I vividly remember one instance, years and years ago when I was playing this game as a kid, I was turtling up in the 2fort intel room as any young engineer would, and after getting bored of staring at the same room for hours I decided to venture outside the basement, where I proceeded to gun down a heavy from 300 to 0 using nothing but the engineer's trusty pistol. And in that moment, little 13 year old me exclaimed with no hint of irony in his voice: "oh my god, the pistol is the best weapon in the game!!" Thanks for proving me right, Dane.
The pistol also makes for a great spychecking tool. You can't shotgun everyone you see, particularly if they're not acting suspicious, but you can just spam the pistol all day long, and a single clip is enough to do damage to a spy. Pistol spamming at random can also reveal invisible spies.

I can't get over how they made a hitscan feel like a projectile weapon but with good feeling reliable accuracy. It scrambles the brain how good the design and execution is.
So I did some math, and the 212 bullets (Including what the Engineer already has in this mag) would weigh about 3.27 pounds (lbs). I am assuming the Pistol takes 9mm rounds, and one 9mm weighs 7 grams (g). so, 7 * 212 = 1484g. convert to pounds is 3.27166 lbs or 1.484 kg.
i always lose fights as engineer, and i never understood why, but i now realize its because I always start with the shot gun at long or medium range, and have to switch to my pistol because i'm out of shots, but i now see that if i start with the pistol i can save the shotgun for the more effective up-close. Thanks!
@@efftee I can generally have a harder time hitting shots with the pistol with scout because of his speed, specially with the pretty boys pocket pistol since it shoots faster but the reward is obviously better than the stock pistol anyways
@@matheusrios4223 well, yeah. Most people won't pick up on why they're consistently losing fights. And, if one of those reasons is because you're not using your, in most cases, negligible side arm--then it isn't surprising to not realize.

Loving this mini series on stock engineer. I always see people running "the meta" (rescue ranger, wrangler, jag) because individually they overshadow their stock counterparts. However, I find this playstyle to be too reliant on the sentry for damage output. Engineer taught us if that don't work, use more gun. Wrangler: not a gun. Jag: not a gun. RR: barely a gun
The pistol is so fucking op in saxton hale mode on engi: -it always crits/mini crits (both op as heck) -it has 200 ammo not to mention the engi regenerates metal so he can place a dispenser pretty much any time -use sentry and become biggest damage dealer on server no joke
@@maildaemon well, what you need to know is: what you think is a weaker weapon gets crit/mini crit boosted like rescue ranger, pomson or almost any melee weapon. Mostly pointless weapons go through a change like demoknight shields tank one hit and after that they break and eyelander gives heads for every hit on sh. Basically weapons are balanced, some get replaced with stock or other weapon. Servers usually notify you about this or you can alt tab out while waiting for the round to end and read the tf2 wiki.

It feels like engineer's main role is sort of skewed and kinda not that great for the people playing against and the person playing as the engineer. what is the engineer than? a worse scout with a shitty auto aim buddy? i think he should be balanced further into his support role. i also like the fact that the engineer can sort of have a relationship to the map and the movement of his team by placing teleporters and dispensers in certain spots and thus de facto masterminding the flow and concentration of his team. now since most linear maps (where engi is most played) have meta spots it's really more like the engineer is doing a dayjob and not creatively using his supportive tools to direct his team but you know... i forgot where i was going with this
@@ffff-qw7sp directing your team with teleporters is very much still a thing. oftentimes your team kind of gets stuck and doesn't use the flank routes, so what do you do? place a tele that goes to the flank route. bam, now your team is pushing from a different angle and the enemy team wasn't as prepared for it, allowing your team to finally shatter that defense and *PUSH*
I love using the pistol! It's probably my most-used Engineer secondary because it allows for such consistent damage output. Of course the wrangler is still incredibly good, but if I'm going to be moving around a lot, I feel vulnerable without that spam factor. For Scout, it accounts for a good number of my kills, since I often completely miss my shots or otherwise fail to kill the enemy with my scattergun.
This just reminds me of the bab engie I used to be playing on dustbowl so many years ago. I was setting up my sentry nest in the hallway to prevent the flank and a heavy came in. He wasn't paying attention to me yet as he was fighting someone in the other path, but my sentry wasn't ready yet. So I whipped out my pistol and charged at him, just holding down the fire button and landed every hit. Before my sentry was even ready, the heavy was already dead by my pistol. It took my by complete surprise on how I had managed to deal so much damage with just the pistol alone. The stock pistol is nothing to really scoff at. Thank you, Uncle Dane, for spreading the word of the 200 bullet reserve!

Great overview of the pistol. One clarification that may be useful for future videos, at 2:19 you mention that the pistol can be fired semi-automaticcally by holding fire down. This would in fact be automatic. Semi automatic is one round fired for every trigger pull.

How is Dane's tracking so insane? I feel like every time I use the pistol on either scout or engineer its complete RNG whether the bullet spread lines up with where I'm trying to aim, especially at medium distances

I like that headcanon, but this is a game where wearing a pair of boots makes you incapable of carrying a shotgun or a grenade launcher, you can regenerate a sandvich out of thin air every 30s, bullets can be infused with piss, and wearing a wooden shield makes you take less fire damage compared to a metal one. This game isn’t exactly bending over backwards to be realistic.
As someone who has been going battle engineer a bit more often, I have found the pistol to be a very good harassment and damage dealer from medium to long range (the latter sort of). I really need to get a strange killstreak pistol at some point.

How is Dane's tracking so insane? I feel like every time I use the pistol on either scout or engineer its complete RNG whether the bullet spread lines up with where I'm trying to aim, especially at medium distances

2:12 dude this might be why scout is faster. engie carries a whole resupply locker on his back the whole time. maybe if he shed that weight he could be a whole load faster
I like that headcanon, but this is a game where wearing a pair of boots makes you incapable of carrying a shotgun or a grenade launcher, you can regenerate a sandvich out of thin air every 30s, bullets can be infused with piss, and wearing a wooden shield makes you take less fire damage compared to a metal one. This game isn’t exactly bending over backwards to be realistic.

As someone who has been going battle engineer a bit more often, I have found the pistol to be a very good harassment and damage dealer from medium to long range (the latter sort of). I really need to get a strange killstreak pistol at some point.
