  • Ep 09/01, in which the guys punch up their video titles to be a little more click-baity. Also they go into a real deep dive on some of the cooler mechanics in the Osprey Games hit A Billion Suns, which they would know, having written it and all. They talk about the origin of the game's unique mechanics, how some of them work and some other ideas lost along the way.

Mike mentions the early version of A Billion Suns in the video, Leviathans, to follow along you can take a look at it here: 1drv.ms/u/s!Ak821k-rhLdkqXPad...

I know I'm late to the party but that control card for each ship sounds really neat.

Have been really enjoying listening. I have been writing a gritty near future co-op campaign wargame most akin to fallout wasteland warfare and am about to put it on the table for the first time to see what needs work next.
Would love to eventually hear how you go about organizing your rulebook. Also, when working with a publisher what liberties do you give up? Have you had to rewrite anything?
Being a game designer (board game and wargame) is my dream passion job, but it is difficult for me to take the leap. Trying to figure out what to pitch to companies is also difficult, but you have helped me figure it out a bit.

Hopefully I'll pin Mike down on pitching a bit more in a future conversation. I lean towards the self publishing/Kickstarter route, my own pitches haven't gone brilliantly either. Making a full time job out of game design is a hard road, neither Mike or I pay our rent with it.
Osprey have never (as far as I know) made Mike re-write anything, they have ways that they'd like the book to go, but they've never given guidance we haven't felt free to ignore. We'll probably talk about rulebook layout at some point, though that doesn't feel like a fireworks factory of a conversation.
Good luck with your game, let us know how the first playtest goes.

Very interesting to hear the process behind ABS. Can't wait for the next episode. As I haven't found you on SoundCloud yet.
You mentioned Dropfleet, I'm a big fan myself. But I was wondering what you would have done differently?

We're on Anchor, Breaker, Google Podcasts, Pocket Casts, RadioPublic and Spotify at the moment, we're working on wider distribution.
Mike's a bigger Dropfleet fan than I am, I've read it through but not gotten it to the table so I don't think it would be fair for me to weigh in on it properly, but I'd say that the main reason that I haven't gotten it to the table yet is that I don't feel a narrative to the gameplay so I guess I'd try to lean into that.

@@RuleofCarnage yea okay I can see what you mean by narrative. It's more aimed at competitive play. There are a few missions that have it in mind. Especially when combined in a campaign.
