  • Most lumpectomy patients receive radiation treatment after their procedure. This reduces the chances of the cancer coming back. Dr. Jay Harness says the evidence is irrefutable. Because every cancer is different there are a few exceptions. These decisions are made on an individual basis with a multidisciplinary team.

What about patients 10 years later? How many of them developed other problems, including cancer years after the radiation? That is what concerns me. My Dad started out with prostate cancer, developed bladder cancer...had radiation treatment and then developed other cancer in his leg that ended up going to his brain. That is my biggest concern. We know that radiation therapy has its own list of problems and I think they need to be fully addressed. How many of these women went on to have other cancers down the road?

What is the cancer recurrence percentage / odds in the same breast if one doesn't have radiation therapy?

@@nancysmith8541 How did that go? Was it left or right side? Side effects? I'm 66 yrs old and will be getting getting chemo session 7 done on Sept 22. Mine was on the left side and I'm so afraid to have radiation done because of immediate and future side effects. Just had a port inserted this past Mon and have had a blood tranfusion in July. Dr just called yesterday and told me my blood count is low again. I hate all of this. I'm so undecided about having radiation and must decide within the next 2-3 wks as they want to set up appt dates should I decide to have radiation.

Laurel McAra hi so sorry about your cancer,
I had it on my left side,
Please eat as much as possible during chemo I ate steak and red meat a lot grass fed meat,
As for chemo try not to take the extra meds that worked for me,
Radiation was so much easier after the first week, kinda tuff to keep still and keep your arms up
But not that many side effects at all,
      I finished on 6-12-20
I just had a check up mana mgram,
Everything was clear, glory to God
      Saying prayers for you!
