    this should be the first video you watch in the intermediate throwing playlist.
    In college, after I passed my beginner classes, the whole class was put through a little test. not only to see where we were as artists but also to exemplify why we were beginners.
    This lesson ( the same one I'm showing you today) really taught us why we weren't getting height on the wheel, why our clay was thick and not drying evenly, and why we were struggling with cracks in our clay.
    if you are not yet done with the beginner playlist I suggest you go back and learn those shapes.
    I know many who see this channel as a teaching tool will appreciate this lesson.

    Don’t know if you’re still checking these comments... 63 years old, 45 years since I started my pottery journey. Just got my own equipment and it’s a whole new playlist. This lesson was seriously a missing piece for me. You rock, Dante. You’re quite skilled at teaching pottery... and also goofy.

    I’ve been feeling like I’m still at beginner stage. But this video taught me I’m not. It was just logical to me when I finally got the hang of cylinders that I should pull from the very bottom of the vessel. You’re the best Donte! Thank you so much!

    one essential element is to compress the lip after each pull. it will reduce the likelihood of chipping and keep things centered. also, sometimes when things go a bit wonky, I will throw DOWN. It's not pushing the clay back to the wheel head, but countering the spiral to even things out. wdyt?

    I LOVE watching your lessons! Thank you so much for your generous sharing! I saved the video and plan to "throw-along". I feel like I learned a ton just watching... can't wait to do it in person! Thanks so much again, Dante!

    Really nice lesson , one of the best I saw so far but nobody speaks about the density of the clay, personally I believe is all about the density of the clay.

    Awesome! Thank you. My last teacher used to hover over me reminding me to relax on the last third since I was usually still pulling too hard. Love that you are doing the intermediate series. Thank you.

      Can't wait to meet you and others. Have you been to any other NCECAs? I made reservations months ago. Im glad I did. The hotels were book up in less than an hour. I'm staying close, but not right at the venue. I would love to order a new kiln while there. We will see. My kiln is over 30 years old and manual. I managed to find a used switch last year through a Facebook group. They don't make parts for it any more. Thanks for your videos on setting up your studio. Mine is in the basement. I'm slowly getting things I need.

    I'm still struggling with this. I measure the inside of the cylinder and I notice that the bottom is smaller compared to the top. So that made me realize that I'm not pulling enough. When I cut my piece I can see that my cylinder looks more like a slitly cone. I looked for an explanation from you and here it is 😊

    Hi. When I try to pull my cylinder it starts wobbling

  • @rhondavalverde7219
    @rhondavalverde7219 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was an awesome video! I try to pull aggressive. I press in like you do at the bottom to get that little ridge, I try to get under it to raise that ridge up, but some where it seems to get lost and I don't get as much height. I don't get thin tops usually, I don't pull through the top. Typically I have been using the side of a bent up finger, knuckle, maybe I need to use the tip of why finger instead?

    • @EarthNationCeramics
      @EarthNationCeramics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds like a consistency issue, keeping the same strength throughout your fingertips all the way through the clay body.

    • @EarthNationCeramics
      @EarthNationCeramics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would suggest using your fingertips if you are still in the beginner phase simply because of knuckle pulling, while comfortable, is a little more sensitive for your fingers. Your knuckle doesn't have as much sensory information going through the hand as would your fingertips.
      This way you can actually feel what's going on with the clay as you pull it

    • @rhondavalverde7219
      @rhondavalverde7219 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Donte! Makes total sense. I will try finger tips.

    I have a question for ya, if you have a clay that is say cone that is to be bisque to cone 05, can you use a glaze on it that is say cone 5 or 6, or do both have to be the same? I have asked this question to so many site and have not gotten an answer. Thanks in advance for any help. by the way I love to watch your videos. I have learned so much from you.

    • @EarthNationCeramics
      @EarthNationCeramics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're supposed to bisque your Pottery before you glaze it.
      It should say on the package or bag with the max temperature is of the clay.
      So for example if you get a bag of cone 5 b mix, this means you can only go up to Cone 5 but regardless you must bisque before you glaze it.

    • @flipper123tlc
      @flipper123tlc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes i understand this, my question is after it has been bisqued fire to the appropriate temp. Can you a glaze to a differnt temp than what the clay was fired at
