Blacksmithing : Hand Forging Belt Buckle
I am sharing the process of hand forging a belt buckle, using traditional methods of blacksmithing, side draft forge and stone coal. Really love its solid original look!
I love the idea of using a usual nail for the buckle pin and tongue. The buckle was made for 40mm wide belt.
I used a rounding hammer, a smaller hammer would be useful for riveting. Smaller tongs or pliers to hold the piece, improvised jig for buckle shaping (a square tube) and blacksmith vise. Cut off chisel, punch and a file. No power hammer is needed for this project.
Hope that this video could be helpful or entertaining for blacksmith enthusiasts as well as for craft loving community or just any person interested in how metal craft is made! If you are inspired to forge such type of belt buckles, please let us know about your results!
We hope you will find out something new about blacksmithing and enjoy your visit to our small countryside workshop! It is great to hear that our videos seem to have calming and relaxing effect! =) We really like the original sounds of our smithy, we use a microphone RØDE for sound recording. So all the sounds in our videos are recorded in our workshop and around it. Relaxing sounds and calming yet organized atmosphere are inevitable parts of what we hope our videos should feel like.
If you like the video, please, let us know by leaving a like - your kind support is always so motivating!
You are very welcome to find the Belt buckles as well as other forged items at our online shop!
Stay safe! Stay motivated! Spring greetings from Sun Hills!

Now that's cool, using the forge in addition to knives. I want to make knives and an ax for myself, a sickle too, but I want to do smaller everyday things. Steel or iron are really cool, I was surprised to learn that the swords are not tempered, they must be very hard, I want to test this in the future, make things only in iron, or in steel without tempering (google translate is being stupid. I'm saying that swords do not have the lowest temperature oven process after the high temperature thermal shock. Of course, they were tempered, but Google is not differentiating the two words and translated both to tempered.) It must be better with low carbon if it is going to be made like older steel. Another cool thing is that ancient steel is almost something like alchemy, mixing iron with bone and/or horn powder, pretty cool, right? And God is very wonderful, we have iron everywhere, God is very good, I always think about how great it is that we have cheese, why would milk turn into cheese? Of course, 14-year-old atheists will say "oh, of course yeast must exist and it's possible to take water out of things", but whoever made every atom, every physical law, every biology, and made it so easy to do Cheese is something that exists only for humans? There is no use for chance, evolutionism or etc. for cheese to exist, it is simply a divine gift, just like metallurgy.
What a great video, objective and no nonsense, great camera play, very beautiful scenery
Thank you so much for you kind words! Best wishes from Sun Hills!
Hello new subscriber and fellow TH-camr. I am wondering if you can please post a video of your crochet hook process we would really love to see that in our community. Thank you so much.
Hello! =) Yes, we are thinking to make a short video of forging our crochet hooks. The process is not too complicated but quite patience consuming, yet meditating. No molds used =) just hands =)
@@SunHillForge That’s impressive! And yes, I’ll bet it takes patience. Just discovered your crochet hooks late last night while scouring the internet for stainless steel hooks; your forge is so interesting 🧐 haven’t seen anything like this, and have been looking for very specific hooks for a while! Would really love to see how these are made there, will definitely stay tuned for a video! Checking out your other projects in the meantime 👀 😀
Simple. Elegant. Beautiful. Nicely done.
Thank you so much! Best wishes from Sun Hills!
I really liked the project, I subbed.
Thank you! Welcome! =)
Amazing work! It looks so bad ass
Thank you very much! Glad you like it! Greetings from Sun Hills!
Why not use the pritchle hole?
Hardy hole somehow works better for me with this specific nail header.
@@SunHillForge so make a cut-off tool for the pritchle hole then! Not a diss just trying to reduce the steps.
@@fourgedmushrooms5958 good point, reducing steps is important! When I forge dozens of nails the first step I do is forge all the tapers and cut them off. Then I take the cut-off tool out and forge all the nail heads. This video shows full process of forging a nail (or a couple).

Thank you!

Thats crazy. I was just thinking about how you would forge a belt buckle a couple days ago and suddenly my feed is blessed with your video. Would you mind sharing how long this project took you? Its always interesting to me to hear how much effort goes into somebodies work :D great video!
This is how the info-sphere works =) Happy to bless every time =) Forging a buckle like this usually takes around two hours at a calm pace. But when you start filming - it can take a day =) Greetings from Sun Hills!

@@mistyleo1757 Thank you for your kind words! Happy that you find them helpful!
Solid smithing and great video work. For a minute there I thought, those aren't hooks those are cleats, but then you split them! Ha!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I thought it would be cool to share a little different approach of forging hooks)) Glad you liked it!
This is the first time I have seen the pin to keep the ring from turning. So simple and obvious, but I never thought of it. Thankls for the video.
Thank you so much! In some projects it is really annoying that the ring moves around when it doesn't need to)) Takes a little more work, but the result is worth it. Glad to share some ideas. Greetings from Sun Hills!
excellently done.
