  • Guard llamas? Really? You bet! Top AI Angus breeder Shirley Williams of Fair Oaks Farm near Van Buren, uses llamas to protect her registered seed-stock Angus. Llamas have an instinctive dislike for canids, like wild dogs and coyotes. Shirley loves her llamas and hasn't lost a single calf since they began guarding her herd 10 years ago.

Another farmer said his llama's will use their back legs to gut the attacking animal and they can also grab them with their teeth and hold them while they use their front hooves which he said are claw like and rip them to shreds...

Love the story. The Llamas are great guardians but don't forget about Donkey's. They are really awesome as well. Donkey's will send most dogs, coyotes, etc. running...... usually in a bit of pain. I wonder if you got Donkey's and Llamas both at a young age, to guard your herd, if anything could ever get near your animals??

When I was a kid, I tried to cut through a couple yards from the bus stop... I saw a Llama and I thought "oh, cute"... I was looking down for clover or dandelion or something to feed it so I could hug it and cuddle it. Then I looked up and the Llama was giving me gorilla murder eyes and it was very obvious that I wasn't wanted.

Hi! Thanks for your video. Very clear. As we are starting to have increasing problems with wolves in our area attacking sheep en calves, I am very interested in that study of Iowa University. Could you maybe pass me a link to that report? Thanks a lot in advance.

Llama’s don’t bond with goats as well as they do with sheep and cattle.

Is there any specific type of llama you’d recommend? Some seem woolier than others, some are white, some are multi-colored. Are these breeds or sub-breeds of llamas or are they all the sale?
Sounds like gelded males are a good sex choice.

Lama and donjey are great. They are super with their warning system as well.
But. Farmers STILL have to be nearby, with a weapon.
If the area have wolfs and bears.
Wolfs are attacking in packs, and all attempt have shown that lana and dinkey need help with a pack.
No wonder, non of them have sharp theet, more like a horse theeth.
No claes, but their great at kicking.
They arent able to fight of a heard of wolfs, it is animal abuse to put those animal in that kind of risk.
Big mooses, or elk , arent able to fight off a pack of wolfes. Not lama or donkey either.
But they are a great assets for warning, the farmer just have to keep an eye in it as well .
It isnt like some think to beluve, that one dont need anything else than a couple of lama's.
I know both lamas and donkeys, being killed by wolfs. And horses, and cowes, also.
    It isnt magic.
