Ep 122 HOW-TO East Broad Top Machine Shop, Broad Top Mountain Models

- How-To build for Broad Top Mountain Models kit, created by Banta Modelworks. It is prototypical of East Broad Top's machine shop at Rockhill Furnace: their main shop and yard.

- Kit is well organized, with walls and roofs grouped in separate bags.
- Instructions suggest mounting the structure to a 2'x4' MDF panel.
- The Outhouse section will be used to detail best practices throughout the kit. Assume that each section will use the same best practices unless exceptions are noted. All walls tend to be repetition of the first.
- Adhesives used were Titebond III wood adhesive, 3M Super 77 for battens and metal roofing, or ACC superglue as necessary.
- Micro Krystal Klear was used to attach window material.
- Colors: Flat Liquitex oxide red for exterior walls, with flat white for trim, windows and doors. Rust primer and weathering powders for the roof.
Optional steps include:
- Raised foundation using HO 12" x 12" basswood replicating the foundation, while strengthening the base.
- Interior board by board flooring stained with Hunterline Cordovan Brown. Interior walls Testors Flat Dark Tan.
- Interior concrete service pits repurposing laser cutouts from the kit, and painted with gray craft paint.
- Roof sections can be combined to reduce seams in metal roofing.
- Engine bay doors had interior side bracing matching the prototype.
- Future details could include interior castings, lighting, and window coverings.
Tips:
- Read all instructions before beginning!
- Test fit everything, and lay out pieces in advance to confirm assembly order.
- Use new sharp blade, before cutting, and change often to reduce errors.
- Use clamps, squares, rubber bands, tape etc. for solid glue joints.
- Avoid water based stains to minimize warping. Paint and alcohol stains work best.
- While staining wood, lay flat with weights on top to reduce warping. Flip pieces over periodically while drying.
- Fill gaps with glue, sealer or putty, and sand smooth, before painting.
- Weathering can be very light to extreme, depending on era being modeled, and is always subject to personal taste.
- Always experiment on scrap before weathering actual model.
