Is disconnecting from the server a common thing in POE?

Depends on the server you play on. On Frankfurt it's on average 1 dc for roughly every 12 hours played.

wow that's not rare at all. Does disconnecting make playing Hardcore harder?

Obviously, but most of the time the dc is instant, i,e. not dangerous

This is why I never celebrate drops unless they're in my inventory. I always pick up drops the second they are dropped lol. Tough luck, but you'll get better drops later.
