Hey Joey - as a retired (long ago) marine biologist, I'd like to weigh in on your bluefish hypothesis. They are spawned out but I'm not sure that they die as do salmon. When I lived up north, the early arrival bluefish often had the same big head, skinny body shape. The fish had just arrived inshore and were benefitting from bunker and herring spawns. I believe that they fill out and continue along another seasonal pattern. They are always fun to catch, even the little snappers (young of the year). Viktor can cook but I just can't buy into the bluefish banquet!

I'm with Gary. I don't think they die. According to Google they start breeding at 2 years and live for 12 years.

      We see them tear drop
Shaped On the inside waters up in NC. So either spawned out or very hungry from migration.
As for eating. Bleed them and eat fresh. Don’t freeze them.

Thanks for the info Gary! Got a couple of people weighing in on it.

We used to have runs of bluefish like that off the mid atlantic coast and they would also be skinny before they had a chance to fatten up on either pogies or further out on sand eels. The big question is why there are so many down here now?

Wednesday night we caught a few of these between 30-35 inches. Monday night I caught at least 30 of the small ones. They are still hanging around.

The biggest blue I've ever caught was from the north catwalk at Sebastian one winter years ago - about the size of the ones you were catching on this video. Thanks for posting, Joey.

Those are what we in New jersey refer to as 'Racer Blues'. They have a very big head and thin bodies compared to their head. And we get them in the spring starting around mid/late April. What I've always been told is that the reason that they have skinny bodies has nothing to do with spawning but is due to the fact that they migrate from the northeast down to the south east in late fall/winter and do the reverse in spring. Once they reach NJ (& further north) they put on the feed bag and gorge themselves all summer until it's time for them to migrate back south. In addition, I know for a fact that at least here in New Jersey they spawn offshore in the summer as there is usually a 2-4 week period in the summer when the bluefish seem to disappear from inshore waters and those that do remain are very finicky as to what they eat and exhibit spawning behavior. A 'racer' blue that weighs #10 in the spring with will be in the mid/high teens in the fall. I love catching bluefish on topwater. My biggest bluefish to date is a shade over 22 pounds.

I was there for 4 years and they only came inside of the past like that and stayed for a couple weeks inside the pass. But they didn't look like they had the malnourished look

The really big blueys morph into what looks like a thinner variety of amberjack.

I think that size are there every year, but came inshore because the mullet run sucked and we're starving. Those chased all the small blues off; cannibals.
