if you really think about it, they keep "urban" music and pop separated too allow "urban" music to constantly be disrespected and over generalized by others who arent "urban". specifically Pop Artist who critique Hip hop. a good example is Post Malone and Billie, POP Artists critiquing and putting down Hip Hop aka Urban music WHILE using aspects of urban music and style. so if you allow Black POP artist into the POP space, well frankly it would be difficult for people to bash them for their "Urban" style of Music, when Urban music today is POP music. Hip Hop or "Urban" music has influenced POP music yet people cant see that. plus their would be a lot of Black artist winning POP music, and rich white people dont like that type of Competition.
It feels like the Grammys is a-for lack of a better term-"Boomers show". Or old people who are so caught in their ways they still use terms like "urban" and think all black artists are rappers and cant possibly do anything else. I hope they atleast drop that category in the future. Also this reminds me of how Tyler had to defend himself from being put in a box beforehand when people said he was nothing but "horrorcore", and he evidently broke away from that. It’s hip hop, with many other influences. Would have loved seeing it in other category’s tho that it deserved to be in.

I think there comes a point where I like to call rappers artists when they get a new sound or go in different genres cuz I think the word "rapper" traps alot of other rappers inside a compact box and so when they change their sound I get a sort of deep respect for that artist.

Volksgeist, the 'urban' actually derives from radio in the 1970's classification of it. The Grammys didn't invent or create the term but radio stations that played in metropolitan area did (such as Quiet Storm subgenre in Washington DC).
