  • This is how the Kia Level 2 Autonomous Driving strategy works.. and how and when it doesn't work!
I'm getting ready to do some more interesting autonomous driving things with this car, and decided to do a baseline video of my experiences with Kia's Lane Follow Assist. I assume this is irrelevant for most of you who already drive Kia's but I know there are folks in here who are just looking to research and learn about these cars. I love LFA and hate it all at the same time! Obviously this use case of "city driving" isn't where it really excels. It is way more reliable and predictable on the highway. But this environment has to be managed if actual autonomous driving is ever to be solved. Lately I have been super fascinated by where this technology is going... so since I can't work on the engine in the EV6, I figured I'd play with this stuff instead! :-)

Very interesting vid. My MK8 R has a lot of these “assist” systems. Your phrase that it is reactive, rather than proactive, definitely sums it up. Very hard to be relaxed letting the car do the driving, for sure.

Openpilot is available for the MQB platform…. I *almost* installed it in the R, but it wasn't quite a mature when I looked at it. It has improved a lot in the last year. My point is you should still pay attention to my testing results when I get it installed because it is an option for the R. :-)

Hey, I love your videos! I noticed you changed your wheel size to 19 inches. Did it improve ride comfort? I got the GT a month ago and love it, but the ride quality feels rough. I was thinking of switching to 19-inch wheels for better comfort. Did you notice a big improvement?

Yes. I much prefer the ride on 19s. Plus way for forgiving on rough roads and pot holes!
