My Ruger Mk IV sucked! Sights only useful in VERY bright light. Replaced with Williams fire sights! About $78 shipped. Trigger sucked to hell! Creep like crazy and inconsistent! Replaced with Volquartsen trigger kit. About $113 shipped! And $80 gunsmith fees for installation of above! So figure $271 to make the gun shoot like it SHOULD have from the factory! Ruger, you suck! Knowing what I do now, I would have just bought a S&W model 41 and had a great gun! Ruger, you suck!

Clerk goes to back of store to tell the manager, "There's some moron wanting to buy half a head of lettuce" when he realizes the customer had followed him and is standing right there, so he says, "And this fine gentleman would like to buy the other half".

The Ruger seems a cut above in engineering design. The ease of its disassembly is truly state-of-the-art, a beautiful thing to see. Why it took them a half century and how the new version was achieved would make an interesting story.

The most obvious difference between the Mark series of .22 pistols and other semi-auto handguns is that the barrel is permanently affixed to the receiver. So, instead of a slide that moves and a barrel that tilts, only the blow-back operated bolt moves, much like a semi-auto rifle or carbine.

great video and thanks for the opinion. I have the Victory (one of the first to get one right after SHOT this year). I have nothing but praise for it. Will be getting the metal rail for it from VQ. Glad you highlighted the 98% deal. Most people getting into a 22lr for the first time even with quality ammo don't understand the nature of the beast. I worked in the gun industry for 10 years and always hard to convince people some failures do happen. Just subbed after lurking for a while. Thanks!

I bought a MKIV Hunter; with the wrap around target grips. Upgraded it with all stainless parts available from Volquartsen and Tandemkross. I acquired a second recoil rod and spring assy. and experimented by removing bits of the spring so it will now reliably cycle CCI Quiet 710fps loads, so I just switch them out depending on the loads. Most of this decision making process from the gun I selected up to this point have been based on the content and reviews I've watched from your channel.

I really enjoy my SW22 Victory. I did have ejection issues when new and had to send it back to S&W to fix, but it's been 100% reliable since. And mine came with black sights front/back which was fine, but I ended up getting a red/green dot for the top rail which amped up my enjoyment factor big time. Lastly, the grip is definitely not my favorite part of the pistol. I do have a TANDEMKROSS Hive grip on order that I hope will make it better. All in all, a great plinker! Next on my 22lr list is a Ruger SR22.

I have both the Victory and Mark IV pistols that have be tricked out with TK and Volquartsen parts. The Ruger has the TK and the Victory the Volquartsen. I really enjoyed the builds and really pleased with the outcome. Of the two the Victory is the better shooter. I think the difference in the two is based on the parts. Both weapons were fine shooters before mods. I had better results with the basic Smith due to the better sight picture with the fiber sights. One of the mods to the Mark IV was Fire Sights for the front and rear. I would be hard pressed to choose one over the other. I'm in my seventies so I don't compete with anyone else, I just cut holes in paper as close to each other as I can. My wife suggests that I get a hole punch but I haven't been convinced. When I compare these to the Volquartsen Scorpion or the Model 41 they are all more accurate than I am. Thanks for your demos of the amazing shots that could only dream of.

(Sorry this comment goes to my fellow spaniard).

Came across a "Used" S&W Victory. It was brand new, never fired, however it had been sold at some point. Got it on $50 off used guns sale for a whopping price of 250 out the door.
It was between this and a well used Browning Buckmark for 200, the particular Victory I got has a threaded barrel so I was sold.
Very happy with the purchase, its on par with my 617 for accuracy.

Not quite sure why it took them to Gen 4 but hey, at least they finally fixed it.

I have the Ruger 22/45 Mark IV and it’s fantastic. I’ve had Buck marks, and the Ruger Mark lll, and I can’t say there’s much of a big difference in those either, but the Buck mark needed a tool to take it apart and for that I rate it lower than the Mark lV but higher than the Mark lll, because the Mark lll is a pain to take apart. I’ve never owned a Victory but if it takes a tool to take it apart I would say that alone is going to score it lower than the Mark lV because as you say the thing with a semi auto rim fire is keeping it clean. The easier it is to clean it, the more I’m gonna like it. That’s my opinion and it’s free. 😉

Interesting comparison. I currently have the Ruger Hunter SS model, and have owned many others. But my fall back model is the S&W model 41, hands down. I carried one on the trap line for decades, and it never let me down. The only caveat to, the m41, is that was designed as a target pistol. That means that it was designed to shoot 40 grain bullets, and will do that superbly. If you shoot lighter bullets, you can expect to experience various feeding/extraction problems. Not a lot, but it will happen.

just took my new victory out for the first time this past weekend. I made the mistake of purchasing 200 rounds of the same type of ammo. they were 40 grain CCI's. every single round failed to cycle the next. I had to manually rack the slide to cycle the next round. after 120 rounds I bought a different type of ammo from the range. I can't remember the brand, but they were 36 grains. this new ammo worked flawlessly. had a lot of fun after that. lesson learned....next time I will buy several different types of ammo to see which ones run better

I have a Ruger Mk 3 22/45 and a S&W Victory. I added a aftermarket take down screw which simplified basic tear down for cleaning, so its not as bad as stock. Both guns are very accurate, both are very reliable, since I got the Victory I have shot the Ruger very little. I'm a former Bullseye competitive shooter, I still have my original High Standard target model with the 1911 grip angle as that points better for ME, every person is different on the point ability, so the grip angle is highly personal, but there is a reason why the grip angle of the 1911 is so popular and it is repeated on the Victory, and the 22/45 Ruger I have. However the angle might be better on the 1911, Ruger should have spent more time making the 22/45 grip closer in dimension to the 1911, the Ruger grip, the model with the molded in grip panels is way off, too small compared to the 1911. The Victory grip isn't as big as a 1911 but it fits my hand much better and is more comfortable to shoot, and the soft grip material allows an excellent grip. I have also installed the Tandemkross trigger on the Victory and it is really nice. Everyone has their own opinion, but IMHO the Victory is far superior to the Ruger.

I can load .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .380 ACP and 9mm for less than $5 per box. .40 S&W, 10mm and .357 SIG for less than $6 per box. .45 ACP, .44 Special, .44 Magnum for less than $7 per box. Rifle calibers other than the most common and cheap full cases of Military surplus 5.56x45mm and 7.62x39mm are where you really save the money.
You have to buy your components in massive quantity bulk to save the most money. The guys that buy a pound of powder, 100 bullets at a time and a 1000ct sleeve of primers won't save much. UPS lets you put 70 pounds into Hazmat package. Utilize it to the full potential to reduce costs.

I'm afraid to say but I got a mark3 about 8 years ago I came across a company called Majestic arms and they made a speed strip kit for the mark 2 and 3 and they also had a magazine safty disconnect and I don't know different people feel different things about them but I put the speed strip kit in it was pretty easy and by then I had gotten really good stripping the ruger and getting it back together but with the speed strip after you get out the works from the gun a small pin removes that black bump behind the sight and replace it with the one from the kit looks the same except it's got and Allen head on it and it's a unpolished pin when it's time to break it down put the Allen wrench in the spot for it and turn until it comes out once it's out pull the bolt out and it's ready to clean as far as the mag safety remove all the hardware on the right of the trigger facing forward pull up the trigger replace a thick walsher and replace it with the new one place it back together put the mag in and cook it and see if it fires then pull it out again and charge the bolt and pull it should work fine and it takes about 5 pounds off the trigger and it's and all around better gun.

I just ordered a Mk IV Tactical. I have a older Mk(2?) standard model. By far the most accurate .22 I've shot. Wanted this new one for the heavy barrel, easy cleaning, and most importantly, a threaded barrel. Should go great with my Dead Air Mask. I'm hoping it runs well with subsonics.

Hello Plinkster! Always love your vids and reviews.
For the past 3 years I have been shooting in a local recreational Bullseye league. I do pretty well. In fact, have won both of the last two years and for 24 straight sessions have the high score. My best is a 490/500. We shoot at 25, 25, 50 and 75 ft during each session. Strong hand, weak hand and two hands. I also enjoy long distance shooting with handguns out to and beyond 200 yards.
My primary guns for this type of shooting are a MK3 22/45 that is tricked up with most VQ parts, a GP100 match, and a Walther Q5. All three guns have a Venom red dot (3moa)
I feel a bit as if I have outgrown the MK3. Been considering the following:
    - Volquartsen Scorpion
    - Keeping my MK3 but putting a VQ Upper and Bolt on it.
    - Smith & Wesson Model 41
    - Walther Esse Sport
So why? I want the most accurate setup possible for a reasonable investment (let’s say under $1800). I do want to use the gun for my current league.
So have any opinions to share? Thoughts? I love the idea of going Scorpion. The Esse is a sexy gun and the price is a lot less. Also, it’s unique and I like unique. The 42 well that’s a old classic favorite.
    Thanks!

I like Rugers, but I have the sneaking suspicion that without the Victory, there never would've been a Ruger Mark IV. They've known for years that the difficult takedown was the one thing most owners of the Mark III complained about, yet for years, Ruger did nothing. It was only the fact that the Victory took a huge chunk of their market share that motivated them to bring out the Mark IV. There is still a matter of the large price difference between a stainless steel Mark IV and the stainless steel Victory. My main problem with the Victory is the grip. It's uglier than the grip on the Mark III and Mark IV, and it's too slippery. Fortunately, the Victory is cheap enough that one can get an after market grip which solves that issue. Having to use an Allen wrench to take down the Victory doesn't matter to me because Allen wrenches are easy to come by.

experience makes me reluctant to stick w/Ruger. Looks like this SW22

Great video, Plinkster! I have enjoyed your skills and insightful humor for some time. I almost purchased the Victory, but grew up with Rugers. Now that field stripping is less of an issue.....decisions, decisions. I am a Walther fan, and obtained the PPQ M2 5" barrel in 22LR for cross training. It eats everything, never one failure (honest) after 1000+ rounds of either bulk box or precision ammo, and is quite accurate. It truly fulfills my "plinking" needs in the true sense of the word. While although it is not designed for tack driving finesse shots, I'd love to see your thoughtful review of this frequently-ignored gem. It may be one of the great secrets of the 22LR World! I say Browning Buckmark is the answer. "Ruger's little dirty secret".
"The best way to address the firepower concern is therefore not to try to outlaw or license many millions of older and perfectly legitimate firearms (which would be a licensing effort of staggering proportions) but to prohibit the possession of high capacity magazines. By a simple, complete and unequivocal ban on large capacity magazines, all the difficulty of defining 'assault rifle' and 'semi-automatic rifles' is eliminated. The large capacity magazine itself, separate or attached to the firearm, becomes the prohibited item. A single amendment to Federal firearms laws could effectively implement these objectives".
