I had just joined the Marine Corps and being a black dude it was strange at that time to see someone like me jamming to this but I was always ahead of time when it came to music. And this just set me into a zone I didn't want to go out of. Today at 64 when I'm riding and it comes on I love it when that road is right when the weather is great when the tent is full and my mind is clear. I just go to that zone of yesterday

This song was to the Outlaws what Whipping Post was to the Allman Brothers Band, or what Freebird was to Lynyrd Skynyrd, or what Highway Song was to Blackfoot. Those last song of the night, show ending 15 to 20 minute plus powerful guitar opus songs that all of the great southern bands had in their arsenal. The song that would whip the crowd into an absolute frenzy right before being sent out the door for that amped ride back home. The common denominator with the afore mentioned songs was that no matter how great the studio versions sounded, you could really never truly appreciate just how great the songs were until you saw or heard those bands perform them live with those endless, forever solos added on as they were jammed onstage live for twice as long as they were played in the studio when those albums were recorded.

Alright, Alright, ALL RIGHT ! I've heard enough about it being perfect, & never missing a note. I have, over the course of 2 weeks (actually15 days) have METICOUSLY transcribed the entire 24 odd minute Magnum Opus...(actually I QUIT AT MEASURE 876....the drums I'm slow as hell on, and it became a bit excessive halfway through, ...8 hrs a day ,10 the first 2 days....when the other drummer came in I began getting old...) -of course I included repeat measures for many of the versres and choruses,- I maybe crazy but ain't no schmoo- but did indeed catch a semi-ghosted note at the 20 minute mark, but skip that it might be incorrect. During the drum solo, after the other drummer was going along to accompany the other one ... there is flim-flam that didn't flu....Just forget it... That dang course I took in transcribing...a freakin 36 weeks of Zappa multple measures of 17/8 ,5/4, and 9/8 reggae, Steve Vai in depth, musical nightmare..he did say no one had stayed with it as long as I had. Yeah freakin bullshit cuz thats cartoon music that Sylvester and Wil E. Coyote ...just nevermind. Beep Beep. Road trippin', Vicksburg to Jackson.

The original song is under 10 minutes. So they added alot of notes. Now I know why some bands have 2 drummers. In case one of them cramps up during a 20+ minute song. They can keep the time going till they rub it out.😆 Great song and group.

In March 1976, at Winterland, I was sitting on the floor close to the stage listening to the Outlaws, (who were the middle act between Paris with Bob Welsh, and Lynyrd Skynyrd). As the Outlaws were playing, some rando guy near me asked if they were any good. I was shocked. I said, "Just listen to them!" For me, "Green Grass" was the highlight of the night. They blew me away! For me, Skynyrd did not top them. One of the best live songs ever.

In 2007 we went out to the beach in Long Island NY to see Dickey Betts. Imagine the thrill when I found out the Outlaws were the opening act! As it happened I was with some young people who barely knew what "Southern Rock" was. I said, "Oh, wait for 'Green Grass'".
It's nonsense what they say about short attention spans- you just have to engage mind, body and soul with all your heart...The acoustics were great and the crowd was on their feet screaming. Of course the joy of the song is that the electric guitars go on forever and ever in a series of tidal waves.
Hughie did not disappoint. There was no hiding the fact of middle age in physical appearance. But that 55 year old man blew the roof off. I was stunned by the sheer energy and concentration on display.
So although the news was very sad, it came as no surprise that he was dead of a heart attack a month later.
He's not resting in peace. He's killing it on a stage somewhere.

It's super cool at the 10:18 mark when Hughie wanders over near Billy for a 'Hey, let's do this lick together' moment. This video is some 23+ min long, but it goes by like it's 3 minutes. If I didn't have a job & have to eat & sleep, I could listen to it over & over & over. This is one where they 'gave me the beat, freed my soul & I get lost in their rock n' roll' lol
