Thank you so much, Kitija!!! The sharpest eye and thought as always! Hugest greetings from all Sun Hills inhabitants =) Peaceful vibes are really what we all need and hope for!
Thank you so much! We use the only one we can get here in Valmiera =) stone coal, but not the highest quality I am afraid. It does its job at its best =)
I recycled an axle drive shaft from our local junk yard, If you buy ask your local metal seller for something tough, but not too brittle. I never bought a special metal for such purposes, as it is really easier to find something recyclable where I live.
@@fourgedmushrooms5958 good point, reducing steps is important! When I forge dozens of nails the first step I do is forge all the tapers and cut them off. Then I take the cut-off tool out and forge all the nail heads. This video shows full process of forging a nail (or a couple).
Thank you! The nails are forged from mild steel, that is not good for hardening. But there is actually no need for hardening nails I think, otherwise they become brittle. Sometimes there is also a need to bend them from the other side of the wall, so they should better stay soft.
Thank you! I leave them as they are, but I spray a clear varnish on them, so the colour is just a natural colour after forging. You can use linseed oil as a dark protective layer as well.
Thank you! I made it ages ago as a temporary tool just improvising with measurements, but as we all know nothing is more everlasting than something temporary =) It still surprises me with its durability. The most important thing to remember while forging a nail header is to make sure the hole is slightly wider from the bottom side. I will think about making video about it. Thank you for suggestion!
What a great video, objective and no nonsense, great camera play, very beautiful scenery
Thank you so much for you kind words! Best wishes from Sun Hills!

Nails, probably the biggest single produced item in blacksmithing history!
Yes! Such a small item, but so irreplaceable in our homes! Really good starting project for any aspiring blacksmith! Greetings from Sun Hills!!!

عمل رائع وجميل
Great video guys 😊 what kind of coal are you using?😊
Thank you so much! We use the only one we can get here in Valmiera =) stone coal, but not the highest quality I am afraid. It does its job at its best =)
What kind of steel would you recommending for making a nail header, assuming I have to buy it, not recycle it from an old car etc.?
I recycled an axle drive shaft from our local junk yard, If you buy ask your local metal seller for something tough, but not too brittle. I never bought a special metal for such purposes, as it is really easier to find something recyclable where I live.
great video- how many could be made in say an hour?
Thank you! In a peaceful manner around 40 pieces of this size I would say.
Why not use the pritchle hole?
Hardy hole somehow works better for me with this specific nail header.
@@SunHillForge so make a cut-off tool for the pritchle hole then!
Not a diss just trying to reduce the steps.

Sweet! Do those nails need to be hardened?
Thank you! The nails are forged from mild steel, that is not good for hardening. But there is actually no need for hardening nails I think, otherwise they become brittle. Sometimes there is also a need to bend them from the other side of the wall, so they should better stay soft.
@@SunHillForge Thanks very much!😊
Wow very pleasant and instructive pleasant video 🤩👍👍
do you leave your nails this way, or do you quench them? How do you make them black
Thank you! I leave them as they are, but I spray a clear varnish on them, so the colour is just a natural colour after forging. You can use linseed oil as a dark protective layer as well.
very nice, can you show us how you made that heading tool?

@@SunHillForge thanks so much, I look forward to see it.
Agree, that would be a good video to make
@@ArmySoldier1972 I will keep the heading tool in mind!
