Yeah, unfortunately that happens a lot with people on prednisone. But take comfort in a couple things: 1. It's likely temporary - there's a good chance that once you're off prednisone, part or all of the weight will go away 2. The majority of it is water weight - not fat
I took high dosage of pred for 3 months, always had a 6 pack gained 20 lbs, I work out 4-6 days a week pretty intense. And still weight the same. I eat really clean. Im fighting a losing battle but it is what it is.

How about 5 mg of it. I’ve been in 10-20 mg. I gained lots of weight. That was 5-6 years ago. I lost most of the weight. Now after 6 years the dr put me on it again for only 3 days for experimental to see what type of arthritis I have. I want to know if I only took the minimum of 5 mg. Are side effects much less on that amount? It helps me so much. Even on 5 it tastes my heart rate. I heard it can be hard on your heart. I will never go on anything higher than 5mg. 10 mg raises my heart rate and blood pressure. I know it seems like it’s an easy answer but this is about being able to physically function with a normal day. Without it I can’t work thx so much
Generally speaking, side effects increase with dose and duration, so if you're using a lower dose, for a shorter duration, that should minimize your side effects.
i took about 10 prednisone pills as a teen 5 in December and then later in January, I gained most of the weight on my cheeks and jawline and i have been exercising and dieting and barley seen any progress, will the fat on my face ever go away?
Chromium! I will try it! I’ve been on a high dose of prednisone for lupus for the last few months. In that time I haven’t gained weight, but using an InBody device, my body fat has gone from 14% to 21%, and I’ve lost about 3 kilos of muscle. Honestly, I’m more concerned about the muscle going away than gaining fat. I wonder if the catabolism also takes protein away from organs like the liver or heart as well, not just skeletal muscle. In any case, regardless of increasing protein intake and doing aerobic exercise every day, the muscle to fat conversion just keeps progressing. So far nothing I have tried has stopped it. Each month I measure my body composition, I have more fat and less muscle. I know I need the prednisone for treatment, but the change to my body composition despite my best efforts is disheartening. My HbA1c also went up from 5.0 to 5.7 (so far - it will probably be higher the next time) so yes, prednisone has made me an instant diabetic. I’m avoiding refined carbs and eating higher protein, and doing aerobic exercise (walking) after most meals, but again, the numbers are the numbers. I will try the chromium and check out the research paper you talked about. I really hope it works.
Thanks for sharing. I'm sorry that prednisone has had such a negative effect on your body. We wish it treated the lupus without any side effects. If you do try chromium, I'd love to hear your experiences.
@@FitnessSolutionsPlus I ordered chromium supplements and they should arrive in a few days. I'll try to remember to give an update in two months or so. I wish doctors would know about ways to deal with the side effects, too -- If it works, great, and it's good that people like you are posting information about it and that I was able to find it, but honestly doctors should be advising people to take these supplements rather than just giving them insulin shots and saying "nothing we can do about it." It really feels like doing a deal with the devil.
By the way, I also see supplements called "GTF Chromium" with the message "supports healthy glucose metabolism" -- what is the difference between this supplement and chromium picolinate? I suppose they are different molecules, but are they used for different conditions?
...and one more thing I thought about, is it possible that chromium interferes with how prednisone works? It would be great if it reduces the side effect of higher insulin resistance, but it would defeat the purpose if it interfered with how the drug worked. I suppose the drug causes its problems by upregulating gluconeogeneis causing muscle catabolism leading to higher blood glucose. But if the cells don't need that extra glucose, what is reducing insulin resistance going to do? Hmm...
@@karlint39 very thoughtful question! I checked for interactions between chromium and prednisone, and couldn't find any, indicating that likely there's no negative impact of chromium on prednisone's activity
It is interesting that different hormones are responsible for different areas of of fat deposit/ accumulation.
