Unbelievable Coleco Didn't test the games before production. I love Coleco games but these are not my favorite games. I hope this can be modified for additional games. Great review Jon!
It's the first time I've heard of something like this happening and I'm sure it wasn't cheap to ship all those boards out to backers 😬. Thank you so much for watching my friend.
I remember those 80's sets. Memories. God Bless!
I wonder if that Top Racer could be modified ?
Having a wheel in a small tabletop form factor, would be awesome for some mini Outrun games, ChaseHQ, Pole Position, etc...
I've personally not tried to mod it, but I'm also wondering the same. I think there would be a good chance that it could using something like the Pi Zero W.
Appreciate the video, quality work as always my friend! A little bit from my experience, so when my replacement board was mailed from Coleco for my Berzerk, the replacement card came with the identical left-side cut off even though it HAD the "Berzerk" white label on it (which is supposed to mark it as the "fixed" board). After notifying Coleco, they sent me another that arrived just a few days later and was perfect.
I also purchased a 2-pack after making an offer (and was going to sell the duplicate or give it to a friend), and that came with two replacement boards. While Frenzy's board was fine, the Berzerk one was missing the BATTERY HEADER on the board! Just the gold pins were there for soldering, but no white PORT! Contacted them via eBay, and they send me out a replacement that worked perfectly. So with a little patience, I now have all working units but it was unfortunate the amount of issues these had for me! Hopefully the units going forward avoid these issues! Thanks Jon!
Thank you for watching and sharing your experiences, my friend! Oh wow, that is an unfortunate series of events to get them all working. If Coleco plans to make more units in the future, they really need to improve their QA processes. I've been pleased with their overall response (that shouldn't have been necessary). These type of issues could have easily been corrected at the factory by just performing a simple functional test before boxing them up.
Really wish they’d put multiple games on one unit.
It would be pretty awesome to have a mini multi-cade in this form factor (similar to the GRS Build-A-Cade wagnerstechtalk.com/grs-bacv1 ). One of the first things that came to mind is popping in a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W. If there is interest in this thing, may do it.
That’s a great idea Jon
interesting. wasn’t bleem the first playstation emulator on cd from 25 years ago? i wonder what the connection is to top racer on SNES?
Yes, you're exactly right! Not sure if there is any connection between the two. It will be interesting to see what content shows up on bleem.net
im interested to know what the top racer reedeem code thing is about
that it doesnt have an internet connection so i cant see how that would ever be functional
The low effort that went into this isn't surprising given the history of "modern Coleco". I suppose the fact they shipped anything at all is considered a win when expectations were already so low. Seriously, did anyone during the Kickstarter ask "why is the screen so small" or "is it the actual arcade rom" or "will there be a mode to emulate the original LED tabletop?" or "couldn't the control panel be even remotely close to the original instead of using an existing generic one?". There are so many better mini-arcade repros (including for Beserk and Frenzy!) that blow these away it's not funny.
Yep, there is the GRS Build-a-Cade that allows you to install whatever you want. New Wave Toys has released Berzerk + Frenzy (available for purchase) and other options such as using a Pi 3/4/5, etc. and dozens of others. But, there is something I find very intriguing about seeing the Coleco logo on an item shipped in 2024. Yeah, I know it's not the same Coleco we knew back in the 80's but it's something interesting to think about. Even more interesting if they continue the product line. Thank you for your feedback, definitely appreciate it!
What a total waste of money.
I appreciate your feedback.
