A simulation of the whole idea would bt nice. With the slow aircraft being third on the sequence or second which would make it way more clear for newbies

If the slow guy is above the fast guy and they’re tied at 10, when exactly do you clear the slow guy for the approach (allowing him to descend) and possibly break vertical sep?

Is it for a visual approach?

@@superking7135 You only clear the slow guy for approach once you have attained lateral (3 NM in this case) separation. This technique is designed to apply in IFR conditions. Visual approaches make it that much easier. This works great small behind small or large.

barry Smith thanks for the response.
If you have a strong wind component where even if you assign a speed (eg 180 kts) to a pilot on final, they may be indicating significantly less (eg 150 kts). How do you account for that when deciding what speed to assign an acft in the downwind (eg of a like type) and exactly when to turn their base?

So I may assign an RJ7 on final a speed of 180 as well as an RJ7 on downwind (5 miles from final) a speed of 180. But I’m seeing the guy in final doing 150 while the guy on the downwind is doing 200.
Let’s just say that in calm wind conditions, I’d turn base abeam the final acft. When would you turn the base if there’s a headwind as in the example above?
