Stealth GPS Tracking - 10 Year Powered

- This modification of an Apple AirTag will keep it powered, without battery change, for over 10 years. The tag is also now running in stealth mode preventing it from producing any music or locating sounds. The Tag is connected to an external Lithium 3.6 Volt AA battery. The battery chemistry of the ER14505 is rated at 10 years but they have been known to last 20 years. Once a Tag is modified with the 10 year battery you can then permanently install the tags into things like your Car and you'll never have to worry about changing the battery again. Keep track forever of your assets and possessions, for longer then you could ever imagine, with this simple modification.

Can't show you, YT might get mad ... but "hint hint"
Peter, I absolutely love the content. Great work, keep it up.
Much appreciated!
I do this but use even larger batteries. Tadiran TD-4930/T. Should be 30 years of juice. I pot the entire thing in Loctite PL Marine adhesive sealant. Hidden inside our equipment quietly pinging away.
The Tadiran XOL series is rated for 40 years of life. Hopefully youtube is still a thing when I get my first low battery indication so I can post an update!
What make you pick that brand? I never hear about it
@@TheTAEclub we use Tadiran batteries at work. They are also used in tons of low draw applications like toll passes (EZ PASS) and other electrical devices. I figured it would be perfect for this application. I guess I’ll have to wait a few decades to find out
For something more compact, you could use the larger lithium button cells like 2450 or 2477
They do have less capability (1000mAh still 4-5 years for airtag or smarttag) , the ER14505 or LS14500 is 2400mAh (usually used in smoke detectors for 10 year life time)
Still Be intresting how long these actually last for, guess I come back in 10 years
Make sure to use GE silicone 2 the "2" or "ii" is the important part, it is non acetic acid curing. As other silicones cure they release acetic acid (vinegar) which can eat the copper out of pcbs even as a vapor/gas in an enclosed/stagnant air space. We use silicone caulk in some of our electric assemblies and have learned the hard way how important that is when we picked up GE silicone 1 instead of GE silicone 2.
Also, there is a specific neutral cure (oxime) that corrodes copper, I also found out the hard way 😂
Great video. I saw in an instructable a while ago for the same thing (for tracking your vehicle); but your video explains things more clearly.
BT proximity tracking, not GPS. You do say this in the video but in my opinion, the thumbnail is completely misleading. Aside from that, what you’re doing is a fair mod to an AirTag. The AirTag bit is a good call, because most other BT LE devices need an app to do the tracking and forwarding, whereas the Apple devices are built into the the whole Apple “find my” ecosystem.
"Ohhhh, my pkcell!"
Is it iSO or .. iOS...
Sorry bro.. lol
Really enjoy your videos. Fellow Twin Cities resident... Minneapolis here
2 nights ago I dreamt my car was stolen. So when I got up I checked if my AirTag was still working, it had been dead for 2 years. I’m going to do this now! Love the video, love your channel :)
Good thing you had that dream and found my channel
good idea, was thinking or getting a few. i actually have a few "disposable" vapes with good batteries. you could then encase it in epoxy.
They work great and cost under $30. Well worth it, saved us thousands in equipment that would have been lost and stolen
Most of those disposable vapes use a lithium ion cell, not a lithium thionyl chloride. Lithium thionyl chloride doesnt have enough current to run a vape.
Sweet story with the cat. Please make some annotations in the beginning where you mentioned the wrong pins so people don't kill their tags.
ONE OF THE BEST CHANNEL OF ITS GENRE, I've found anyway... subbed
Thanks !
Hey guys does anyone have an idea what chip to use to toggle power o/I @ 1 hour intervals ?
www.ti.com/lit/ug/tiduap0/tiduap0.pdf?
You can set the sleep timing by changing the resister values. I would do 30 minutes off to make it appear to have left the targets area.
@@peterfairlie2296 Thanks for the share fellow traveler ...
So this ER14505 battery does not lose potential over time? I swear it seems most batteries run down over a couple months.
I've been anti apple since the iPhone came out, but I have to admit the air tag ecosystem is revolutionary.
If they allowed it to work with Android I'd agree with you.
@@PaulKeppler why should apple do googles work for them?
iPhones are probably the worst Apple device ever.
I really like my AirPods and MacBook Pro (ports are back, Apple actually listened to users)
smarttags from samsung (which apple copied) are better.
@@izoyt both copied tile
In Seattle I don't think Grand Larceny is a crime that gets any jail time
The thing is you need someone with an iPhone to be around, and the person probably also need to have the Airtag Network feature enabled. Or are there other devices contributing to the coverage already?
All iOS devices are part of the Find My Network by default. Most users have no idea their device is contributing ... thanks Apple for you LOL!
@@peterfairlie2296 ok so for most cases it should be ok or at least "better than nothing" 😀
the issue with gps active devices is then the higher power consumption. - but still you already have devices like paj gps with integrated sim card, which you can "hardwire somewhere in and forget them" - then when needed you just activate / pay in the portal and they can log into celluar and work even somewhere remotely
Use IN100 NanoBeacon. Then you can set it up the way you want. It's cheaper as well.
You could in addition attach a latger antenna for better distance reach and an even lower power consumption...
The antenna length can't be a random length. Making it longer will not necessarily increase the range. Those are usually 1/4 of the wavelength. The optimal length for 2.4GHz will be 125mm. But increasing the range of an Airtag will decrease its location accuracy.
Thanks bro I have electric vehicles I'm makeing to rent out to people
i could have sworn i've seen this video earlier last year.
i've done something similar with concealing the circuitboard on something else. if you hide it inside another piece of electronics with 3 or so volts you can also solder it inline.
I love it, squirrel is hungy
Awesome video! I was able to find batteries with the more typical AA positive so no plastic trimming is required. Threw the tag in a fat piece of heat shrink and glued it to the battery holder for a neat little tracker. Amazing!
More cool stuff! Extending lifetime of the air tag. Nice video again Peter.
iOS*
Oh, my Pkcell
AH MY PKCELL!!
Lol. Seattle.. "Still in jail...." bwhahahhahahaha. The channel is switching to comedy now.
Had had multiple warrants. He was a bad dude they were looking for... I think he's in for a while all thanks to the AirTag LOL!
Even if you disable a speaker it is still possible to locate AirTag using precise finding (available on iPhone11 and later).
Actually it is possible to create an AirTag clone tracker which will be not detectable by phones automatically (iPhone will not notify you).
So it there are significant demand it is possible to start manufacturing.
"What I avtually do." Yes im wondering what you actually do or more so what is this equipment that yall send all over yet seems only to be in a hanful of places like NYC, LA, Paris, London, and central america..... Hmmm thats an interesting list.
Peter, how does one get in touch with you with a business inquiry? The address in your description comes back undeliverable as does your gmail address.
i seen your first video thought it was a great idea for motorcycle anti theft a big problems great work
Some phones including android devices now have the ability to alert users to the presence of air tags.
I've tested this on Android and it didn't seem to work very well... very hit & miss.
Definitely works,, when my iPhone battery runs out, samsung phone starts nagging me about the airtag because the iPhone is no longer keeping the anti stalker feature silent anymore on the airtag (believe it just keeps changing the id if owners iPhone is in range)
but the power cycle every 1 hour is neat work around (only risk is when iphone automatically does firmware update when it power cycles the airtag it has a extremely small risk of it bricking the airtag) , but ones out in the world won't update unless airtag owners/your phone is nearby
It's good this it can actually handle 3.8v ( definitely save this video)
A one-amp GMA fuse in line with the red wire, inside the battery case, might be a good idea just to keep down the possibility of a fire if a short in the power wiring occurs.
If they are Lithium thionyl chloride cells they can only provide a peak current of 200mAh or so.
@@samthenerf That is good, but I'd still fuse the line, perhaps a 100mA fuse then.
Does the tracker stop working if there is a short? If fuse pops tracker is dead
@@TheTAEclub that's true. But it's better than having a fire.
Thank you for sharing !!! I was wondering how this could be achieved !!!
Glad it was helpful!
I use non apple mfi trackers in vehicles due to lacking precision tracking. makes it hard for thiefs to pinpoint in vehicle.
Actually the more tracking devices you can place in your vehicle the better. If they find one they are likely going to stop there thinking that's it.
Use all 4 or 5,, airtag, smarttag 2, Google network version of the pebblebee tag (not very good at the moment) , active GPS tracker (every 15 seconds) , low jack type tracker (mobile/GPS is only active when marked as lost so can't be found with mobile sniffer until you mark it as lost, wakes up every 8 hours for 30 seconds to check in to see if this lost if not goes back to sleep)
Also if your using airtag for lots of devices they increased the device slots to 16 (Basicly 14 or 15 available as phone uses a slot, airbuds can use 2 or 3 (left+right+case if newer buds) believe it was 10 before
Samsung smartthings app limit is 200, the max connected in range is about 10-16 (as these are low power devices)
btw... your laptop, the MS surface is absolutely unrepairable. The only way to open it is to melt and cut plastic. I had one, failed to post. Dead, no way to even inspect the motherboard on what went wrong.
I would recommend returning it if you can.
There is a way to open them. The secret is isopropyl alcohol.
@@peterfairlie2296 love your approach to thinking and problems... my kind of guy
if i remember write a 555 timer on and off at intervals so it stops signal notification by cutting the power to the tag' i talked to a couple of people great minds think a like lol
thanks
You're welcome!
you can get those same battery holders with on/off switch, for 18650 batteries instead. No modifications needed and lots more battery capacity at 3.7v
No, do not use18650 lithium Ion rechargeable batteries. 18650 have a high self discharge rate of about 3% every month. Use only lithium thionyl chloride batteries as I specified if you want a 10 year stability.
@@peterfairlie2296 ah right, forgot about the self discharge rate. Then how about just taking of these D cell ones by jauch quartz. (ER34615J-T D) 19Ah worth of juice. ^_^. they have solder tabs so you can just wire them straight into the apple airtag, with a small power switch on the positive line, and shrinkwrap the whole thing together. Sure, not as neat as this solution, but would bump it up to "you will die before the battery dies" level.
More like 3-4 yrs (at best)
Chemistry bro
the squirrel likes blue jolly ranchers
I have 3 air tags in my custom truck all powered off the truck using a 3.3v regulated power supply. All 3 are hidden where you have to disassemble parts of the truck
Excellent idea!
@@peterfairlie2296 I am anti-Apple. But Airtags were the best choice. So invested in a few and an iPad just for this purpose
I wanna do the same video like this on my second channel
I'd be interested in how to setup an interrupt.
Some advanced drug dealer stuff
Never trust a black squirrel!
if space and hiding is not a concern, then i've also seen regular premium duracell D batteries in series used to power low power devices for around the same amount of time (10 to 15 years). generally, the batteries will fail before they run out of juice i think. D cells are massive though and 4 or 5 in parallel is a lot lol
Really neat! Great idea. Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
This is insanely cool.
Nice and informative video, kinda unfortunate that in a scenario like this you need to rely on "Big Tech", but what are alternatives? Sim card for every tracker with GPS and SMS?
What I like about the Air Tags is they are really low cost at $30 and there is no perpetual operating cost. In my experience the whole system worked really well and the investment was recouped 10 times over with the first lost shipment we recovered.
@@peterfairlie2296 Yep, kinda scary to think about cost and burden of SIM card solution in even medium scale deployment.
@@red007master2 Nice thing about AirTags is it's using the relay devices connectivity no matter where they are in the world and what cell provider they are using, plus WiFi, and even Starlink / Satellite.
@@peterfairlie2296 LOL, my mind did not connect that SIM will work only (mostly) in origin country.
So even more minuses to the alternative.
That wildest place I've seen these AirTags send me tracking hits back from was within passenger aircraft in flight. Somehow the Bluetooth signal makes its way into the passenger cabin and someone's iPhone picks it up and relays it back using the in flight WiFi.
Air tags are worthless if the speaker isn’t removed. The notification is also an issue of course. A stolen beeping equipment will stop beeping and tracking when the thief remove the battery. 😂
Dont think my cat would like that battery strapped to him, nice mod though :)
gods work
Strap that thing to a cat lol
I knew i was subscribed to your channel for a good reason
iOS ...
click bait title stealth GPS tracking would be GPS tracking that only reports to you with all the kings horses and all the kings men not able to break the encryption of the location of the item being tracked. passive GPS can be hooked up to something... that uses the local internet without a record... perhaps not legally...
OK, what ever you say LOL!
So we know for sure the 3.7v battery (which is 4.2v when fully charged) doesn't fry the airtag?
This is a 3.7v Lithium-Thionyl Chloride (Li-SOCl2) Battery. This is NOT a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. It's a one time use battery. They are commonly used in 10 year smoke detectors.
you probably shouldnt but if you sand the positive of the battery slightly you could put some solder onto it to make the nip like a normal battery, Warning to anyone doing this in ref to safety do not over heat the battery, if done correctly only take a second to do..
You can't solder to these batteries, they are stainless steal. Also heating a lithium battery is a really BAD idea LOL! They do however have a version of these batteries with a terminal tab spot welded to the stainless steal that you can solder too. The battery cases are like $2 on amazon.. and have a switch which is helpful when testing the tag.
Where are you that has black squirrels?
Toronto, Canada. We have lots of them and they are really crazy & funny too: th-cam.com/video/kNLlvTB5zHs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=44Jfy0TqxQtbCzc6&t=693

Can Tile Pro Trackers do this m8 ? I'm asking because I am an Android user and not an Apple user but would like to try this out very much myself.
Edit: hmm...
In the unlucky event that your car gets towed or stolen, you can count on the global Tile Network to have your back. Instead of freaking out about your lost car, just activate your vehicle as lost on the Tile app. Then, every phone running the Tile app will automatically and anonymously start scanning for the lost Tile in your car. If someone with the Tile app goes by your vehicle, you’ll instantaneously get an alert with your car's latest location. This can help you or the police recover your vehicle.
That's totally different to how Airtags work right? I'm guessing the answer to my first question is NO haha ok hmm but I don't use Apple I never have.
I haven't looked at Tile Trackers yet but they basically work the same way. I'm sure you could also wire in an external battery too.
thats exactly how airtags work
also you can also use android devices to track airtags. They have a n official app im pretty sure
@@till7253 I thought Airtags work by pinging ALL Apple devices nearby ? Tile Trackers only ping other users who have the app so nothing like each other really right ?
Yes that is correct and why I used Air tags. All Apple users are opted into the Find My Network like it or not. As for Tile they will only be relayed if the user has the Android app installed.
@@peterfairlie2296 Ok thought so m8 thanks for clearing that up for me. Maybe I will have to buy a cheap iphone. ;)
Covid protocol enbeded into both apple and android to proxity report for contact tracing always gonna be a disasder or bonus depending on your usecase. Good info
What do you mean by its running in stealth mode? How did you disable the speakers? Greetings
The speaker becomes disabled when you remove the back cover. The plastic back has a magnet in it and it acts as a speaker. Because I wired into it directly I don't use the back cover again which disables the speaker and sound.
That's not GPS tracking.
So your invention is extending airtag battery life.....?
You must be a genius!
I can tell from the videos on your channel that you surely could have done better. Not sure why you feel the need to come talk shit to random people. Your life must be pretty shitty.. I feel sorry for you.
