DEAR WSL- thx for this AWESOME HEAT in some real WAVES! One of the best ones i've seen in Brazil. But DEAR JUDGES - WTF? Last RIde by KS was way underscored and way more critical than Toledo's ride.
Great to see Brazil serving up some Hawaiin looking waves of power and tubes. It validates its place on the tour schedule (from a condition perspective). Obviously I understand Brazil has a huge surfing population, fan base and increasingly great talent pool. And what a great heat that was!
Are you out of your mind did you just start surfing? You in no way I can compare this to Hawaii no way shape or form. Perhaps you have never been to the islands
@@macrovigilance two trips is a good start. Always be respectful I probably didn't have to tell you that. I've been 30 yrs going and am still a guest professional or not. Mahalo🤙
The ending was one of the best and only second to the surfing. The way they show respect to one another at the end, that's huge for both of them. Filipe usually rides it into the beach, but this time he stopped to talk with the only other man that can truly frighten any surfer in a heat. You could tell that Kelly's barrel as well as the mythical surfing that makes him Kelly, it had Filipe shaken for a while afterwards. Respect to both for just how they got their respective 9(+) scores, only the best can come close to that in these frothy conditions! 👍🏼🤝
Slater was always behind that last wave and still managed to lock in a barrel. He wasn't phased at all by the massive drop & was slightly bothered by the thing closing down in front of him. Pretty epic.
Scoring was bad. Kelly's wave was bigger & he got double cover up in one of them, that last ride of Toledo's saw him chasing the section & just managing to get covered briefly. Def ovescored, Kelly should have won that heat but ofcourse he couldn't, right? Politics & money ruin sports 🙅
Put the crack pipe down WSL judges. Kelly's super fast long barrel ride and his gnarly triple overhead monster where he almost got cleaned out twice should have been 9 + 9 at least. Love the surfing from both, but give the win to the contestant who deserved it please.
@@docmartin5375 Well that's actually good to hear. But this is why I prefer a sport like track & field. Aside from the possibility of doping, which is present in pretty much any sport, there's no doubt about the winner (or record-holder). Surfing's reliance on subjective judging puts it in the same class as figure skating and gymnastics, AFAIC.
Agreed. Kelly had great rides, Toledo was scratching around for whatever he could actually surf 'cause he was struggling to get into the barrels. His weaknesses really showed in that heat.
@@jackillin I went back to watch this again. He was totally robbed; I mean,it's like titles don't mean anything because the best surfing is not being rewarded
@@Viva_la_natura I agree. I'm beginning to think it might be all rigged or seriously compromised because of sponsorship money & advertising predominantly aimed towards certain groups.
I don't get the scoring. No way Toledo scored an 8.67 on that. I'm not sure though he didn't win the heat. But it was much closer than the scores would indicate.
Toledo is known as the best small wave surfer in the world, and rightly so. However he has also proven himself in real surf like J-Bay, so he is well deserving of our respect. However I do suspect that he was a bit overscored, especially on his second wave. As for Slater, if the WSL only rewards speed, power and flow, they might want to add gnarly drops on huge waves with recovery to slight barrel. I suspect they would cite Slater's unorthodox stance and lack of smooth transitions between maneuvers for the egregiously low score--almost as if to say "he got lucky on that one, he wasn't really in control". This heat should have been dead even or slightly in Kelly's favor. But that's the way it goes in pro surfing, and Kelly is a great ambassador for the WSL, win or lose. Props to both surfers for putting on a great show in real waves.
In Brasil the judges tend to be biased! Way back some years there was a floater of Adriano or someone which was way overscored... Somehow there is crowdpressure or something. All judges please watch this heat again in 1 year or so and tell me who won.
Amazing heat! Great to see Toledo mature and charge some real waves. However, I think his 2 waves were overscored, and Kelly's were underscored. That barrel was a 10, and Toledo's air was a 7. Best of luck to Filipe the rest of the contest! I would much rather see him win than Medina, Medina has no class.
Judges must be afraid FT may charge the tower again? KS had this heat by far. Period. FT drop and tube ride was nothing vs KS. High 8 for FT and a mid 5 for for KS on the last exchange?
Tell me that this is not true: Felipe 2nd highest scoring wave is like 2.5 points better than Kellys 2nd. Kellys 1st wave is like close to 3 points better than Felipes 1st. -> = Kelly won by slight margin.
Just rewatching. It's clear that Toledo doesn't really know how to get into this barrel, hence he tries a few airs, float and is all over the place etc...Slater uses his knowledge & a few techniques and makes a couple of nice ones, chooses the right wave, and clearly has quite a command of his successful rides and yet Toledo wins? I don't get it. I don't have any bias in countries that are represented, my country hasn't ever had a surfer on the world tour & I quite like & support several of the Brazillian surfers but I can't accept clearly bad bias judging, it doesn't help the sport or the surfing, it's been happening a lot lately. I actually switched it off after that heat, I couldn't be bothered with the BS scoring anymore.
slaters first barrel was good and he was rewarded for it with a 9.5. The second barrel was a difficult airdrop where he missed the first part of the barrel and pulled into kinda a shitty foamy barrel where the lip was kinda landing on him the whole time. Definitely a high degree of difficulty there with the air drop and being hit by the lip but not something the judges have ever rewarded highly so everything checks out IMO. Air drops are difficult to judge because they are often self inflicted by poor positioning and paddling (ie. if he was better positioned in that wave he probably wouldn't have had to air drop). I think the only time judges give big points for difficult airdrops is when someone airdrops directly into the barrel (which slater did not do) and you can easily find evidence of this in other heats
Toledo will win, however once again if he wants to win the title he needs to improve Big Waves surfing.( Finals will be Toledo and Medina I pick Toledo However Medina is more complete)
