I'm super surprised NOBODY has mentioned this - but the Mac Mini Server (mid-2010) - model A1347 ID: Macmini4,1 actually does NOT have the user-friendly way to open it (no dots, etc like shown at the beginning) I'm staring at one now. It was the server - so this model was not considered user-upgradable.

      Hey Joey,
From 2010-2012 the cover should have the 2 "dots" that will help you open up the MacMini. It could be that you may of received a 3rd party cover with your MacMini. All Mac mini are customer upgradable some installation are more difficult than others. If you reach out to us we can help out.

@@poweredbyowc so I have the model without the optical drive. No dots, no thumb buttons - but with Mac mini cut into the plastic. It’s definitely not third party. You have to simply pry it open with a spudger - the wifi “puck” is on the full metal cover underneath - not on the lid. And there is no user-upgradable ram inside. It’s the server model.

The only MacMini that requires a pry tool is the 2014 MacMini and the memory is not upgradeable. You can always use either MacTracker (you can download through the Apple Store) or everymac.com and enter your serial number and confirm what MacMini you have.
