Tari’s Kitchen
Birla, Zuarinagar, Mormugao, Goa 403726
9689158659; Sundays CLOSED
Google Maps location: maps.app.goo.gl/iNitBKA4zU37j...
Costs we paid: Veg thali Rs 100, bangdo thali Rs 120
To get there, we turned left onto the Dabolim airport highway from Verna on the Panjim-Margao highway. Just after the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan school and the legal research university, we turned left again towards this circle. The left turn here is the Dabolim-Cavelossim road. Turn right here into Zuarinagar, Continue all the way down the road till you reach the last double storeyed structure on your left, The last double storeyed structure is Tari’s Kitchen. You will see the sign clearly as you approach the restaurant. The road widens a bit here and there is plenty of place to park
Up the stairs, we find a simple yet cosy and welcoming space. Besides these tables down here, there are a few more upstairs for when the lunch crowd comes in.
One of the regulars at Tari was happy to see me and Maria covering this place. He said it is the best place in Birla. Nearby there is no special fish thali like the one here. He works nearby and comes daily to Tari to eat.
Maria and I have not seen each other for two weeks, and are catching up on the fun times we had, and of course some gossip. But I am soon distracted by the sight of the plates being prepared for fish curry rice.
It’s almost 1 pm and the place has begun filling up. We say many students from the maritime institutes of Vasco and of course, from the BITS Pilani KK Birla campus. The overflow crowd has started moving upstairs also
Maria’s veg thali has dal, beans bhaji, salad, pickle, batata fodis, papor and chapati. We both also shared the red rice.
My thali has bangdulyos (small mackerels), fish curry, teesrio, kismur, beans bhaji, salad, pickle, rice and chapati
I loved the fish curry. The teesrios were superb. We both really enjoyed the beans bhaji. The pickle was home made, with fresh mangoes, because the mango season has just started .
Unusually for Goa, Maria’s veg thali also had a paneer dish, something which she enjoys very much. Probably because of the cosmopolitan nature of Vasco, which has many central government institutions, and thus residents and students from all over India
While paying the bill, we chatted with Jaikrishna Tari, the owner of Tari’s Kitchen in Birla. It has been running here since 1996, at first on the ground floor. Because of social distancing requirements during the Covid-19 pandemic, Tari expanded upstairs into its current form
Fantastic food
We saw a lot of students and office goers coming into Tari for lunch. In fact the place filled up very quickly after we arrived. And we finished our food quickly also and left to make way for others who were waiting to have their lunch. And some of the people sitting there told us that they come there every day. I must say, there are quite a few small eateries in Birla in Zuarinagar, but Tari is very special among them. Even the regulars were saying, of all the places there, their favourite is Tari
