel work well, same as Markart pencils and, surprisingly, the Artezas. I'd say that the Bruts are the winners for all kind of tricky paper. Have a nice month and I'm looking forward for more videos. Cheers.
