Just had an accident with 70 mph on. Interstate. Sliding down the road. I also wore a riding suit too.I believe the airbag saved me from many min injuries. Never ride without one. I walked away.
I respect the heck out of your honesty and transparency. It's at the very beginning, no dancing around it, no trickery, no "*" in the bottom corner with tiny print. Other channels should take note.....some have turned into glorified salesman. Their approach screams "disingenuous" to me. So much so that i have i no linger subscribe to their channels, and no longer watch any of their content. In a world filled with scams, biased reviews, and beginners giving advice and act as if they've been into the hobby for decades, it sure is nice to have a few channels which are authentic and honest. Many might disagree with my opinion, that is fine, doesnt mean im wrong though.
Klim Ai-1 saved my ass in rough crash last year. 2 titanium rods in right arm, 3 in right leg, chunk out of helmet and left knee reconstructed with cadaver parts on the sixth and final surgery - I don't even count the broken left hand after what I went through with the left knee - LOL. Back of airbag vest was mangled and even thought I had broken limbs my back, neck and spine and torso writ large were not even bruised or sore. Total game changer, y'all. Came off the bike at 50MPH in six lanes of traffic.
I have worn an airbag corded vest style by HitAir for over 10 years now. ABSOLUTELY I agree they offer a massive improvement in safety. My bag has deployed once (other than a test deployment when looking at buying one). I was dismounting from my bike by standing on the left side drivers peg and had my right leg way up in the air to clear my tailbag. I was a putz and had NOT put the stand down properly or left the bike in gear(DUMB). The bike rolled off the stand an I fell very hard on my left side on our concrete paver driveway. The bag went off, everything worked and I got up without scratch or a wrenched neck or sore shoulder. I was SO impressed, I'm in my 70's and I would at the very least badly wrenched my neck and likely broke my left collar bone. I wear the bloody thing ANYTIME I'm on the bike under power - Yes, even moving it around the driveway! As to tethered -frankly at the time i purchased mine the inertial operated systems were very expensive and if deployed one lost the bag for most of a riding season (I live in Canada - shorter season). I wear a vest style and it's simply the last thing I put on, I wear my usual gear depending on conditions and simply throw the vest on top. I have NEVER had it deploy accidentally (takes quite a tug to deploy it) and recharging it costs $30 canadian and 10 minutes. LOVE your channel and my off road riding is limited to gravel roads.
I’ve been wearing a Helite Turtle tethered for a decade. Probably have around 100K miles on it. The cable/steel ball connector finally broke. I bought another Helite, Hi-Viz, and will repair the original and have a spare or one to donate to a new rider. Helite is relatively lightweight. I wear it over my Aerostitch one piece. You get used to tethering. Adjusted properly you can stand while tethered riding off-road. Don’t have to worry about charging while on multi day camping trips. Simple, proven technology. On one occasion I did perform an unplanned, sudden, airborne dismount (yeah, I crashed) while bouncing down my dirt road. I’m in the air, heard a pop. Next thing I know I’m on my back in a cloud of dust watching my rear wheel spin. It felt like I was jumping backwards into bed. The next day the only part of me that was tender was my rear end. 5 minutes to replace the gas cylinder and you’re ready for more action. Like Ian, I won’t ride without an airbag. Everyone’s situation is different. But definitely check them out. Remember, cracked ribs only hurt when you breathe. See y’all in Redmond and GetOn Fest Sturgis. Ride safe.
They now make a wireless one. Why stay tethered in 2024? Does your phone have a long tangled twisty cord for the receiver going into the wall? NO you have a wireless cell phone.
You have probably saved someone’s life with this video. I have been on the fence about air bags for a while and think you have just convinced me to go for it!😊
Great advice Ian!! Last June, I nearly died after an unintended dismount on the Dempster Hwy, just a few miles South of the Arctic Circle. Got into some deep gravel/sand mix on the inside of a turn and was thrown about 70 feet. I got busted up pretty bad: Broken back, broken neck, compound fracture tibia., 8 broken ribs and punctured artery. I was wearing a full-face helmet and a hit-air airbag vest. I did a lot of cartwheeling and tumbling. I believe the airbag played a major role stabilizing my back and neck. Without it, I'm pretty certain I'd be dead, or paralyzed. That said, without the helmet, the vest wouldn't have mattered. Naturally, I'm more than ever convinced that airbag vests work.
I just picked up a Helite vest and love it. As an older rider it definitely gives me more confidence when riding alone. I went with a tethered vest due to the simplicity and lack of possible false deployment.
Bought a Helite vest a couple years ago. Does not false-deploy when I dismount. However, deployed with a minor accident and cracked a rib because cell phone was in chest pocket of jacket. Lesson learned.
For clarification, your airbag was over your jacket so your phone was between your airbag and your body, and the pressure from the airbag on your phone cracked your rib, right?
Just bought two, one for me and one for my wife, and I will sell off or give away all our passive armor. At 66 and about to retire to Spain to travel the continent via motorcycle, there is no reason not to be wearing this technology now that it's available. The Leatt full chest protector I often wear off road is awesome, but it is also hot, is more bulky, and as you said, I need to wear a neck brace. With this airbag system, I will have more protection while being even more comfortable. My other CE2 armored shirts (Bohn Armor) are very comfortable even under a shell, but nowhere near the protection of an airbag, and again, neck brace. Though I am a very safe rider, I do ride off road and on twisties, and one mistake can land us in the hospital. For me, protection is everything on a motorcycle.
Picked one up for my upcoming 40,000 mile ride. Concerned it might be stifling in hot conditions. I have a traditional armor set up waiting for me in San Diego incase the Tech Air doesn't work out. Thanks for your motorcycle journalism - it's a positive contribution to the riding community.
I tried riding in it around the block and it was 70f. I immediately started sweating on my chest area since there is virtually zero airflow. I then tried my Alpinestars A10 and I was momentarily cold because of the great airflow and the fact that I was damp on the chest area. That sealed the deal for me. It’s an incredible piece of equipment but it’s too warm for summer riding. Also, it doesn’t have any side rib protection and that’s the area I usually bust up.
Thank you for the wealth of information that you give to all of us out here in the motorcycling community. I believe in all the gear all the time. Thanks to you, I am buying that airbag system.
After >20 years of riding without a major accident / injury I had a bad crash (high side) in 2019 resulting in a destroyed collarbone that has taken me many years and multiple surgeries to recover from, no airbag but my helmet definitely saved my life and my other gear likely reduced the level of other injuries. Since then I have purchased the best available airbags in an attempt to reduce the risk of that happening again. That injury has cost me many times the cost of an airbag in direct medical costs and in terms of lost life opportunities it's orders of magnitude. A year ago I also ended up at the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident and saw the tragic aftermath that I suspect might have been avoidable with gear like this. Beyond just reducing injury recovery I think protecting your torso area is also a potential life saver for more serious crashes. In 2020 I got the Tech Air 5 which I have used extensively and more recently I also got the Tech Air Off road as soon as it became available. It's true that all these systems bring with them a little extra discomfort/bulk and less airflow which isn't ideal but I still don't ride without them. I fortunately haven't had a chance to crash test either system but as suggested in the video I now see these systems much the same as I do a helmet, essential safety gear now that it is available. If you are riding a $15K bike wearing a $500 helmet (and probably at least another $500 in gear) then an extra ~$500-700 for an airbag seems like a pretty reasonable investment (
@@BigRockMoto Forgot to mention in my comment but thanks for everything you do on this channel BTW, I really appreciate your detailed and thoughtful videos and reviews, top notch stuff.
This is a timely video and you’ve crammed a lot of useful information into it. I’ve owned the Tech Air 5 for about a year, which works well under racing leathers as well as with street riding gear. I find the battery life to be considerably better than anticipated. It took sometime to get used to pulling it on simultaneously with the upper portion of my race suit, but it is comfortable once in place. The back portion is no big deal when compared with the usual track-focused back protector. The new Alpinestars releases, including this off-road version, are really interesting, not only due to the armor, but particularly because the user can now change the canisters. I’m older, and, for me, the biggest concern about spills and thrills is time lost due to recovery. Injuries and surgeries are not fun, but it is the forced time off the bikes that hurts the most. Alpinestars is providing a real service in their continued development of these sophisticated devices and accompanying firmware, and I am glad you partnered with Revzilla to share this information with us.
I picked up a Klim A1-1 a couple months ago. I went back and forth between tethered and non, over or under. I live in So Cal, so when it is hot, it will be hot no matter what, but the Klim fits very snug and is comfortable under my various jackets (Latitude, Baja S4 and Marrakesh), and will not block air flow on my summer jackets. the Alpine Star looks nice , but would be too bulky for me. One reason I chose the Klim is because they also offer a Rally mode so it will not deploy quite as easily with an off road tip over (that being said I am on road much more than off road). I read all the complaints about subscriptions but in the end it is worth it to me (you can buy the Klim outright for 300 bucks more but I chose the sub plan due to smaller initial investment ($400) plus the module will be replaced if there are any hardware updates or issues). It is just a part of my hobby (pay for my Garmin in reach sub as well).
I have the Klim as well, and the subscription complaints are way overblown. Ryan F9 didn’t exactly help, telling everyone that their vests would suddenly stop working out of the blue if someone’s visa expired.
I'm also using the same system as is in the Klim (In&Motion) and I'm happy paying the subscription. I've received excellent customer service from In&Motion when I needed it.
Ditto here. The Rally version has been my go-to for 2 years. It is breathable and stretchy, and works well over my LD Comfort base layer and under my Marrakesh, even in hot temps. I opted for the subscription with In&Motion. I’m not seeing any advantage of the Astars over this setup.
I’m wearing a Dainese Smart Vest - love it. No tethering, no subscription, but also no shoulder/collar bone protection. There’s some trade off. Main issue that I’m experiencing is that I bought all my gear to fit snug but not uncomfortable. The idea is to avoid that protection pads are moving on impact. With it being snug, though, the airbag vest may not have enough space to fully inflate. I might have to buy a new coat to accommodate the vest. Still a good investment, though.
Thanks for the comprehensive overview -- I've been circling around getting one of these for several months -- a recent accident by someone I ride with off-road who lost a kidney due to internal bleeding after a crash, another friend who recently got one and rides with me and your video where the final pushes I needed -- just ordered one
Good review. I had not heard anyone speak to the heat/ventilation aspect until this. So very good to know. I like that this unit can ride street or offroad and is self serviceable, I think that's a huge plus. agree on your cost breakdown in terms of justifying it. As soon as I can save up a bit I will likely be getting one too (it's on my Christmas list for sure). I've seen a few videos saying it's cheaper than a trip to the ER, But even more so than the crazy $$$ it costs to go to the hospital in the USA at least, is the impact of injury which you just never know. It could be life altering, it could be chronic pain, or so many other unknows. As a nurse I can tell you many many people I work with would gladly pay this sticker price if it meant preventing some of their now long term health issues.
I think it's worth the money, but what would also be nice would be if the vest had integrated heating so you can plug it into the bike when it gets cold. I really like my heated vest, but those need to be worn just over your base layer. It would be nice to have it built into the vest.
I’ve had the Tech Air Off-road in my shopping cart for a couple months now. I was waiting for your thoughts! I’m 61 and unfortunately when I fall I don’t bounce like I used to! I’m more like an egg…I crack when I fall! I’m in San Diego so as you know it gets hot when you ride offroad so that’s a factor for me. I’m also glad to hear there is rib protection. The cost of entry looks high but for me if it keeps me off the injured list it’s worth every penny!
My wife and I have been using the Spidi tethered air vest for the past 5 years. Mainly when riding pavement. Fortunately I have never deployed the vest and my wife only once on zero mph tip over on her 990 ktm. Just last week we replaced the Spidi with the Alpinestars Tech 5 air bag system. The tech 5 is so comfortable under my Klim Baja jacket. We ride probably 40% gravel and forest roads and according to the Tech 5 manual is applicable to the Tech 5. The vest of course blocks some air flow but much less than the full off-road Alpinestars off road version. It is nice to know your spouse is protected as much possible plus the cost is off set when compared to a hospital visit.
I live in a warmer part of the US. I use the Dainese D-air vest because I can wear it over my Knox Urbane mesh. I've found this combo has the best airflow. The only drawback to the Dainese D-air is that the canisters sit lower on the back and place the mass lower instead of on the shoulder blades; but, unlike the A-stars, it can be worn as the outer layer. I encourage everyone to find the airbag system that works best for them and ride safely.
So I just had a low speed off on double track on August 10. I was riding a Bata 390. I was in Washington State. I was wearing a Forcefield ProX V2 Armoured shirt. I locked up the front wheel and hit a small drainage ditch that was filled with a small log (complete Pilot error but we all make mistakes). I went over the handlebars and slammed the ground on my side. There is not protection on the side of the Forcefield protection. I broke 6 ribs and punctured a lung. I had to be Medivact. The medical folks that helped me were amazing, local volunteer Fire department, EMS, Life Flight and the Wenatchee Hospital. I just got the bill for the Hospital $42K and Life Flight $67K, yes over a 100 Thousand $...... I think if I was wearing the AStar Tech Air Offroad I would have walked away so the cost is a no brainer.
I’ve ordered one and I should have it soon in Mongolia. Maybe the first here. Anyway I’m convinced it’s a revolution in protection. With some caveats. I agree that it needs forearm straps. These keep the elbow armour in place and prevent the shirt riding up the arm in a fall. It really should have side rib protectors. These should be mountable on the straps that secure the chest piece to the back piece. The bladder looks very vulnerable to cut hazards, especially down the upper arms. A large amount of bladder material is only covered by stretch mesh. So you could easily have a side fall not needing a deployment but trashing the bladder because of pointy material on the ground. Or even just riding through trees. This is probably solved by wearing a jacket but who wants to do that in summer? Instead I think the abrasion resistant material should cover the entire bladder. A hole or tear in the bladder would be catastrophic and require a replacement at $300 plus shipping. Finally, I think hard plastic plates would be better for rocky terrain. These should be optional on a tech-air off-road. In particular I’m talking of the elbows, shoulders and side ribs.
Brilliant safety concept. My only issue re off-road adventure is the 4 deployment service. Not for cost reasons but because for a period of time you will not have an airbag. Not good on big multi week/long distance adventures. example I fell off 7 times in 7,350 miles doing the extended TAT. Just the normal stupid stall on a steep slope and fall type situations that can happen with a bike loaded with 50 lbs of luggage. A fall every 1000 miles of-road is not really that bad. But if I had one of these, technically I would have had to send it away half way through after 4 falls., leaving me unprotected for half the trip. Just saying.
Good video yet again. I bought a Helite Turtle II this spring......however I wish I hadn't been on the fence about one because I sure could have used it early this spring. My road was rutted up quite bad this spring and one Monday morning when I was headed to work it was all frozen so the ground had no give whatsoever and I apparently caught a rut and I was on the ground sliding at probably near 40mph give or take a little. No warning, no nothing, I was riding along and next thing I was slammed onto the ground hard. I ended up with a fractured finger and a vertebra and from the feel of it some pretty bruised ribs. I don't think I would have hurt near so bad if I had already bought the airbag vest at that time. I have been since thinking about getting this Alpinestars one though because I am not sure if I parted from the bike enough to deploy the tethered one before I hit the ground. Your thoughts would be appreciated on this scenario. Thanks.
ON March 27, 2024 I was hit at an intersection, by a motorist who ran a red light, just behind my right leg. I was wearing protective gear on my 2018 R1200GS (BMW armored jacket and Arai XD-3 helmet) which saved me. I have no recollection of the accident due to the concussion (about 4 hr memory loss to this day), but witnesses said they saw me flying through the air off the bike and landing on my upper back and head then sliding to the median. Bike totaled, me fortunately just bruised with some lasting soreness right shoulder and hip along with very sore neck (whiplash) for several weeks) and, of course, the concussion. I'm seriously considering this piece of kit as I do mostly ADV and dirt riding and this seems like, for me at 66+ yrs old now and having two prior broken collar bones in separate moto accidents one on road and one off road, that this gear would be added insurance for critical areas such as my neck. I would use it both with and without a jacket and for many situations would consider using it deactivated under an ADV jacket under certain circumstances. Can this unit be used without activating for casual riding so I don't have to be concerned as much if I'm wearing a jacket that may have less room such as my Basilisk (about a 6 year old jacket now which I use over a slightly smaller off road armor system by Fox)? I am in the market for a new ADV jacket since my BMW one is a bit damaged and am considering the Mosko Boundary IR?
Another excellent production. Ian not only reviews the product but also gives practical tips how to use the airbag in a variety of scenarios AND how to integrate it with other gear. 5 stars! I am now considering buying this gear because I can see the solution of what to do after the airbag deploys. Before I supposed that one would finished the ride with a deflated bag and no protection. The cartridge idea is great. 👍 👌
Ian, no I have not thought about an air bag. Watching your video does bring awareness to considering the purchase of an Air bag. Previously being an avid snowmobiler in the Canadian Rockies, wearing an aibag was a must. Have you tried this Air bag and what are your thoughts: Dainese D-Air Smart Long Sleeve Sport Jacket
Only problem I have is I can't find replacement cartridges anywhere. Thankfully I haven't set mine off yet, but it's just a matter of time. As for airbags, this is the first full season I'll have converted to the airbag. It took about a week to get used to it (and stop worrying about it randomly going off) and just ride. It's nice knowing I have the protection should I have a really bad one.
@@paul.vanhout57 Initially tried to get the Tech Air 3, couldn't get it (long story) and ended up doing the Tech Air offroad. I've had it since about February and like it a lot.
When the TAOF came out I immediately sold my other airbags. I had a Klim vest, a Helite vest, and a RST integrated airbag jacket. I now wear my ATOF daily commuting and when I’m on the trails. To me, there’s no reason to get anything else unless you ride on the track.
Can I ask what kind of tracks you ride? I just got into enduro, and I’m concerned about false positive deployments. Each deployment is essentially $85. Ointment and Tylenol is about $1. I just don’t want to have it activate every time that I’m tossed off.
@@RidinDirty86 I’m a slow poke on a big bike so take my case with a grain of salt. I mostly ride tighter technical trails in the PNW so I don’t get up a lot of speed. With that said I’ve dropped my bike and been thrown off a fair share going at moderate speeds and never had any false deployments. If you’re a quick rider I would run it in ‘Rally’ mode and you should be good as that only deploys in the more extreme scenarios.
@@tylermcdonald8965 That sounds great! I’m a slower rider when it comes to technical stuff. I ride a DR650 on dual sport days with longer road stretches, and a 350 for single track/enduro days. This seems like it’d be a good investment if it works as designed.
I purchased the tech air off-road the day it came out. I didn't know it was even coming. I wanted an airbag but none were really what I wanted for offroad and adventure riding - this fit the bill. I've had one deployment so far and it wasn't actually necessary. However it was in "street" mode while I was riding through a snowy paved road. Lost the rear and dropped the bike but I didn't even fall over. Now I keep it in Enduro as default unless I'm doing urban riding since Street is meant to save you if you're hit by a car while stopped - something that is rare on adventure ride. Now I'm looking for a mesh jacket to replace my Halo since that has non-removable armor and like you I prefer to keep the tight armor over the jacket armor.
Ian, thanks for putting this video out! I’ve been trying to find an armor jacket but couldn’t make up my mind. Riding in the Temecula area the temp changes throughout the year get pretty crazy. I’m glad you included the different combinations of riding gear depending on weather and temp. Last time I went riding with the Monkeys I almost ate it a few times and I need it up my protection game. Thanks again!
Thanks for this video. Very thorough showing how it can be used in various conditions. Looks like the technology has gotten to where I can consider getting an air bag.
Ive had the klim airbag for 3 years. People rag on it cause they have a subscription OPTION but it lowers the initial cash outlay. Fits great under gear not to hot in the summer
Intrigued with the advancements with air bag technology. Anything that might keep me out of the hospital or keep me riding is worth consideration. Temperature management for both cold and hot weather the only thing giving me pause. Thank you for the deep dive - objective review regardless of how the product was sourced.
Really helpful video, I don’t wear a airbag but from the comments here and fortNines comment on armour I think we should all be buying one. Thanks for showing how they can be used in the real world..
Helite Backpack makes so much sense I don't understand why everyone isn't wearing one. If you're already wearing a hydration pack, why not have it also be an airbag? I absolutely love mine.
I bought a RST sabre textile vest that had airbag included with in&motion set up when I started riding last year. I considered Tech air5 but wasn't a fan of the lack of serviceability at the time. It made getting into riding (more safely) a lot cheaper since the cost of purchase is lower with their optional subscription model. Even set up track mode for a month doing three track days in June. It's a nice system but I may switch out to Alpinestars once their affordable vests get easy replaceable canisters in a couple years and when I decide to get even more gear. As i'm new to riding, one vest is plenty :) Thanks for your review!
Fantastic presentation. You certainly covered most points. Cost is cheap. I've noticed the equistrian trial races use them ofcourse the 'crash' is alot simpler. Kudos to alpine star and yourself with the fashion breakdown.
Ian, I really appreciate your in depth reviews on gear. I have gone through so much gear over the years and returned a lot due to odd fitment etc, detailed reviews are very helpful to give me some insight before I buy 👍
Yes! I bought a Helite e-Turtle for the street, knowing that I would eventually have to also go to an off-road airbag vest. The Turtle would just be too restrictive for the dirt & the wrong algorithms. Two of my buddies crashed on tarmac & both injured their ribs during a fun run dual sport event. So I struggle w what seems like a lack of protection there w both of the off-road bags, Alpinestar & the soon to come Helite off-road. Both supposedly tested at Dakar. Spoke w a Helite Rep who said they are focusing on life-threatening injuries. And wanting to get their algorithms right before release. So… I would be really interested in a comparison btwn the two when Helite finally comes to market.
My techair5 went off when I fell over while stationary at a gas pump (kickstand flipped back up and didn't realize). I wish there was a minimum speed setting because it's about $250 (including shipping both ways) for a recharge.
I wear a tethered Hit-Air airbag vest since day 3 of my motorcycling life. Hi-viz yellow over a hi-viz jacket. Yes, I'm a traffic cone. It's okay, but I wouldn't mind something that is integrated in a jacket and tetherless for the convenience of it. Then again, I'd have to charge it and hope that the processor interprets my trip over the handlebars as an actual crash.
A well designed airbag like the A* Tech 5 and Helite Turtle series also protect your neck so you don’t need a neck brace. The Helite Turtles also protect your coccyx. Unfortunately Helite’s electronics are sub par to Klim and A*, so stick to tethered if in the US.
I have two airbag vests: hit-air vest for warm/hot conditions, and a Dainese for cooler weather. I live in a very hot and humid climate so the Hit-Air gets more use. I wear it over a mesh jacket or mesh armored shirt. The Dainese blocks a lot of air, so it’s not suitable for any riding over 80F, but it’s great on cooler or cold days worn over a jacket. The Hit-Air is tethered, and the Dainese is computer controlled.
I bought first an Dainese vest too and I agree that's it's to warm. Now I'm using the Dainese airbag jacket which has a much better airflow and it's great for warm weather too.
Which of the hit air models do you have? I really like the tech air off road, but I also have to be realistic about heat management. Texas summers are brutal.
I bought this same one. 1 month ago I watched a 19 yr old at 50 mph go down infront of my truck about 30 ft in front of me. He slid on his chest for about 30 ft. And only had a helmet and no other gear. He had some serious road rash on his chest. I usually where a leather jacket and other gear. The leather jacket has no protection for the chest. I and I will not ride without aleast the tech air on. Whether it deploys or not just for that reason. This thing is awesome. Great review again.
17:40 that's a summer jacket if you live in Alaska. If summer sees temperatures nearing 50 Celsius even a T-Shirt can feel too much. :) Very informative video, thank you. I wished you'd have talked more about the backpack style airbags. Maybe in the future you can review that too... thanks!
I have a helite E-Turtle and an Alpinestars Techair 5. My only issue? I can't bring it into the cabin when I fly, because I always fly with cabin luggage only and never with a checked bag. Why do I have 2? Because the Helite has one of the biggest airbags in existence today. Thick, large. Protects almost everything. Neck, shoulders, hips. Not like the Tech Air 5, which is really small. And i can wear it outside wirh a fistful of space in between my body and the vest. This really helps with airflow and staying cool. And for the Alpinestars, i only wear that when im riding in "cool" gear on my '96 cruiser, because the Tech Air 5 fits under my leather jacket. Both are serviceable, and if you send them in before you sell them or after you crashed them, you can get them recertified and washed.
Love your videos Ian. For the last 2-3 years I have been thinking of buying an air bag system. 2 years ago, almost bought the Helite tethered. Last year almost bought the Helite electronic version. Most of my riding is ADV/Dual sport with occasional sport touring. This should be good for all. Unfortunately, last month I just replaced my 2010 Alpinestars Bionic body armor shirt with the Leatt Body Armor 3DF based on your recommendations. I won’t hold you to it, but if your video came out 2 months ago, I probably would have skipped the Leatt.
Thanks Ian, I appreciate the effort you’ve put into this review. I’m definitely looking at this sort of protection after a long period of recovery from a traffic crash. I’m yet to decide on which particular one to go with, but this has been very helpful. 👍🇦🇺
great review! And I just realized that thanks to a defibrillator installed in my chest, I can no longer wear my neck brace. It sits right on the location of the unit under my skin. I may have to go to one of these things.
On a recent trip my friend highsided his KTM 890 wearing a Dainese airbag. He hadn’t thought about his back pack which was tightly fitted. When the airbag deployed it cracked a couple of ribs as had no room to move. Other than that the airbag did a great job and he walked away with only a broken toe. So it’s good that you pointed out loosening the back pack, as obviously very important! Another great video👍
Every airbag vest manual explains the room needed for inflation size. Tech air 5 comes with a small book, but if a rider won't read instructions, they are a danger to themselves with most sophisticated technology around today. Be smart, read the manual.
I have one, i purchased it the day it was delivered to the bike store. I am going to use a Warm and Safe 12v heated base layer in cold conditions underneath it. This should reduce the amount of layers/ bulk and the need to remove/ add layers in changing conditions.
I was about to buy the tech air offroad. I had a good look at the electronics which concerned me. The trip included river crossings and I asked the sales person what would happen if I fell in the water or the vest got wet. He said it would wreck the electronics and would not function after that and is not covered under warranty! In the cartridge area the switch and other electronics are not at all protected from any water intrusion as far as I can see which is a shame!
I definitely will want to get an airbag system but I have not been riding much recently and the last couple times I did I tipped over my Tenere 700 . The armor I wear was fine for that , wouldn't have needed much in those cases . My only concern is that going out on a ride is that your day is done if you have a tip over , you wouldn't want to continue riding if you're expecting to get on the Hwy . Like the idea that you don't need a neck brace because that was going to be my next purchase , guess I need to figure out what type of airbag system to go with . Thanks Ian .
Something to consider: the gentleman at Adventure Rider Radio recently had a session with Dr. Chris Leatt and part of the discussion was airbag vest. BLUF: there’s limited data supporting the effectiveness of an airbag over a neck brace.
My brother has been wearing the Tech-5 for a few years now, and it saved his bacon when he crashed his S1000RR up Angeles Crest Highway about a year ago. So, ya, I'm definitely a fan of the airbags. I don't own one personally yet because of the costs and because I overheat easily, and that's an actual show stopper for me here in SoCal when riding in the hotter months. But if I ever get that big bonus that's not already spent on something else, I'm going to jump on one of these.
The money and recovery time saved from a rib injury was worth it for me. Being hot in leathers is a negative too but you'll never see a track rider skip leathers even on hot days like when most track days are running in CA. But the riders are often in good shape with bodies that regulate heat better.
For fitting a jacket 4cm extra room around he circumference is the formula given by the Tech Air 7x, not the Tech Air off road. In section 12 of the Tech Air off road manual it says: "measure the circumference of the chest (A) and the garment width on the chest region (A1). The garment is compatible with Tech-Air® Off-Road System if A1 is greater than A divided by 2 plus 16 cm (A1 > 0.5 x A + 16 cm or A1 > 0.5 x A + 6,30 in)" I'm not clear if this is actually needed or why they don't just give a single number circumference number like they do for their other airbags. Have you had it deploy in a jacket yet?
I bought the Tech Air 5 as soon as it was available l several years ago and will be adding Tech 10 for my racing leathers. This will be my next investment for off-road and adventure. The only annoyance is that while the off-road vest is available the canisters are “out of stock” but, at least, there is finally a SKU available.
Many thanks Ian! Great to hear your opinion about it. I agreed that its so much safer to ride with a airbag. I will buy the Revit avertum very soon! Thanks a lot, your reviews are very honest
Came off my V-Strom a couple of years ago. I was wearing full armour and lost no skin but still had 16 rib fractures, a fractured sternum (breastbone) and a punctured lung. Definitely looking at getting an airbag system as soon as I can find one large enough to fit my chest. Considering a vest that way I can still swap my jacket according to the weather without having to get multiple air bags.
Full gear on, crashed with only abt 40km/h & broke my collarbone. Thankfully I feel almost heeled after 6 weeks. Visit to the doctor this week and then to alpine stars for my first airbag vest. Everything happens for a reason.
Hit air (OG Japanese air bag manufacturer - also used by Japanese Moto Police) is the most cost effective and they offer multiple options: with or without back/chest protector integrated. I use their race vest on my sports bike (gas canister on the back) and regular vest on my other bikes where it’s not an issue. Simple gas canister that you can replace yourself. And you can keep all your riding gear no issues. I always use layers and close to body armor anyway, and this just fits over no hassle.
I have friends that tested when they did Dakar and said this was the ticket. I have about 600 miles now and this is the way to go. The only draw back that I have found is that I had to get bigger jacket.
I have the tech air (street version? I think the 7? Its like a gray vest with a hard back protector) and i will never ride without it. I was playing around in a gravel pit and taking turns too sharp and the wheels came out from under me doing maybe 15mph... i was at a steep lean angle and that thing was inflated as soon as the weels lost traction and was at full inflation before i hit the ground and im near certain it prevented a collar bone break. I have no idea how it works (magic?) But theyre incredible and well worth the $$. I would go so far to say that if you cant afford one, dont ride your bike until you can
I have gained too much weight to wear anything under my existing jackets. I like the Helite Leather Street and Track vest. I guess it does not have the algorithms needed for dirt riding and the gas canisters are not so expensive.
An upgrade to CE Level 2 passive back, shoulder and elbow protectors would probably sell me on this product. I am reluctant to give up CE Level 2 protection in my current mesh jacket. A Helite Turtle 2 Airbag Vest (tether system) on top of my mesh jacket currently strikes me as a better approach (for me). I need to ride on pavement to get to dirt roads and trails.
Hi Ian. Very informative video on a very interesting topic. I’m interested in the Tech Air 5. I think that air bags for motorcyclists may improve motorcycle safety significantly. Thanks for the information. Great video!
I just got one from Revzilla. I just had a bad crash and destroyed my left shoulder. I had a broken shoulder socket, shattered scapula, broken ribs, partially collapsed lung, and separated ligaments on my clavicle. I was wearing full protective gear, but it just wasn’t enough due to the impact and the angle I hit the rock road surface.
Sorry to hear. About your injuries. I had some of your injuries (ribs, pneumothorax, grade 5 shoulder) from a crash in a mountain bike race, and after those (lesser) injuries I have been looking closely at an airbag vest. For me seems a no brainer if it reduces injuries. Hope your recovery is progressing well
@@brianglendenning1632 mountain bike crash - ouch! I suppose the tree didn't jump out of the way... Yipes!! I am recovering well and stoked for an upcoming trip. The airbag vest is kind of an extra insurance policy that if anything happens again I can make it home.
Thank you Ian, that's a good review. I'm rolling on a EVS Ballistic for quite a few seasons. works really good of slow trail riding. The airbag sounds really good for dual sporting and street where the speeds are higher and impact greater.
It's on my list for purchase although I don't know which one yet; inside, outside, tethered or non-tethered. Thanks for showing this one though as it's been helpful.
I did a lot of research before I bought my Helite vest. One of my concerns, which Ian should have covered was the issue of how the electronics detects a fall. You will find that these systems use a gps signal and specifically warn that if something is blocking the signal they may not work correctly. I think this warning applies to all electronic systems and you need to read the fine print in the supplied literature. Also I was put off the electronic vests as buyers have to pay either annual fees or an upfront fee to the owner of the electronic “brain” , after buying the vest. I have forgotten to tether my vest in the initial period of ownership but am now used to it. The Helite vest is external, very easy to put on and allows free flowing air. If your current jacket is too small for an inside vest you are up for an other expensive jacket, plus if you wear down inside jackets it can get a bit squishy too.
I see a lot of people talking about the price. I was almost killed by a drunk driver a few years back. It took me years to be able to get on a bike again, but I love riding. I mainly ride off road now. I got the Alpinestars Off Road last month. It is a lot of $$, but worth every penny. Priceless.
I have a Helite airbag vest, which I think I will prefer to the electronic alternatives. I like and trust the simplicity of the tether (which I've never pulled accidentally, even when I forget it when getting off the bike). I also think the $300 USD check-up cost is not to be underestimated. If you have even simple falls, that will run into money, and the canisters for this vest seem much more expensive than the Helite.. Regardless, I think airbag systems are a brilliant way to go, and I feel better wearing it. Hitting the ground is never fun, and if it saves your life (or your spine) even once, its worth it.
Helite turtle 2 tethered, simple, reliable, inexpensive replacement cartridges. Thinking about electronics soon with AI development . Nice for off road, thanks Ian
Looks amazing only limitation would be in cold weather. If you use heated gear. There is no way to use a heated jacket with a system like this. 😥This is also a limitation of Armor Suits and why I have to put the armor back into my jacket when the weather gets cold.
I have an A* Tech Air 5 and while it doesn’t allow air flow directly to the body, enough air flows around it to make it not feel too hot unless it’s in the 90s for me. Fortunately haven’t needed it but it’s great protection and I’m glad I bought. I do worry about false deployments but based on Revzilla reviews I’ve read, those seem to have decreased so they must have updated the algorithm.
Are you ready to adopt airbags? Why or why not?

See my reply below. More work is needed to improve all brands/models.
My helite airbag saved me from any life changing injuries from my accident last year.
Just had an accident with 70 mph on. Interstate. Sliding down the road. I also wore a riding suit too.I believe the airbag saved me from many min injuries. Never ride without one. I walked away.
wow, amazing! glad you are ok
Which airbag were you wearing?
Its the sudden stop they say.
So glad that you're alright
Been riding and racing for 30 years. The older I get, the less shit I wear. So yeah, f this noise.
What you said! ✅
Wow. Glad you're ok
How’d you come off the bike?
@@alexmoreno8156 using exceptionally poor judgment. Knew better than to do what I did but . . . F'd around and found out . . .
Great info and feedback
Ride safe.
Great info
They now make a wireless one. Why stay tethered in 2024? Does your phone have a long tangled twisty cord for the receiver going into the wall? NO you have a wireless cell phone.
You have probably saved someone’s life with this video. I have been on the fence about air bags for a while and think you have just convinced me to go for it!😊
Glad I could help!
@@TheLaughingMan42I'm waiting for the answer!
Thanks for this information, I'm going to get one.
I really learn a lot from your channel.
Thanks again!
If you are riding a $15K bike wearing a $500 helmet (and probably at least another $500 in gear) then an extra ~$500-700 for an airbag seems like a pretty reasonable investment (
Very well said thank you
@@BigRockMoto Forgot to mention in my comment but thanks for everything you do on this channel BTW, I really appreciate your detailed and thoughtful videos and reviews, top notch stuff.
Thanks for the review. It’s a no brainer, it’s on the list for my next gear purchase.
Glad to help
I've had a kilm for 4 years, id rather get updates and 4 years in I spent the same as this new one. I'll probably replace it with the same next year.
@@4940markhutchins Not as much shoulder protection on the Klim.
This was a really well thought out and presented video. Very nice job.
Thank you kindly!
Fully agree. I'm a huge fan on airbag technology and will continue to invest in it as it improves over the years to come.
Had not thought about or considered an air bag until seeing this video. Will consider it now, and, if/when, will of course use your links. Thanks.
Great info thanks
The best motorcycle related reviews on YT or anywhere for that matter!!! TY!!!
Excellent review as always. Keep up the good work
I’ve ordered one and I should have it soon in Mongolia.
Thanks.
I have been using a Helite Air Bag jacket for the past 3 years. Saved me when I went airborne.
Glad it was helpful!
I thought you went Tech Air 5 - did you upgrade to the off-road version?
Bought a tech air 5 this year. Like riding a motorcycle, but also have a family to get back to
Glad to see you did a review on these, I will be getting one!
Glad I could help!
Glad it was helpful!
Ive had the klim airbag for 3 years. People rag on it cause they have a subscription OPTION but it lowers the initial cash outlay. Fits great under gear not to hot in the summer
Awesome info Ian. Thanks for the review. This is a realistic concern for the aging moto connoisseur 😉
Same here! ✅
Offroad, I can crash 3 - 4 times in day. Airbag would be great, how do i re arm / refill the protective charge on the trail?
As i'm new to riding, one vest is plenty :)
Thanks for your review!
Fantastic presentation. You certainly covered most points. Cost is cheap. I've noticed the equistrian trial races use them ofcourse the 'crash' is alot simpler. Kudos to alpine star and yourself with the fashion breakdown.
I would much prefer if these used standard off the shelf CO2 cartridges.
Ian, I really appreciate your in depth reviews on gear. I have gone through so much gear over the years and returned a lot due to odd fitment etc, detailed reviews are very helpful to give me some insight before I buy 👍
Glad to help!
I wear one since last season but thank god never saw it in action. I believe in that and I am sure it can prevent a lot of damage.
Very informative video, thank you.
Just getting back into riding. Wow, this is a must have piece of gear !
@@jr.6199 Well that goes without saying. Sadly my friend is either lazy or stupid😂
@@LloydGrace1 As Honda says "Stupid Hurts"... read the manual.
Already got it. Thanks for your review. It solidified my purchase! Greetings from Norway! 😊
Same. :)
Great to hear!
I listened to that episode but note sure that guy is impartial since his whole business is neck braces.
In section 12 of the Tech Air off road manual it says:
"measure the circumference of the chest (A)
and the garment width on the chest region (A1). The garment is
compatible with Tech-Air® Off-Road System if A1 is greater than A
divided by 2 plus 16 cm (A1 > 0.5 x A + 16 cm or A1 > 0.5 x A + 6,30 in)"
I'm not clear if this is actually needed or why they don't just give a single number circumference number like they do for their other airbags.
Wow, that sounds bad. Hope you're ok now.
Great video. I went with the Klim product last summer and wear it every time now. No brainer!
You're a cool guy, I don't even ride a motorcycle, but I watch all of your videos.
Thanks Ian!! Think the technology is finally here!. Def getting one..
Right on!
I’ve owned the tethered and the klim. Got the techair and it’s my fav. Too hot for two stoke dirt bikes for me. But great for adv.
Priceless.
Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you're riding again.
Best item that has come out of racing. Small price to pay, with the helmet.
Great point!
Why couldn't I wear my heated gear under the air jacket?
I have an A* Tech Air 5 and while it doesn’t allow air flow directly to the body, enough air flows around it to make it not feel too hot unless it’s in the 90s for me. Fortunately haven’t needed it but it’s great protection and I’m glad I bought. I do worry about false deployments but based on Revzilla reviews I’ve read, those seem to have decreased so they must have updated the algorithm.
