I love how humans just... compliment animals. They can't understand it, but we like getting compliments so we give them to animals.

I'm aware that they read the tone. My point was that we could say ANYTHING in that tone, but we choose to say nice things.
Doesn’t matter so much what you say. It’s the tone. They might not understand the exact meaning of a word, but if you say it often enough to them, they understand that it means something nice.
Every time we say something it transmits how we feel. I am convinced that the animals I had, understood when I was giving them verbal love and appreciation. At first they learn the tone is positive. In time they learn to read it better and better. Positive feelings and energy that comes from light are well translated in all beings. They do understand your intentions even if they don't get the definition of the word exactly.

@@Zezeze. They CAN, but that was not the case here. This elk had no interest once he saw she had no treats. It called out whatever because probably group leader, probably telling his group to keep moving. Only one way to discourage any danger is to ban people from these areas or at very least, not allow them to stop for interaction.

It is never a good idea to touch a wild animal. They can carry tics, bacteria in their fur, viruses, parasites, etc. Especially meat eating animals like racoons. Some wild racoons will come up to people in tourist areas. Plus the chance of rabies from certain animals.

@@Gfors85 as a BIOLOGIST, I can tell you, this is what elk sound like. It’s only male elk that usually perform this call. This is called a Bugle, and bull elk do this to claim territory or female elk herds. It can also be a warning call. It’s a very context dependent call. I’ve heard elk do this in person as well. And if that’s not an elk, what you implying it is? A caribou? That’s not what bull caribou look like either, or any caribou for that matter. It’s not a moose. It’s definitely not a species of deer if we look at antler structure. Look up “elk bugle” and you’ll get many results of this exact call from elk.

Elks are amazing creatures. When I was in boy scouts, we hiked up in the mountains here in northern Utah, and the first morning, when I went out to do my business, there was fog in the air with the sun just peeking over the tops of the mountains, and standing in lush grass with the sun streaming through its antlers was the most majestic buck I had ever seen. It was like being witness to a manifestation of a primordial god of the everlasting hills. They still hold me in awe. Very kingly animals.

Elk is part of the deer species. Definitely have to be careful of them. Wouldn't want to be around one during mating season.

As a Ranger, I've sadly seen and dealt with the aftermath of many naive tourists that mistake the great outdoors for Disneyland or a petting zoo.. Such incidents happen way more often than most people realize. Even regular ol' whitetails send people (and very often their dogs) to the ER.
